The Secretary’s Address on the Occasion of Anambra Day 2014

It is with great joy and sense of purpose that I write you on this occasion of the celebra-tion of Anambra Day 2014. As you are aware, this day is to commemorate a past, an aspiration which we all desired and cherished in pursuit of our liberty. Like in all endeavor and undertaking of humanity, it is not easy and was not designed to be so. When I as-sumed the leadership of this association, I never pretended to be an expert. The sudden resignation of the past secretary created a vacuum that exposed the fragile nature of the association. It was obvious that we could end that days meeting without a leader, thus leaving the association directionless. I volunteered to serve with zeal and enthusiasm. I always believe that we as a people deserve better and should work to elevate the sta-tus of the association.

I assumed the leadership with a believe that brotherliness and peace is the most impor-tant recipe for the progress of the association. I worked to create an environment where brothers could disagree but should not hold bitterness against each other. However, it was only matter of time before I realized that the wound was deep. Like Achebe said “ef-fluvium diffused in to the air confuses even the fly”. Maybe I was confused as to what was the problem of the association. After thoughtful discussion with well meaning members’ and friends, I came to the conclusion that pride is our greatest enemy. We lack the inabil-ity to tell each other the truth. We cannot confront an issue with open mind, truth and not take sides. It is important that we come back to ourselves and renew our responsibilities to ourselves and our posterity.

We are in the process of reviewing our constitution, which is our binding document. My hope is that we approach it with a sense of duty to our selves and our children. I am aware that our youths are absent from our meetings. It is important that we realize the need to incorporate them into our community. We cannot pretend to be ignorant of the effect of individualism and the idea that they are “Americans” which we emphasis. The code word for this generation is networking. It is not a new theme. It did not start with computers. The boys and girls secondary schools in my town were built with a sense of community being greater than individuals. The entire Igboland was developed on the principle of cooperative. Every little group was important. The Igbo’s will say it is impor-tant to secure the land first. We should ask ourselves if we are fulfilling these dreams, if not what do we have to do?

While we celebrate, we should ask ourselves if we have done the best for the association. I want to thank every person here for honoring our invitations. You could have been somewhere else, or use to time as it pleases you but you choose to be here. We appreciate it. I want to thank all the members of the various committees, who worked so had to bring this day forth. I know what you went through to make it happen. I also thank the members of the executive for their effort to keep the associa-tion afloat. May God in his infinite mercy bless you all.

ThanksErnest Chukwujekwu Okani (Okwubanego).

Congratulations to My HubbyBig congratulations to my darling hubby, the UACA Treasurer,Chief Engr. V.C. Mozie, Oduah I of Nkpor. Darling, the kids and I are so proud of your accomplishments as UACA Treasurer. You are a man whose heart is the happiest when it beats for others. I appreciate your outstanding performance as you have proven your skeptics wrong, there by achieving the impossible. Your outstanding teamwork and foresightedness has made the product an instant success. You beat all odds to make this a huge success.

Dedication, enthusiasm, love/passion, and determination of a person like you can be com-mended through a message of this nature. You executed your job without fear or favor, which is required for an organization like ours to move forward. Irrespective of the odds then, you still volunteered for the position of the Treasurer of our great or-ganization when it appeared all was going down the hill; nonchalance/ apathy reigned supreme as no one cared a hoot about the prevailing situation. But you stepped in when others could not to save Umu-Anambra Cultural Association from going into a state of oblivion. For 18 months, Umu-Anambra Cultural Association had no Financial Secretary, but through your efforts, commitment, dedication cum love for our great organization, and through the support/assistance of another committed member, that vacuum was never left unfilled, you handled that position successfully. You doubled as a Treasurer and Financial Secretary so that our organization can move forward.

You strictly embraced those words of President J.F. Kennedy, “Think of what you can do for your country and not what your country can do for you.” But this time, it is thinking of what you can do for your organization and not what your organization can do for you. “Maka na – anyukoba mamili onu, ogboo ufufu.”

My sweet darling, your outspokenness, honesty/transpar-ency which are your watch words are unrivaled. You are indeed a maverick. You never care a hoot of whose ox is gored. You call a spade a spade.

My darling, the kids and I are saying kudos, thanks and God Blesses as you bless others. You work with discipline, diligence, fearlessness, persistence, abiding faith and love. By embracing these attributes, you have virtu-ally elevated the position of UACA Treasurer to a new level. To God we give the glory for all his goodness and love towards us. Nothing stops the man who desires to achieve. Every obstacle is simply a course to develop his achievement muscle. It’s a strengthening of his powers of accomplishment.

Anambra is a state in south-eastern Nigeria. Its name is an anglicized version of the original ‘Oma Mbala’, the native name of the Anambra River. The Capital and the Seat of Government is Awka. Onitsha and Nnewi are the biggest commercial and industrial cities, respectively. The state’s theme is “Light Of The Nation”. Boundaries are formed by Delta State to the west, Imo State and Rivers State to the south, Enugu State to the east and Kogi State to the north. The origin of the name is derived from the Anambra River (Omambala) which is a tributary of thefamous River Niger.

The indigenous ethnic group in Anambra state are the Igbo (98% of population) and a small population of Igala (2% of the population) who live in the North western part of the state.

Anambra is the eight most populated state in the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the second most densely populated state in Nigeria after Lagos State. The stretch of more than 45 km between Oba and Amorka contains a cluster of numerous thickly populated villages and small towns giving the area an estimated density of 1,500–2,000 persons living within every square kilometer of the area.

Resources:Anambra is rich in natural gas, crude oil, bauxite, ceramic and has an almost 100 percent arable soil. In 2006, foundation laying ceremony for the first Nigerian private refinery Orient Petroleum Refinery (OPR) was made at Nsugbe-Umuleri area. The Orient Petroleum Resource Ltd, (OPRL) owners of OPR, was licensed in June 2002, by the Federal Government to construct a private refinery with a 55,000 b/d capacity. Anambra State has the lowest poverty rate in Nigeria.

History:Anambra possesses a history that stretches back to the 9th century AD, as revealed by archaeological excavations at oraukwu and Ezira; Great works of art in iron, bronze, copper, and pottery works belonging to the ancient Kingdom of Nri, revealed a sophisticated divine Kingship administrative system which held sway in the area of Anambra from c. 948 AD to 1911.Old Anambra State was created in 1976 from part of East Central State, and its capital was Enugu. A further re-organisation in 1991 divided Anambra into two states, Anambra and Enugu. The capital of Anambra is Awka.

Culture and Tourism:Agulu Crocodile Lake is located along Awka road in Agulu, Aniocha Local Government Area of the state. A potential tourist site, it is home to an estimated three hundred crocodiles and water turtles. Fishing is not allowed on the lake and the crocodiles, being sacred animals to the people, cannot be killed. At noon the crocodiles and the turtles appear at the banks of the lake to take in sunlight.

Page 30: Anambra Day 2014 magazine

Culture and Tourism (continued):Ogbunike Caves, listed by UNESCO as a world Heritage Site is one of the most visited tourist sites in Anambra State. It is classified as a Sand-stone cave (Lateritic sandstones of Campanian-Miocene age). It has very scenic vegetation with attractive waterfall and is situated in the Ogba hillsOgbunike, across the Ugwu-Aga Escarpment Umunya by the Enugu/Onitsha Expressway.

Igbo Ukwu Museum: Igbo Ukwu is an ancient town known for astonishing metalcrafts and has remained an attraction to tourists because of its bronze artifacts. The bronzes which were first noticed in 1938 and later excavated by Thurstan Shaw (an English archaeologist) date back to about the 9th century, are of high value and historic relevance.

Uzu-Oka: Awka is historically known for the great metal foundry, Uzu Craftmanship. Imo-Awka is an annual festival celebrated by the natives.

Education:The literacy rate in Anambra state is one of the highest in the country. The state has a number of respected secondary and tertiary institutions, including: Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra State University with two campuses in Uli, and Igbariam; the Federal Polytech-nic, Oko; Nwafor Orizu University of Education, Nsugbe. Private Universities include The Tansian University, Umunya and Madonna University, Okija. Some of the more notable secondary schools include Dennis Memorial Grammar School (D.M.G.S) Onitsha; Bishop Crowther Seminary Awka; St Peter’s Special Science School Achina; Girls’ Secondary School Ozubulu; Christ the King Col-lege (C.K.C) Onitsha; Queen Of the Rosary College (Q.R.C.) Onitsha, Nnamdi Azikiwe Secondary School, Abagana; Igwebuike Grammar School Awka; Father Joseph Memorial High School Aguleri; Girls High School Umunya; Ajalli Government School; and many more. Primary and secondary school enrollment in the state is one of the highest in the country.
