ANAEROBIC DIGESTION OF WASTE BIOMASS TO PRODUCE
BIO - CNG
ELECTRICITY BY MEANS OF BIOGAS GENSET
FUEL FOR STEAM BOILER
Anaerobic Digestion is a process where waste biomass is converted into useful
products like Biogas and Organic Fertilizer by the action of micro-organisms in the
absence of air. Biogas is typically a mixture of Methane, CO2 and traces of contaminant
gases like H2S. The digestate leftover, after drying is used as an organic fertilizer. The
biogas can be used to fire a boiler to produce steam, run a biogas genset to produce
electricity or be converted into BioCNG for further energy use.

We suggest a continuous anaerobic digestion system with multiple digester vessels
using a Thermophilic process at 50 to 60 ºC (elevated temperature accelerates the
digestion process and hence production of methane gas). The biogas produced can be
used to fire a boiler for producing steam. Contaminant gases like H2S are removed
from the biogas to run a genset to produce electricity. Hot flue gases from the above
two processes are used to heat the digester vessel. Alternatively, CO2 is removed from
the biogas and it is compressed to produce BioCNG. Recycling of water ensures that
limited amount of fresh water is used for slurry-making.
Various types of waste biomass that can be used are Food processing industry waste like potato & other vegetable / fruit peels
Agricultural waste & residues, off spec. / rotten fruits & vegetables
Food waste from hotels, restaurants & supermarkets.
Project Metrics
One metric ton of biomass can be used to generate around 80 M³ / day of biogas.
15 metric tons of biomass consumption per day can generate around 1200 M³ of
biogas per day.
1200 M³ of biogas can be used to run a 100 kW genset for 20 hours per day
besides providing heating for digester vessel.
Electrical power generated is around 2000 kWh (units) and equivalent saving in
grid power is Rs. 7.0 X 2000 units = Rs. 14,000 per day or Rs. 50.0 Lacs per year.
Diesel consumption for a 100 kW (125 KVA) genset is around 20 liters per hour (at
75 % load) hence equivalent saving is 20 X 20 X Rs. 58.4 = Rs. 23,360 per day or
Rs. 85.0 Lacs per year.
Annual maintenance cost as well as pollution from a biogas genset is much lower
as compared to a diesel genset.
1200 M³ of biogas can be converted to around 480 kg of CNG and equivalent
saving is Rs. 38.15 X 480 = Rs. 18,300 per day or Rs. 67.0 Lacs per year

Waste biomass to generation of Electrical Power / BioCNG / Steam makes sound
economic & business sense even without government subsidies as well furthers the
‘green’ credentials of the business – waste to energy, renewable energy, reducing
carbon footprint, reducing landfill, reducing cost of disposal of waste from food
processing units and agricultural waste etc. The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy
provides subsidy on per kW basis of the system cost under Biogas Power (Off-grid)
programme.
Conversion of Biogas to BioCNG
We are a leading Project & Technical Consultancy organization in the field of Recycling
(e.g. waste tyres & PET bottles, waste biomass to energy), thermoplastics, rubber and
composites. We can provide complete assistance for planning & implementation of
Waste Biomass to Energy plant. We can prepare a Techno Economic Project Feasibility
Report as well as Detail Project Report for your decision making, bank finance and govt.
statutory clearances.

Once you decide to go for the project we can assist you in all activities related to the
implementation of the project i.e. sourcing of plant & machinery, plant layout &
architectural drawing, sourcing of utilities & support equipment, installation &
commissioning of the plant, trial production, quality control aspects, tie-up with biomass
waste producers, tie-up with power / steam / BioCNG consumers.
We look forward to hearing from you.
