Ancient Egyptians

Pyramids• Pyramids were built for the

pharaohs and their queens. The pyramids were many different shapes and sizes. They varied from the old kingdom and the new kingdom.

• There are 80 pyramids that are known about to this day.

• The largest and the most preserved is the Giza pyramid, it was built at the beginning of the old kingdom. It was built for Khufu.

NILE RIVER• Length of the Nile is 6695km (4184

miles)• The Nile gets it name from a Greek

word “Nelios”, which means River Valley.

• They called the Nile a gift.• The Nile allowed the Egyptians to

raise many different animals and grow a lot of different types of food.• There were and are many different

types of fish in the Nile.• The Nile River was also the main way

to transport things.

Valley of the Kings • The Valley of the Kings is a

desert valley located on the west bank of Thebes, the political and religious capital of the New Kingdom.

• The valley has two main branches: the East Valley, where most of the royal tombs are situated and the West Valley, that only contains the tombs of Amenhotep III and Ay, and some pits. The tombs of most of the New Kingdom kings have been discovered over the years: some were already open to public during the Greek-Roman era, others have only recently been unearthed.

The Valley of the Queens is where the pharaohs wives were buried in ancient times .Also known as the Ta-Set-Neferu is where the children of the pharaohs were buried. The Valley of the Queens is on the west bank of the Nile across from the Thebes. The necropolis hold about 70 tombs, many are stylish and well decorated.

Where is Egypt???• The more than 3000 year long history of Ancient

Egypt has been divided into 8 or 9 periods, sometimes called Kingdoms.

• Egypt is an ancient country in Northern Africa, stretching from the South of the Mediterranean Sea.

• It is one of the oldest civilizations in the world, having developed along the Nile River, which flows northward through the center of the country, reaching the Mediterranean Sea. Egypt is located in northeast Africa.

Mummies• almost all Ancient Egyptians who could afford to become mummies would have this procedure completed when they passed away. It is estimated that there are about 70 million mummies in a 3,000 year period of ancient history.

• By the 4th century AD many Ancient Egyptians became Christians and no longer believed mummification was necessary after life and death for their ancient ancestors.

Tomb Art• The tomb was a place that was provided with objects that continued after existing death.• Some parts of the tomb might be decorated with scenes that come from the ancient history life. • It would also pursue the after life of being spiritually into the ancient Egyptians worldly life.

What are the Treasures of Ancient Egypt?

• Almost all of ancient Egypt's most important treasures are still hidden underground or are kept under security in the world's most famous museums.• It was not only jewelry and valuable metals that were prized possessions.

Sphinx

• The sphinx is built of soft sandstone and should have disappeared a long time ago but it was buried for a long time. The body is 200 feet in length and 65 feet tall.

• The face of the sphinx is 13 feet wide and its eyes are 6 feet high. Also known as the sacred cobra. the nose and the beard of the sphinx is missing.

Temples and Gods/Goddesses……

• Temples were the homes of the gods and goddesses.

• Every temple was made for a certain god or goddess and they were worshipped by the temple priests and the pharaohs of the kingdom.

• Many gods and goddesses took part in a lot of the creation, a few brought the flood each and every year, a few others offered protection, and some took care of people after they passed on.

• Some ancient Egyptians believed that it was important to worship the gods and goddesses so that they could enjoy life peacefully.

Fun information.....Clothing!

• Clothing was made from linen called flax.• Flax- it was a plant that had small leaves and blue

flowers.• They pulled flax out of the ground instead of cutting

it.• If the stems happened to be too ripe, they would use

it for mats and rope. • They used a loom, a loom is a frame made by four

pegs in the ground and had two beams.• Linen needed to be constantly washed, it was always

washed in the river, rinsed, and bleached in the sun. • They pressed the flax into the grooves on the

wooden board to let it dry.

Food!....Yummy…

• They ate many fruits and veggies and the tomato was the most popular.

• Pigs were forbidden to eat, they thought it was a dirty animal.

• Bread was one of the most popular foods.

• The Egyptians made wine out of grapes, pomegranates, and plums.
