Analyse the ways Spielberg uses the camera to create meaning in the film

This is a tracking shot. This is an important shot because in the background we see empty lifeguard stations, which creates fear in people. We probably wouldn’t even notice them but Spielberg did this for effect. Also we can see Brodie is the only one on the beach that isn't happy, this shot was also used to highlight this area as if we are to expect something is going to happen.

This is a long shot, Spielberg used this to create isolation and calmness. It is significant because at this time it seems calm but later on we see a difference and a massive contrvercy.

Establishing shots are used to set the scene and show who/what type of scene it is going to be. In this establishing shot we see that there are many people on a beach having fun.

We see 2 different shots in these pictures. A mid shot and Close up. The mid shot in this picture shows Brodie leaning back on a chair looking a little bit nervous although he’s relaxed on the chair, this is to show that he’s not fully relaxed. Then we have the close up which shows that he Is staring at something, we also see a little bit of fear on his face, which gets the viewers thinking and maybe scared.

The shot on the left here is a point of view shot and the shot on the right is an over the shoulder shot. The point of view shot shows the mans face to the right but dilibratlty shows a girl in the sea looking venerable Spielberg shows this to bring fear to people. And the over the shoulder shot is used to show what the person listening is thinking. For example in this shot it shows that Brodie isn’t interested in listening but only wants to watch the sea, suggesting that a bad thing will happen.

This shot is a wide/long shot and it is used to show the children playing in the sea, making noise and vibrations. Most people know that sharks are attracted to this as well this just adds to the tension. Spielberg used this shot to add anxiety for the viewers and show what Brodie was staring at.

Contra zoom is used to unsettle viewers, it shows the anxiety, fear and nervousness on Brodies face, the camera looks like its zooming in but in fact its moving away. Spielberg uses this shot to show that Brodie has seen something and we immediately know that something bad has happened because of his face.
