Introduction

There is a certain amount of variation among

individual teeth. Every tooth may not meet all

the criteria for identification. By

understanding the characteristics of each

tooth, you will be able to differentiate among

teeth, as well as between the left teeth and the

right teeth in any particular group.



Primary maxillary right central

incisor



•

10 months

• Greater mesiodistal dimension than crown

height

• Contact points – board, extending from the

incisal one third to the gingival one third



• Flat labial surface



• Prominent cingulum



• Root is conical

• Roughly two and half

times as long as the

crown height

• Mesial pulp horn is most

prominent



• Incisal edge is

- 2.3mm from the pulp horn on the mesialaspect

- 2.4 mm from the pulp horn on the distalaspect

- the pulp horns are approximately 1.2mmfrom the dentin enamel junction



Primary maxillary right lateral incisor



MAXILLARY LATERAL INCISOR

• Smaller than central

• Distal incisal aspect

is rounded• More conical

• Pulp chamber – smaller

2.6 mm from the incisaledge to the pulp



• Pulp is approximately 0.9 mm from the DEJ on

the mesial and distal aspects



Primary mandibular right central

incisor



• Flat when viewed from the buccal aspect

• Crown is one third

the length of the rootwith cingulum on the

lingual surface

• Root long and cylindrical



• Pulp is approximately

- 2.6 mm from incisal edge

- 1.7mm from distal enamel surface

- 1.0mm from the mesial surface



Primary mandibular right lateral

incisor



• Distal incisal angle is more rounded

• Pulp has similar dimensions but

is somewhat smaller



Primary maxillary right canine



MAXILLARY CANINE

• Long and sharp

• Crown constricted at the

cementinoenamel junction

• marginal ridges are usually lacking

• prominent cingulum



• long slender root is more then twice the crown

length

• Pulp horn 3.2 mm from the DEJ at the incisal edge

• On the mesial and distal

surfaces the pulp is

approximately 2.1mmfrom the DEJ



Primary mandibular right canine



MANDIBULAR CANINE

• Long and narrow tooth,

smaller then maxillary

canine

• Distal marginal ridge is

much

• point of contact is very

close to the cervical third



Primary maxillary right first molar



• Primary maxillary first molar is unique in that

it looks somewhat like a molar but also like apremolar

• Occlusal surface consists of three cusps

- mesiobuccal , distobuccal and on lingual

surface

• Square look

• Three slender roots begin in the

cementoenamel junction

• Prominent buccal cervical ridge



• Pulp horns correspond to each cusp

• From the cusp tip

- mesiobuccal pulp horn is 1.8mm

- distobuccal pulp horn is 2.3mm

- lingual pulp horn is 2.omm



Primary mandibular right first molar



• it has four cusps , two buccal and two lingual

• Occusal surface is unique- Mesiobuccal and mesiolingual cusps converge

together to form a rather narrow surface

- Very prominent ridge of enamel, thetransverse ridge, that divides the occusal

surface

- Enamel of the tooth is uniformly 1.2 mm thick



• Two board but thin mesiodistal roots, one on

the mesial aspect and one on the distal aspect

• Four pulp horns

- Buccal and lingual mesial pulp horns are

2.4mm away from the DEJ



Primary maxillary right second molar



• Resembles the permanent maxillary first

molar in appearance but is smaller• Four cusps , two on buccal and two on lingual

aspects

• Fifth cusp or prominence, the cusp of carabelli• Tooth is rhomboidal

• Prominent transverse or oblique ridge

connects the distolingual cusp with themesiolingual cusp



• Three roots that are curved to accommodate

the developing tooth bud beneath

• Enamel is usually 1-2mm thick uniformly on

the tooth

• Four to five pulp horns ,prominent beneatheach cusp tip

• Mesiobuccal pulp horn, as usual , is the largest

and closest to the DEJ



• Mesiobuccal pulp horn is usually 2.8mm from the

DEJ, while the distobuccal horn is 3.1 mm from the

DEJ

• Five cusps , three on the buccal surface and two on

the lingual surface• Enamel is uniformly 1.2mm thick

• Two roots which are narrow mesiodistally but very

board buccolingually• Five pulp horns corresponding to the five cusps tips

- mesiobuccal pulp horn is largest, extending

2.8mm from the DEJ

- distobuccal pulp horn is 3.1mm from

the DEJ
