TITLE CELL ANALOGY
DATE / DAY 12 APRIL 2011
CELL IS LIKE A CHOCOLATE FACTORY
1. Nucleus is the central office
Manage all the activities, initiates production and control activities of the
factory
Nucleus coordinate the cell’s activities
It also stores genetic information of the cell
2. Nucleolus is the factory employers
The employer’s place is inside the central office
Nucleolus is a dense region in the nucleus where subunits of ribosomes are
assembled from protein and RNA
3. Plasma membrane is the front door
Allow for things to enter and leave the factory
Is the boundary that separates the living cell from its nonliving surrounding
In cell, plasma membrane is the organelle which control of substances moving
into and out of the cell
4. Cell wall is the fence around the factory
The fence is built for safety purpose. It can prevent the avoiders from
entering the cell
The cell wall in the cell will give protection and structural support of the cell
5. Cytoplasm is the workers
Workers is the people works in the Chocolate’s Factory
Cytoplasm is inside the cell which the site for all metabolism of the cell occur
6. Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) is the stairs
Workers moving through the stairs
The Rough ER is important in the synthesis of protein
The Smooth ER is important in the synthesis of lipids, metabolism of
carbohydrates and detoxification of drugs and poison
1
7. Ribosome is the manager
He/she decide what characteristics the factory need and instruct the workers
what they should be doing
In cell, ribosomes are produced in the nucleolus
It will produce protein by assembling amino acids according to instruction
from RNA
It will control the sequence of amino acid residues in the protein formed
Ribosome in cell is the site of protein synthesis
8. Mitochondria is the generator of the factory
The generator produce energy for the machines in the factory
In cell, mitochondria is the sites for cellular respiration
It will form produce energy in the form of ATP
9. Vacuole is the store of the factory
The storage rooms store the all ingredients of the chocolate and give it to the
workers when needed
The vacuole in cell functions to store food substances like sugars, amino acids
and mineral ions
It also produce turgor pressure against cell wall for support
10. Chloroplast is the canteen
Canteen is the site of food production for people in the factory
Chloroplast in the cell is the site of photosynthesis
The chlorophyll in the chloroplast function to trap sunlight energy and carry
out production of ATP and NADPH
11. Golgi body is the shipping area
The shipping area will pack products for distribution
Golgi body receives vesicles from endoplasmic reticulum(ER), stores,
modifies the proteins and finish the polypeptides and lipids
It will carry the packages finished products in vesicles to the plasma
membrane or to lysosomes
2
12. Secretory vesicles is the cleaners
It is the vesicles budding from Golgi Apparatus
Secretory vesicles transport finished product to the plasma membrane
The product then released by exocytosis
13. Lysosome is like the recycle bins
The recycle bins will break down and recycle used part
In cell, lysosome is the vesicle that buds from the Golgi Apparatus
It is involved in intracellular digestion
14. Peroxisome is the machine
Peroxisome is the sac of enzyme
It breaks down fatty acid and amino acid
15. Centriole is the trucks
Move the factory when it needs to relocate
In cell, centriole act as organizer of the spindle fibres and are involved in the
separation of the chromosomes or chromatids during cell division
It also organize the formation of cilia and flagella to help in movement of the
cell organelles
16. Cytoskeleton is the bricks and steel
Construction materials that keep the factory from collapse
In cell, cytoskeleton has three components :microtubules, microfilaments and
intermediate filaments
Cytoskeleton gives mechanical support, maintains the shape of a cell aids cell
motility
