‘Many of the current digital typefaces

are nothing more than very weak

derivations of faces that were

beautiful in hot metal and photo-

typesetting. They are poorly

digitized by technicians without

feeling for type, with only financial

interests.

I would rather read a page in a

face that is deliberately bad than

text in poorly digitized Bembos,

Helveticas, Times and even Frutiger.

It makes me very sad to see digital

type so far from the original designs.

Today’s type hype will even grow

bigger. Now that every office printer

can print many different types,

people are forced to choose, and

become more aware of type.’

Luc(as) de Groot

L uc(as) de Groot, born in the

Netherlands in , studied

type design and typography at

the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The

Hague under Gerrit Noordzij.

He then spent four years with the

Dutch design group BRS Premsela,

working mainly on corporate identities.

A period of freelancing and

teaching at the Art Academy in Den

Bosch followed before Luc(as) moved

to Berlin in to work with

MetaDesign for four years. In he

founded FontFabrik in Berlin.

Devoted to type day and night,

Luc(as) admits to occasionally finding

time for sleep between working,

reading, writing and drawing.

The fonts in the LucasFonts

collection, an eclectic mix of serif,

sans-serif and display, offer perfect

solutions for typographic branding in

graphic design, advertising and

publishing.

ThesisLucasFonts shown on the following pages are either the original components of Luc(as) de Groot’s Thesis project or derivations. Completed in the original Thesis comprised distinct letterforms – TheSans,TheSerif and TheMix, each in weights, Extra Light to Black, and each weight in variants, Plain, Italic, Small Caps, Small Caps Italic, Expert and Expert Italic. In all, that is a total of different fonts. New additions include Basic versions of each Thesis component; a Condensed version of TheSans; Office, Mono and Typewriter versions; and a traditional serif version TheAntiqua.
