ANCIENT Ancient means a long, long time ago.

It can also mean

very, very old!

HIEROGLYPHS The Egyptians used pictures of objects,

people, and animals to write down their language.

Why is it important to

us?

Because hieroglyphs are the first written

language…EVER!

SCRIBES

They were! Only very important people such as the royal

family, priests, and government workers knew how to write hieroglyphs.

Other people who were trained to read and write hieroglyphs were called scribes.

Scribes went to school for years just to learn how to read and write them!

Those hieroglyphs look really hard!!

HIERARCHY The important people

who could read and write hieroglyphs were at the top of the hierarchy in Ancient Egypt.

Hierarchy means how people are organized based on their power.

CARTOUCHE A cartouche is a design drawn

around the names of people at the top of the hierarchy in Ancient Egypt.

These cartouches were seen as symbols of eternity.

Drawing a cartouche arounda person’s name would make that person live forever and be protected forever.
