The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

(Dir: Fincher, 2011)

The title sequence shows flashing images of several aspects including the institutions involved: Colombia Pictures, who produce films that are linked with the genre ‘action’. The flashing images immediately suggest high action and intense motions which proposes violence which foreshadows the genre of the film. This can be further backed up as we see someone being chained or gagged again suggesting violence. However, it could connote sexual imagery and gagging is used in the sexual way of BDSM.

The colours presented in the title sequence are mainly matte black which connotes death, darkness which are all conventions of a action film. The camera movement changes and is at fast pace, again suggesting the genre action. In the shot of the keyboard, we can see there will be a bit of technology involved within this film as well as the fact there are a lot of usb’s coming at a fast pace towards the liquefied person.

Sound

The sound presented within the opening titles goes perfectly with the images displayed. The drum beat is in time as it changes simultaneously to the next clip in the array of scenery. The song choice is up beat and contains a low bass which goes with the genre of the film as it builds tension and adrenaline. It also adapts with the gothic and morbid scenery well.

James bond: Quantum of Solace

(Dir: Forster, 2008)

James Bond is a well know franchise and establishing brand. The opening scene of this particular film is quite direct. It begins with an establishing shot and flashes into a tracking shot of a scene where you can view part of a car being driven. It does this for a while but shows different parts of the car as well as different parts of its driver such as his eyes and hand on the wheel, whilst the establishing shot zooms in at a fast past until we reach a destination in which we can see the car. The viewer is then instantly immersed in a typical James Bond car chase with guns being fired and cars revving their engines. We all known James Bond films contain violence, death and car chases making the genre of the film ‘action’.

Sound

The non-diegetic sound is in contrast with the scenery displayed as it is peaceful and subtle sounding. However, the sound quickly ascends its tempo and builds tension to coincide with the scenery. The song automatically comes to a halt and the gunshot and cars zooming past as well as beeping from innocent bystanders arise. The rest of the scene is purely diegetic sound this includes the revving and roaring of the car as well as the gun shots creates a sense of. The sound links with the genre of the film as most action films contain some sort of car chase and definitely gun shot and therefore automatically intrigues the audience as that is what the require and came to the cinema to watch.

Divergent

(Dir: Burger, 2014)

The beginning of the opening credits show the conglomerates involved within making the film, one being Summit Entertainment. This company has made films such as Twilight which is also aimed at young teenage girls as their target market. The beginning of the scenery shows a establishing shot showing a virtually empty area with no form of civilisation. However, the camera angle changes to do a 180 degree turn to show a wall with small gaps in between which covers a city which is again an establishing shot. The words Chicago is written across the screen however the area looks deserted and eerie as there are damaged buildings. The shot begins to zoom in and bring the audience to take a closer look further into the city with cuts in between showing different parts of the city. We are then brought into a wide shot which is slightly brought down as we then see pedestrians dressed in four different colours showing the divide as people with the same colour are with each other.

Sound

The non-diegetic sound within the title sequence is mellow and quite peaceful. At the beginning when the companies who produced the films logos are shown, there is a cube which moves which has sound effects. This makes the movements of the cube move real. The song used is instrumental and really highlights the peaceful setting shown on screen. The piano sounds were slow and makes the whole tone and mood complete.

Frozen

(Dir: Buck and Lee)

The opening 24 seconds of the title sequence just presents the title of the film: Frozen. However, a small snowflake is on focus at the beginning and is shown to be moving, whilst the camera moves outwards to present the audience with the title of the film which is present in ice blocks. The colour scheme was predominantly different shades of blue, which as we all know is the colour of water which can be frozen and therefore turned into ice. Later on, the lettering is faded and whilst the backdrop slowly changes colour and therefore presents us with the setting of the film.

Sound

The sound used, at first, is sort of like the beginning of a Christmas song you’d hear in church on Christmas day. However it diverts and turns quite like a tribal song however in the voice of a choir as the voices becoming lower.

Although no words were said, the whole thing is quite well done as it was in tune. The ending drifts off as the background fades to let the audience see the establishing shot of the place the film is set.
