ELECTROPOP DAVID BOWIE LIFE ON MARS? Mise-en-scene within this music video is very simplistic yet, as viewers, we can interpret it in many ways. David Bowie had already created a name for himself and upheld his unique reputation of alternativeness through this video. His costume, a turquoise "ice-blue" suit matched with a peculiar tie, alongside his flamboyant bright hair, blue contact lense in his right eye and blue makeup, all connote to the audience the artist’s style. It also relates to the lyrics such as “it’s the freakiest show” and “He's in the best selling show… Is there life on Mars?”. The video includes Bowie standing against a white backdrop which causes the audience to focus their attention solely on the artist. This star image wou- ld have caused Bowie’s fandom to grow, especially as this was only his fourth music video.

ELECTROPOPDAVID BOWIE LIFE ON MARS?

Mise-en-scene within this music video is very simplistic yet, as viewers, we can interpret it in many ways. David Bowie had already created a name for himself and upheld his unique reputation of alternativeness through this video. His costume, a turquoise "ice-blue" suit matched with a peculiar tie, alongside his flamboyant bright hair, blue contact lense in his right eye and blue makeup, all connote to the audience the artist’s style. It also relates to the lyrics such as “it’s the freakiest show” and “He's in the best selling show… Is there life on Mars?”.

The video includes Bowie standing against a white backdrop which causes the audience to focus theirattention solely on the artist. This star image wou-ld have caused Bowie’sfandom to grow, especiallyas this was only his fourthmusic video.

The cinematography and editing within this music video varies, including mid shots, extreme close ups, close ups, quick cuts, panning and fading.

Extreme close ups allow the audience to observe detail of the artist, including his heavy make up which is prominent due to a filter applied to the sequence which washes out pale colours from the videos. Mid shots reveal more of his outfit and appearance.

Thought through beat occurs at the end of the video, when the shots change through quick cuts to show extreme close ups of Bowie’s face. This differs from the rest of the shots which fade gradually into one another.

The camera pans quickly in one shot, and we are able to see Bowie singing “Take a look at the Lawman beating up the wrong guy” whilst pointing directly at the camera. This addresses the audience and engages them even more.

ScHoolboy Q - THat Part ft. Kanye West ScHoolboy Q - THat Part ft. Kanye West Both thought through beat and star image are included within this video. Both artists are featured regularly throughout the video, performing to the camera whilst in an empty house / walking through a house and outside. This is star image will increase their fan base and attract audiences attention to show their skill and style of music.

There are dancers throughout the video which adds to the performance aspect of the video and entertains the viewer.

There are many clips showing women through the male gaze. These shots capture them dancing provocatively and pole dancing, something that is typically used in a music video of this genre.

The whole of the video includes many different filters which will have been added during editing. These filters include lights or colours such as blue, green or red. The colours are matched with the mood of the song and lyrics, adding vibrance and innovation to the video.

The cinematography throughout the whole video is also very current. It uses different camera angles and shots to break up the sequence so that the audience do not get bored. This includes panning, hand held shots, continuous shots, fast and slow paced cut, various angled shots and distorted shots that I presume may have been shot with a fish eye lense or something of that sort.
