I am going to be selecting three music videos. These 3 videos in my opinion have similar conventions running

throughout. I have chosen to look at RnB/Pop. There are elements of both of those genres in the 3 Songs that I have selected. I am going to be creating a collage and

then annotating it.

Mariah Carey – W

e Belong Together

How many locations are used: There are approximately four locations. Establishing shots, flashbacks, outdoor wedding scenes, and personal model up close home scene. How many costume/Props: There are quite a few costumer changes for Mariah, she

wears a seductive night outfit, she wears a blouse, she wears a silky dressing gown and her wedding dress. The men that are involved in the scene all wear suits except for the vicar who wears his attire. Variety of Shot Types: There are establishing shots, mid shots, close ups, extreme close ups, high angle shots, low angle shots, long shots. Performance/Narrative: This approach in the genre is more narrative and has a storyline. The main character is unhappy with who she wishes to marry someone else and

ends up running off with them in the end. The narrative is very obvious and was well shot.

Beyoncé – Listen

How many locations are used: There are approximately about 4 different locations which range from indoor studios to in a theatre room stage to outside club scenes. How many costumer/props: There is a major part in the middle where the main character wears the

same outfit on the stage. However during her model studio shots she is wearing elegant and fancy clothing. The man that is seen is wearing smart wear, a shirt and waistcoat. Variety of Shot Types: There are lots of shots, long shots, close up shots, mid shots,

establishing shots, high angle shots and low angle shots. Performance/Narrative: This was a performance style, a narrative may have been used but it wasn’t a very obvious one.

Alicia Keys – Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart How many locations: There are mainly only two locations. One is inside where she is resting like a model on a luxurious silk

material. The other one is outside. She sort of travels from one side to another and that is what is filmed. How many costumes/props: The main character wears two costumes. One is basic vest top and jeans, and then she later wears a jacket with sunglasses. After that she then wears a dress. Variety of Shots: There are animated shots, mid shots, close ups and long

shots. Performance/Narrative: Although it isn’t as obvious there is still a storyline of trying to use her powers to help save her heart and saving others running through the video.

Doing this analysis task has made me aware of what is included in this genre when it comes to things such as how many costume changes or location

change etc. It’s made me think about how I could restrict mine and make it similar to these other genres. I have benefited from doing this activity.
