Welcome new members and visitors to St Pius X Parish. We hope you feel welcome and will partici-pate in the many activities here wheth-er you are a regular parishioner, a sea-sonal resident or just visiting. For fami-lies with babies, two quieting rooms are available in the nave of the church, toward the back. Large windows allow mothers or fathers to continue to see and participate in Mass, as you sooth the baby by rocking. Childcare is lo-cated in the St. Paul Room and is available to babies and young children, at the 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., and 5:00 p.m. Sunday Masses. For children 4 to 6 years old, Children’s Church is avail-able at the 9:00 a.m. Mass. Children’s Church allows children to hear the Word of God in a way that their hearts can understand, so that they too can grow in their faith. Please ask a greeter for help in locat-

ing these areas, as well as restrooms,

water fountains, or other areas of inter-

est in our church. We are so glad you

have come!

What is the Bishop's Services Appeal (BSA)?

The BISHOP’S SERVICES APPEAL (BSA) has been Supporting the Works of Christ by serving others and ministering to those in need since 1973. The BSA is an annual appeal, accomplished as a result of the combined participation of our 121 church parishes and 28 missions. Located across eight civil parishes, the Diocese of Lafayette is able to make available vital programs, ministries and services through the generosity of donors.

Next weekend is BSA Commitment Sunday. Contributions by check must be made out to the Bishop’s Services Appeal, not St. Pius. As with all 2nd collections, please place your BSA envelop into the regular collection, or consider making your BSA con-tribution though the convenience of online giving. Visit diolaf.org to make a safe and secure online gift. Commitment cards will also be available in the Gathering Area of the church, the following weekend.

YOUR GIFT to the BSA enhances Diocesan efforts and provides essential funding to provide hope, dignity and compassionate care in the lives of others. YOUR GIFT will make a significant impact through the programs, ministries and services supported by the Bishop's Services Appeal. THANK YOU for prayerfully considering a gift or pledge to the Bishop's Services Appeal.

Ash Wednesday Schedule (Not a Holy Day of Obligation)

6:00a.m. Mass

12:05 noon Mass

12:05 noon Scripture Service

School Gymnasium (Briefer service with ashes/ No Mass)

5:30 p.m. Mass

Every person 14 years of age or older must abstain from meat (and items made with meat) on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all the Fridays of Lent.

Catholics ages 18 to 59 should fast on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday Fasting on these days means we can have only one full, meatless meal. Some food can be taken at the other regular meal times if necessary, but combined they should be less than a full meal. Liquids are allowed at any time, but no solid food should

be consumed between meals.

There are exemptions other than for age from the requirement to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

Those that are excused from fast and abstinence outside the age limits include the physically or mentally ill including individuals suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes. Also excluded are pregnant or nurs-ing women. In all cases, common sense should prevail, and ill persons should not further jeopardize their health by fasting.

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence.

Ash Wednesday Service in School Gymnasium Since Ash Wednesday is not a Holy Day of Obligation and attending Mass is not required, a Liturgy of the Word along with the distribution of Ashes will take place at 12:05PM in the school gymnasium. Deacon Phil Lizotte will lead this service with will include the Ash Wednesday readings, a homily, then the blessing and distribution of Ashes. This service will happen at the same time as Mass is taking place in church at 12:05PM. This shorter service will hopefully accommodate people who want to receive ashes during their lunch hour from work and will also take the pressure off so many people being at the 12:05PM Mass with quite a number not even being able to get into Church.

Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish On February 10, 1935, Immaculate Heart of Mary officially opened its

doors as the second church parish in the city of Lafayette established to serve the Black Catholic community. The parish was created by Bishop Jeanmard as a ministry base for four newly ordained African American priests who were members of the Divine Word missionary order: Frs. Anthony Bourges, SVD; Maurice Rousseve, SVD; Francis Wade, SVD; and Vincent Smith, SVD. Their success at this parish proved to be a turning point in the history of Black Catholic Priests in the United States.

Centennial Indulgence An indulgence granted by Pope Francis can be gained throughout this

Centennial Year by all who visit the Cathedral of St. John the Evange-list and pray the Centennial Prayer (with the usual conditions for an indulgence). Please see the Diocesan Webpage for more information. The Centennial Prayer is in the Cathedral or you may print it from the webpage (available in various languages on webpage).
