Ancient Mesopotamian Religion The ancient Mesopotamians believed in many gods. According to their religion, human life began during a battle between gods. There was only water, swirling for all eternity. From this water came Apsu and Tiamat, fresh water and salt water. They created all the other gods. However, the younger gods had a battle with the elder gods and defeated them.

Ancient Egyptian Religion The Ancient Egyptians based all religion and beliefs on multiple gods. They believed the world began with only Nun, water. From the water rose the first god, Atum. Atum then spat out Shu, the god of air, and Tefnut, the god of moisture. Shu and Nut had two children; Geb of the earth, and Nut of the sky. Nut and Geb had four children named Osiris, Isis, Seth, and Nephthys. Osiris ruled the earth with Isis. Osiris was a good king, but his brother, Seth, killed him in jealousy. Horus, Osiris’ son, killed Seth and became king. The Egyptians believed that their rulers were the decedents of Horus himself.

Ancient Greek Religion The Ancient Greeks also had their own thoughts on how the world began. The world began with Gaia and Uranus, the earth and the sky. Their children were Coeus, Crius, Cronus, Hyperion, Iapetus, Oceanus, Mnemosyne, Phoebe, Rhea, Theia, Themis, and Tethys. These were the 12 titans. Cronus killed his father and became the ruler of the titans. Cronus then married Rhea, his sister. Afraid that his own children would kill him, he ate all of his children. The last child, named Zeus, was hid away by Rhea so that he could live. When Zeus grew up, he killed his father and released his brothers and sisters. These gods were the ‘reason’ all things existed. When there was

thunder, that meant that Zeus was mad. If a man wanted a wife, he would pray to Aphrodite to help him with love. The god Ares would help them in war. This is what the Greeks believed in.

Chinese Religion In Ancient China, the largest forms of religion were Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism. Before the 20th century, almost everyone was taught into these ‘three teachings’, hoping to create a world were nothing bad existed.
