Magazine OneNME Dizzie Rascal 2008

Page 3: Analysing articles

ANALYSIS OF ARTICLES- DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD 1NME – Dizzie Rascal

The main image shows Dizzee Rascal doing graffiti on a wall which suggests he has a rebellious side. His facial expression gives the impression that he is looking around to see if anyone is looking as he knows he is doing something wrong but wants to carry one whatever. Similarly it gives a signal to his background and the way he used to be. Also the clothes he is wearing show that he is a young, rap artist but his clothes do not distract the reader away from the article itself.

The subheading entices the reader to read all the article as it makes the article seem exciting and interesting as readers will want to know why 2009 has been Dizzee’s year and what his amazing story is. Also Dizzee Rascal is in bold so for people who don’t know who he is and they will easily be draw to that sentence as it stands out. The subheading needs to be short, intriguing and gets to the point so the reader will want to find out more.

The article is set out in four columns which gives it a less cluttered feel. Also the text wraps around the radio so the text is easier to read and also lets the reader

notice all the props that add to the mise – en – scene.

Page 4: Analysing articles

The main heading is a pun on the saying ‘from rags to riches’ which gives the impression that in the articles Dizzee will be talking about his home life and his background to his life now. Also the word ‘tags’ also links back to the background of the graffiti and entices the reader to see what Dizzee Rascal is like.

The by-line shows the photographer and the journalist which may interest some readers if they would like to see their other work.

Second image used is not meant to distract the reader but just add to the mise – en scene. The use of beer bottles and the radio show that Dizzee may be breaking a few laws but he doesn’t mind as he is young, cheeky and he isn't changing his behaviour. Also the background is faded out so the article can be read.

The start of the text begins with a capital ‘Y’ which grabs the readers attention and shows the where article starts.

The caption at the top of the page says Dizzee so readers who are flicking through the magazine will easily find that page as he was also the main feature on the cover

The page number is useful as it easy for the reader to find articles from the contents page. Also the date is again used to highlight what issue this NME is and finally the logo of NME is used to make the reader remember what magazine it is and helps the reader also think of the exclusive articles with NME.

Analysis of written article

The article itself is basically about Dizzee Rascals life and how it is changed however it also shows that Dizzee is still grounded and how he always remembers how lucky he is. The article is written in quite a colloquial form as it doesn’t use a question and answer format. It portrays Dizzee as a urban artist and links in with the main image and it talks about Dizzee wanting to graffiti at the end of the interview. It is written in 4 short columns each of approximately 75-100 words so the feel is very uncluttered. The main heading/headline is quite dramatic as it needs to grab the readers attention and the headings and headlines aim is to make the reader read all the article.

Magazine TwoNME – Florence Welsh 2009

Page 7: Analysing articles

ANALYSIS OF ARTICLES- DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD 2NME 2009

The main image shows the lead singer of Florence and the Machine. The long shot of her is taking up all of the left hand side of the double page article. The colours she is dressed in aren’t meant to distract the reader away from the article however it still grabs the readers attention as Florence’s hair stands out on the grey background along with what appears to be the American flag she is leaning on. Also the pose she is doing shows she is strong, independent and self-assure. Furthermore the picture links in with the caption ‘so why is Florence Welsh lying on the floor attacking herself?’. Similarly the eye contact Florence is giving to the audience makes it seem very personal as if she is telling the audience a secret about why she is ‘attacking herself’

The background is relatively plan and doesn’t distract the reader away from the many image and the article. Also the text of the ‘USA’ is in capitals which suggests that it is important to the article however the USA is not completely bold which may give the impression that the main focus of the article is Florence Welsh. Furthermore the phrase ‘got the love’ is written in a almost feminine way as it is flowing across the page. As the phrase is the only text that is black and bold suggests again its importance. The phrase ‘got the love’ is taken from one of Florence’s song which familiarises this article with Florence Welsh’s fans.

The sub heading is there to entice the reader to want to read the rest of the article. Also by using the rhetorical question ‘so why is Florence Welsh lying on the floor attacking herself’ interests the reader as if she was ‘2009’s biggest success story’ she shouldn’t be attacking herself. Also it shows that NME gets all the exclusives and the reader will feel privileged as it seems Florence is sharing something personal to the reader.

ANALYSIS OF ARTICLES- DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD 2NME 2009

The caption at the top of the page says Florence so readers who are flicking through the magazine will easily find that page as she was also the main feature on the cover

The start of the text begins with a capital ‘D’ which grabs the readers attention and shows the where article starts. Also the font is written in the same flowing style as the head line ‘got the love’ which shows they are linked. The by-line shows

the photographer and the journalist which may interest some readers if they would like to see their other work.

The article is set out in three different sized columns which isn't very cluttered so it suggests that the main focus for this image is the image as that is taking up more of the page than the text. The text is in black which lets it stand out against the white background.

Analysis of written article 2NME Florence Welsh Article

The article itself it about Florence Welsh and how 2009 was her year. The start of the article talks about Florence performing on an American chat show so therefore links with the fact America is ‘at her feet. Also, like most NME articles the style of the interview is not structured and it gives the impression that the interviewee is almost following Florence around. Furthermore the interview praises Florence’s talent which may make the reader want to buy her album however it also shows that Florence is still very down to earth. The article, on this page, is in three columns ranging from 50 to 150 words so the feel of the double page spread is very uncluttered and professional. The subheading needs to make all the NME readers read this article so it tends to say something that will grab their attention for example ‘so why is Florence Welsh lying on her floor attacking herself?’

Magazine three – Smash Hits Beyonce 2006

Page 11: Analysing articles

Analysis of double page spread 3

The main image shows who the article is about so in this case it’s Beyonce. The picture is a medium short and takes up the whole of one page. The pose she is doing gives the impression that she is a ‘shy girl’ as she is almost hiding behind her hand. Also it is not a ‘sexual’ pose and it is suitable for that target audience. Furthermore. as she is looking at the audience it gives it more of an personal feel and it grabs the readers attention. The background in which she is standing behind makes her clothes and jewellery which suggests the main focus is of Beyonce.

Smash Hits is a magazine mainly for young teenagers and the genre is pop and music in the charts. The reader will be able to notice this from the choice of artist and the colours used.

The subheading/ tag line is positioned underneath the pull quote and again the aim is to attract the reader to want to read more. It is written in a different colour and a much smaller font that than the pull quote however the fact it is still bigger than the article font makes it stand out. The tagline suggests that Beyonce is going to share all the details about her personal life with you and smash hits is the only place to find it as it states ‘ Beyonce talks Jay – Z, slobbing out and what the future hold...’. Also the fact that this magazine is for young teenagers, the article and the tag line is meant to relate Beyonce with them and for Beyonce to become a role model figure.

Page 12: Analysing articles

The pull quote is positioned at the top of the page and the quote ‘I’m a shy girl but on stage I go wild’ is meant to entice and grab the readers attention so will read the rest of the article. Also on this article there is no main heading introducing Beyonce so therefore it suggests again that the genre is pop as the reader is automatically meant to know who the women is and also the pull quote is meant to be enough. Furthermore the fact that the pull quote is in red links in with the fact that when Beyonce is on stage she is ‘wild’ and also it makes the phrase stand out against the white background.

The article is an question and answer interview style unlike the NME articles. It is presented in two different colours (one for the question another for the answer) which go with the colour scheme but also it makes the article visually appealing and easy to understand for their young target audience. Also the article feel is quite cluttered which again is useful for the young teenage audience. The use of quiz in the interview gives the article a fun, young and energetic feel so the reader does not get bored. Furthermore there is a bold box at the end of the interview with the headline ‘win’ so therefore it will grab the readers attention.

The magazine title is in the top left corner, although it is not dominating it stands out as it used a different colour from the rest of the article. The use of ‘smash hits’ being in the corner makes the reader link this exclusive interview with Beyonce with ‘smash hits magazine’.

The flasher of Beyonce with her boyfriend Jay – Z again gives the interview a personal feel and helps the reader relate to Beyonce.

Page 13: Analysing articles

Analysis of written article

The overall feel of the article seems like a friendly chat between the interviewer and the interviewee. The question and answer style is highlighted by using different colours which is particularly useful for the target audience of smash hits (young teenagers) as its visually appealing and will grab their attention. Also the article gives the impression that Beyonce is telling personal information just to you. The subheading is an almost introduction and goes through all the topics Beyonce is going to talk about. The article approximately is less than 250 words and the feel is very cluttered which is important for Smash Hits’ target audience as young teenagers have a short attention span.
