Walking Veggie and Fruits in the SUB ?

How often do you get told by a Brazilian bumblebee or a red-headedpea to compost your food scraps? If you weren’t in the SUB duringour last Eco-Friendly Day, you missed out on Ana the Banana, CuteBumblebee, Foxy Pea, and Sexy Grape parading and picketingaround the SUB. It was in this spirit that the first Eco-Friendly Daytook place last Sept. 25.

The Eco-Friendly Day was inspired by a project developed bystudents from Agricultural Sciences (AGSC) 450 from the faculty ofland and food systems. This class aims to teach students throughcase-based learning how to integrate knowledge learned throughouttheir degree in dealing with real world issues related to UBC’s foodsystem. Each AGSC group ultimately provides recommendations tothe department studied by them. These departments include: UBCSustainability Office, UBC Food Services, AMS Food and Beveragedepartment, UBC Waste Management, and UBC Farm.

This class creates the opportunity for students to gain hands-onexperience with various food-related departments across campus. Inaddition, students are able to aid staff and faculty in devisingsustainable solutions/innovations for their departments/outlets thatmany times their busy routines would have not allowed them to do.

The Impacts Committee, an AMS sustainability group comprised ofstudents, staff, faculty, and clubs, worked on the recommendations ofthese students throughout the summer of 2008 to make their projectsa reality by that fall.

Eco-Friendly Day was created to raise consumer awareness of foodchoices and sustainability initiatives as part of a larger effort to helpthe AMS lighten its ecological footprint as stipulated in the AMSLighter Footprint Strategy. Recently, a new line of menu items were

launched at AMS Food and Beverage department outlets that arelocal, organic, or/and vegan (LOV). These products were created tohelp make our food system more sustainable, by providing support tolocal growers, sustainable production methods, and accessibility tofoods that have a lighter ecological impact – ultimately helping provideopportunities for customers to make more informed purchasingchoices. This new LOV product line is promoted on Eco-Friendly Dayat every AMS Food and Beverage department outlet in the SUB.

There are a variety of other sustainability initiatives the AMS isintroducing from green discounts, provision of free range eggs, andfair trade items, to recycling and composting. Ultimately, this initiativeseeks to raise awareness, participation, and support among students, faculty, and staff of AMS Sustainability efforts and other campussustainability initiatives to help our campus and the broader communitybecome true leaders in sustainability.

It is hard to stay positive when we know that we need a paradigmshift to alter the current course of environmental degradation. However, people can take time to incorporate new habits and ideas totheir routines. A new and accessible initiative always provides anopportunity for change. So if we can’t change the world all at once,we can at least spread the LOV around! So come down nextThursday, Oct. 30, to check how much LOV the AMS outlets can offeryou!
