Anatomy of a Hardcover Book

This guide is designed to help you understand the various parts of a hardcover book and how everything fits together.

The illustration at right includes a color coded schematic that shows the elements of a hardcover book and dust jacket.

If your project doesn’t have a dust jacket, simply ignore those elements; everything else will still be relevant.

To interpret the diagram, simply match the colored section from the diagram to the key below. Note that some sections are referenced in the “Dust Jacket” or “Casebound Book” column as well as the “Special Notes” column, so be sure to check both locations.

In order to read the diagram correctly, please note that each page is “dogeared” with a different color; this represents the back of that sheet. The dust jacket diagram also has two segments, shown in violet and light pink, folded down to represent the back of the section of that sheet.

Also note that the diagram ends with endsheets (www.printninja.com/endsheets) and then groups together the “inside pages,” or content of your book. The exact number of these inside pages will vary from project to project and the page count doesn’t have an affect on the diagram.
