ANALYSINGDIGI-PACKS

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A DIGIPACK?• A digi-pack is designed to promote a bands new album.

• Often including a poster, artwork and cover it gives buyers and insight into what their style of music is.

• Albums always come with a lyrics booklet and some form of artwork with them.

• Deluxe editions of albums are usually made available with the enticing feature of having extra promotional items, such as posters, unheard songs and exclusive artwork.

GALAKTIKON

Brendon Small’s Galaktikon album is a concept solo project that is a step away from his usual heavier brand of music. The album is a sci-fi themed album that has a story much like a graphic novel woven into the songs. Set in a fictional universe the album tells the story of the hero Triton who must overcome his nemesis Beast blade who has kidnapped his ex-wife.

Those who know Smalls work will be attracted to the comedic and over the top style but also for the music that may be silly in nature but in fact is extremely well written and good hard rock songs.

Hand drawn album cover, featuring monsters, spaceships and futuristic looking characters. Heavily indicates the sci-fi nature of the album.

All the images are references to aspects of the song, e.g. the central figure is the hero Triton. This puts a heavy emphasis on the story/graphic novel aspect of the album.

The name of the artist and album are in large embellished letters in a similar style to the rest of the albums artwork. The name reflects the theme and would encourage potential buyers to at least look at the album.

The look of the album defines it as the hard rock genre, which it is but those who know the genre well would identify it with artists such as Steve Vai and Joe Satriani which would encourage the target audience to buy the album

LATERALUS

Tool are a band that are renowned for their heavy use and reliance on imagery in the meanings of their music, their albums and even in their live shows. In fact the style tool uses is so famous in the underground scene that the bands name is not even displayed on the front cover. The artistic style is very intriguing and those fond of alternative music would be instantly attracted by the colourful pallet of the image and the bizarre image choice e.g. the skinless man surrounded by a ring of fire and staring eyes. Tools methods of attracting their audiences is certainly odd but has gained them a huge following.

Incredibly artistic and psychedelic style of imagery. However this is contrasted by the more disturbing content which defines it as a harder genre of music.

The dark combination of images is based on the titular song Lateralus and ties in with the music video, an example of cross media convergence within a single product. The album attempts to convey the

emotion and feeling of the songs through the use of artwork using a strong sense of enigma and breaking the 4th wall

THE RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS

The RHCP’s first album, embodies their original and unusual style of music and the artwork captures the essence of the music perfectly. The psychedelic, scrappy and graffiti style look matches perfectly to the scrappy and unusual blend of hard rock, funk and blues that the chili peppers created. Anyone who enjoys alternative and wacky music would be instantly drawn to artwork like this, if for no other reason than it is bizarrely intriguing. The theme of street art would also engage people who were more into pop and rap scenes.

Graffiti style imagery, embodies the insane and psychedelic style of the Chili peppers.

The art does not follow any particular style and is reminiscent of several genres. This means it has the potential to attract many different audiences.

The album signals to any potential buyers that it is an unusual brand of music that is unlikely to have been matched before. This would interest people who look out for cutting edge music.
