PRE-CONFERENCE GUIDEWith only a few weeks left until AMUNC 2011 kicks off in the nation’s capital, we have put together this guide to help get you to Canberra. You will find useful information about transport, post-conference trips and preparing for committee sessions, as well as a sneak peek at what to expect at the exciting socials and other events lined up for the week.

We ask that you keep this guide in electronic form where possible, to contribute towards our commitment to a sustainable conference.

CanberraThe main road running through Canberra is Northbourne Avenue, which links with the Federal Highway; the link to reach Sydney (or destinations further north) or Queanbeyan and other locations south of Canberra. The city centre of Canberra is located in Civic, where you can find easy access to the Australian National University, the High Court of Australia, and public transport.

Air

Canberra airport is serviced by four airlines, where flights operate daily from all capital cities of Australia, and some regional cities. Canberra Airport is just 8 kilometres and about 10 minutes from the city centre by taxi or shuttle bus (Airliner).

The Airliner is operated by Deane’s Buslines, and costs AUD$9 one way or AUD$15 return. This service will drop all passengers off at East Row, which is parallel to North-bourne Avenue in Civic.

Coach

Many visitors choose the option of taking a coach to Canberra, especially from Sydney or Melbourne, for the flexibility and frequency of services. All coaches arrive at the Jolimont Centre (65-7 Northbourne Ave), located in the city centre. The departure point for coaches in each city can be easily reached from their respective airport (see links below).

For those taking the coach option, we recommend that you purchase a flexi-ticket, to accommodate a post-conference trip (see page 6). For all other tickets, companies will charge a fee to change the date (around AUD$20).

Car

Canberra can be reached from as little as a comfortable 3 hour drive. See below for estimated driving times from some of the closest major Australian cities.

3The Australian National University (ANU)The ANU encompasses the advantages of being located in the centre of Australia’s capital city yet offering a leafy campus with excellent sports and academic facilities. The ANU is located in Acton on the north side of Lake Burley Griffin, just west of the Civic Centre.

Foot

ANU is an easy 10 minutes walk from Canberra CBD (Civic), heading west. You can reach the campus via University Avenue, Marcus Clarke St, Childers St, or Barry Drive.

Bicycle

An environmentally-friendly campus, there are many places in which bikes can be secured. Many of the roads around Canberra also feature bike lanes, while buses also feature an easy-to-use bike rack, located at the front of the bus.

Bus

Canberra is serviced by government-operated Action buses, which depart from the City Bus Station. This is located in Civic (Canberra city centre), on Mort St, East Row, and Alinga St. Route 3 (departs City Bus Station Platform 4) runs through ANU, while other routes pass ANU.

You can pay your fare onboard, or purchase a MyWay card. A single bus trip will cost $4 or $2 (if you have a NSW/ACT student concession card), paid once you board the service. A daily ticket costs $7.60 or $3.80 (NSW/ACT student concession card).

If you use a MyWay card you must remember to tag on and off, otherwise your card will be charged the full fare. More information, including where to purchase MyWay smart-cards, can be found at http://www.transport.act.gov.au/myway.

Check http://www.action.act.gov.au for route timetables, maps, and information on any possible service disruptions.

Deane’s Buslines provides a service from the city centre to Queanbeyan. See http://www.deanesbuslines.com.au for further information on fares, route maps and timetables.

Taxi

You can hail a taxi on the street or at a taxi rank. You will find these located on Northbourne Ave outside the Jolimont Centre, and at the corner of Mort and Bunda St.

Car

You can reach the campus from Barry Drive and North Road, Marcus Clarke St, Childers St, or Parkes Way. AMUNC 2011 will not provide conference parking. Most of the park-ing is either permit or paid parking (with a limit of 2-3 hours) between 8.00am and 5.30pm Monday to Friday. Between these times free parking on campus is very limited and to only 2-3 hours at a time. On street parking around ANU is limited and ticketed Monday – Friday. Therefore we strongly encourage delegates to reach ANU by other means of transport.

If you plan on parking on campus, look for pay and display parking, and be aware of parking regulations on ANU campus (see page 13).

The High Court of Australia (HCA)The High Court of Australia is located in Parkes Place, south of Lake Burley Griffin. Over-looking the lake, the HCA is recognisable by its high walls of glass and concrete.

Bus

Public transport to the HCA is advised, as parking is limited and restricted to 1-2 hours only. Take bus routes 2 and 3. Both depart from City Bus Station Platform 2 (East Row), and is a 10-15 minute journey. Alight at the HCA/Department of Finance in the Parlia-mentary Zone.

5RegistrationRegistration for all delegates will take place 10am - 2pm on Sunday 10th July at the John Curtin School of Medical Research (JCSMR); building 131, grid reference C4 on the campus map (page 13).

You can reach this from Civic by taking bus route 934 from City Bus Station Platform 4. Get off at Garran Rd (near Graduate House) and walk downhill to JCSMR.

You will need to bring one form of photo identification that has your full name and date of birth, such as a driver’s license, student ID card, or passport. Formal business attire is to be worn.

Directors will register on Saturday 9 July, the same day as director training. All directors should receive more information about this via e-mail.

There is plenty to see and do around the nation’s capital! Options include those within Canberra itself and around the region, with options to suit any budget.

In Canberra

Home to Australia’s vast collection of national treasures and attractions, Canberra offers plenty of options; ranging from the sights and sounds of the National Film and Sound Archive, Questacon and the National Museum of Australia, to the works of celebrated artists at the National Gallery of Australia or the National Portrait Gallery. Alternatively, check out a performance at Canberra Theatre Centre or Street Theatre.

Outdoor possibilities include cycling or walking around Lake Burley Griffin, or exploring Black Mountain and Black Mountain Tower.

If you are a ‘foodie’, discover the rich diversity of eateries around Civic, Manuka and Kingston, including the Old Bus Depot Markets (open Sundays), which also sell high quality art and craft made locally.

Learn about and savour the taste of truffles at the Capital Country Truffle Festival; running throughout much of July in various locations around Canberra. For more information see http://www.trufflefestival.com.au.

Surrounding region

Discover the secrets of the Poacher’s Way or sample fine wines at one of Canberra’s many renowned wineries. Canberra District winemakers are well-known for varieties of Viognier, Shiraz and Riesling.

Take advantage of a white winter at Perisher Valley or Thredbo, which come alive during the colder months for skiing and snowboarding. You can also explore some of Australia’s most picturesque countryside and scenery by horseriding through the Snowy Mountains or trekking through Kosciuszko National Park.

Monday 11th July

‘Get to know your committee!’ DinnerVarious locations around Civic

Canberra has the most restaurants per capita in Australia. There is no shortage of fine dining! Committees will be spread throughout the mouth-watering Italian, spicy Indian, exotic Mediterranean and stunning Asian eateries of Civic. We will celebrate the commencement of debate, get to know the committee, and bond over the best cuisine Canberra has to offer!

Tuesday 12th July

‘The Golden Age of Hollywood’ NightThe Australian War Memorial

Classic Hollywood: Feel like a superstar under a classic World War 1 filmset.A silhouette on the window, jumpy jazz and soaring sopranos a lawless world of racketeering and small time thugs, femme fatales and eager sleuths...Is this how you imagined the Golden Age of Hollywood? Wine and dine, surrounded by a famous World War 2 plane, the Lancaster bomber and a rare German air fighter. A shining star in the AMUNC week, War Memorial Night is not to be missed.

Under 18? Don’t worry, you can still attend all social events!

Note however, that AMUNC 2011 has zero alcohol tolerance for those under 18 years of age. Australian legislation regarding alcohol consumption strictly applies to all events at AMUNC 2011.

Wednesday 13th July

Circus NightMeche Nightclub

Roll up, roll up! Step out of Canberra and into the Big Top for a night filled with festivities. Slip off your tie, push up your sleeves and prepare for a night at the circus. Just for you, AMUNC has transformed Canberra’s premier Nightclub, Meche, into a circus of fire twirling and other magical performances. Prepare to experience the unexpected and see sights beyond your wild-est imagination! Be awed, be amazed, be dazzled by the night with incredible perfor-mances and pumping music until late. AMUNC’s circus night is set to show all MUN around the world how to take socials by storm!


Friday 15th July

General Plenary SessionsHigh Court of Australia and National Gallery of Australia

In one of the most exciting re-vamps, the 2011 Secretariat would like to welcome delegates to a new and innovative structure to the Friday program. The restructure seeks to draw on the wonderful prospects created by of the selection of Canberra and the Australian National University as the hosts for AMUNC in 2011.

Most importantly, there shall be two, simultaneous plenary sessions. In attendance will be the Chief Justice of the High Court; and the Hon Professor Gareth Evans. This is a wonderful way for all delegates to actively engage in the Friday program and will culminate in a politicking, hard-line negotiation, intelligence gathering and diplomacy.

Following these sessions, delegates are then invited to come together for lunch in the Public Hall of the High Court of Australia before the 17th session of the Asia-Pacific Model United Nations Conference is drawn to a close at the official Closing Ceremony.

‘Under the Southern Cross’ Finale BallThe Great Hall, Australian Parliament House

It's not everyday that you can party in the heart of Australian politics! From the marble foyer, delegates will enter the Great Hall - Australia’s premier ballroom. With high ceilings, mood lighting, fine food and free-flowing wine, the Great Hall is a stunning venue for a formal occa-sion. The finale ball will be the final chance for delegates to party, as well as farewell (temporarily!) all the new friends they have made. So after dinner, we are going to break out the band and head out with a bang!



Our ‘what-to-wear’ guide is packed full of wardrobe tips for the week!Daytime conference proceedings expect business attire to be worn. This includes all formal events and committee sessions. For Committee Dinners, many delegates wear the same business attire as worn during that day. You are free to also do so, or change your outfit – up to you!

Each social event is themed, and while we encourage everyone to dress accordingly, it is not a requirement of entry that you strictly adhere to this. You must however, take note of the key obligations regarding each social event; detailed below.

Wednesday 13th July: Circus Night

Combine the glamour of Meche nightclub with the frivolity and fun of circus per-formers by donning cocktail wear and adding a circus twist! This is your chance to be creative in both style and dress. We can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Do not wear any clothing related to army uniform or war as you will not be allowed inside. Do not bring any knives, guns or similar objects – not even toy ones.

Tuesday 12th July: ‘The Golden Age of Hollywood’ Night

Ladies: Think white gloves and hoop skirts, flapper skirts, feather boas, satin gloves, fur wraps, cloche hats, and curled hair.

Gentlemen: Consider grey or black pinstripe suit, white shirt, black or grey tie, top hats and fedoras, french moustaches, suspenders, cummerbonds, waistcoats, windsors and dress shoes.

Draw inspiration from Fred Astaire, Clark Gable, Marlon Brando, Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Rita Hayworth and Marilyn Monroe.


Friday 15th July: ‘Under the Southern Cross’ Finale Ball

As the Finale Ball is the most formal social event of the week, black tie attire is to be worn. Think suits, iron your shirt, and feel free to wear the silk, as we celebrate the memorable week that was!

11Will it be cold?Yes! Is the simple response. While Canberra is not the coldest part of Australia, it is located inland, and its winters are colder than what you would find along the coast. Winter in July will on average range from 3 - 12°C during the day, with potential to drop to -4°C at night.

Canberra receives little rainfall, but don’t be deceived by the blue skies and sunshine! We would definitely advise you to bring a coat, especially for night time events - the sun sets around 5.00pm. You may also like to bring an umbrella or raincoat in the event of wet weather.

Please note that security is taken seriously at the Australian Parliament House. No knives, guns or plastic explosives. You will need to clear security (similar to Airport Security, except that you can keep your shoes on), prior to entering.

• Be aware of relevant security measures at socials venues

• Bring suitable attire for both daytime and night time conference events and the weather

• Some buildings on ANU campus may require some distance of walking, so those in heels may wish to alternate with flat shoes.



Preparing for committee sessionsTo save paper and time we encourage you to bring a laptop to AMUNC! Especially if you are the High Court of Australia! It will keep you up to speed in committee and ensure you can draft committee documents, access committee material and online resources. We want to make sure your time at AMUNC is as enjoyable as can be!

12Information TechnologyInternet

All delegates based at the ANU will have internet access through the ANU-Access net-work. Each delegate will have their own individual login details, which directors will hand out. If you are registered with the Eduroam network, you can also use this network for internet access.

No internet access is available at the HCA.

Position Papers

Your Position Paper is due Sunday July 3rd. Upload to your committee site available at http://www.dropbox.com.

How to submit position papers

The Committees Team and your directors will email you specific instructions on how to upload your position papers.

Printing

In accordance with our commitment to sustainability, we encourage you to keep your documents in electronic format as much as possible. Please use your committee’s file storage site for sharing documents amongst others.

Limited printing will be available, only for working papers and resolutions. Only directors and conference staff will have access. You should print out any research you might need prior to arriving at AMUNC.
