AN ARTISTS’ PORTFOLIO 6 FROM “FORE” BLOUINARTINFO.COM NOVEMBER 2012 MODERN PAINTERS 79 The editors of Modern Painters asked six young artists to give us a sneak peek of their latest work, which is presented on the following pages. l All of these artists are participating in “Fore,” which opens November 8 at the Studio Museum in Harlem. The exhibition is the fourth installment in the museum’s ongoing “F” series, which focuses on emerging African-American artists and launched in 2001 with “Freestyle.” Curated by Naima J. Keith, Thomas J. Lax, and Lauren Haynes, “Fore” includes the work of 29 artists, much of it specifically produced for the exhibition. The curatorial trio brought a mix of interests to the selection process: Keith, formerly on staff at the Hammer Museum, gravitates toward the L.A. art scene; Haynes concentrates on painting and photography; and Lax’s specialty is performance. The latter medium will be especially well represented in “Fore” (a first for the “F” series) with mini-festivals of performance work from the likes of Jacolby Satterwhite, Narcissister, and Kevin Beasley scheduled for two November weekends. l For each of the participating artists, the location of the Studio Museum in Harlem is pivotal. The curators worked closely with these young talents to develop the work included in “Fore,” paying particular attention to the institution’s setting and context. “I think we always organize our exhibitions here site-specifically, given the idio- syncrasies of our space and also the very special place that is 125th Street, with all its aesthetic and cultural ramifications,” says Lax. “It’s a wild place to make contemporary art.” Visit BLOUINARTINFO.com for an extended Q&A with the show’s three curators. “Fore” is on view through March 10, 2013.

The editors of Modern Painters asked

six young artists to give us a sneak peek of their latest work, which is presented

on the following pages. l All of these artists are participating in “Fore,” which opens November 8 at the

Studio Museum in Harlem. The exhibition is the fourth installment in the museum’s ongoing “F” series, which focuses

on emerging African-American artists and launched in 2001 with “Freestyle.” Curated by Naima J. Keith, Thomas J. Lax, and Lauren

Haynes, “Fore” includes the work of 29 artists, much of it specifically produced for the exhibition. The curatorial trio brought a mix of

interests to the selection process: Keith, formerly on staff at the Hammer Museum, gravitates toward the L.A. art scene; Haynes concentrates on painting and photography; and Lax’s specialty is performance. “I think we always organize our exhibitions here site-specifically, given the idio-

syncrasies of our space and also the very special place that is 125th Street, with all its aesthetic and cultural ramifications,”

says Lax. “It’s a wild place to make contemporary art.”

Visit BLOUINARTINFO.com for an extended Q&A with the show’s three curators. “Fore” is on

view through March 10, 2013.
