Things to do on route
Painswick Rococo GardensStocks, fine church & churchyard in PainswickMiserden Park Gardens
Painswick CircularThis historic wool town of Painswick, known as ‘The Queen of the Cotswolds’, and is one of the finest and best-preserved Cotswolds settlements. It is at the mid-point of the Cotswolds Way and surrounded by marvellous walking country. The Rococo Gardens, Painswick Beacon and the picturesque villages of Sheepscombe, Edge and Slad are all within a mile or so of the centre. New Street contains the oldest building in England which used to house a Post Office, the country’s oldest bowling green and one of the most memorable churchyards in the country – with 99 yew trees. This small town has become well-known for its award-winning hotels and inns, specialist craft and antique shops and its summer Arts Festival.
The route continues through the rural Cotswold countryside passing villages such as Miserden, The Duntisbournes, Daglingworth and Sapperton.
Miserden has a 17th century Manor House overlooking the Golden Valley of the River Frome and is at the heart of a thriving estate and village community.
The Duntisbournes are a string of attractive villages along the valley of the tiny Dunt Stream and off the beaten track. Inside Daglingworth church you will find a group of late Saxon carvings adorning the church walls and at Lower End there is a circular medieval dovecote.
The route continues to Sapperton famous for the Sapperton Canal tunnel and its connection with the Cotswolds Arts and Crafts Movement.
Bisley is full of character with rows of Cotswold Stone cottages and the five wells are annually blessed and decked with flowers on Ascension Day.
The route continues back to Painswick but if you have time divert to the famous village of Slad known through Laurie Lee’s novel ‘Cider with Rosie’ and have a rest of the Woolpack Inn.
