for over 40 years under its predecessor the Amref International Training
Centre (AITC).

WHO WE ARE
Amref International University (AMIU) is an accredited institution of higher
learning focused on health sciences and is fully owned by Amref Health
Africa.
Vision: To be a leading university of excellence in developing transformational
health leaders and practitioners who inspire lasting change in Africa.
The University is located on Lang’ata Road (opposite Wilson Airport), Nairobi,
Kenya.
AMIU is founded on the experience and intellect of Amref Health Africa,
which is reputed with over 60 years of quality, innovations in community
health and health systems management interventions.
We focus primarily on health sciences with a commitment to progressively
develop innovative programmes catering to the present and future needs of
African populations.
AMIU currently has an Institute of Research, Innovation and Consultancy
and a School of Health Sciences with five departments:

• Laboratory Sciences

AMIU programmes are informed by the latest thinking and most up-to-
date research focusing on equipping health workers with skills, knowledge,
competencies and values to enable them respond to the Universal Health
Coverage (UHC) agenda.

AMIU is a world-leading research university dedicated to
examining challenging health issues and working to affect
real change in the world. We focus on African health issues
and solutions, particularly public health and community
health issues. Deliberate effort is made to ensure research
outputs are applied to develop solutions to health issues
and problems in respective African communities and
countries and the continent at large.
INNOVATION IS OUR CULTURE
We nurture an environment of innovation by facilitating incubation of novel ideas
and mentoring incubates. We are in partnership with industry leaders to ensure the
commercialisation of technology and novel products.
CONSULTANCY
We offer quality and timely consultancies in research and evaluation of health and
education programmes, strengthening health systems, capacity development, and
creating solutions.
WE SHARE OUR KNOWLEDGE
We manage two dissemination platforms: The Africa Health Agenda International Journal
(AHAIJ) an online peer review journal where we publish scientific and best practice articles;
and Africa Health Agenda International Conference (AHAIC) held every 2 years.
Partnerships and collaborations: Amref International University works in collaboration with several
local, regional and international Institutions of Higher Learning and Research such as University of
Nairobi, Moi University, USIU and Kenya Methodist University, University of Pretoria, University of
Ryerson, University of Robert Gordon, University of Liverpool, University of Alberta, among others.
The collaborations entail the exchange of faculty and students, joint research and joint applications for
regional and international consultancies, among others.

NEW ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES INTAKE FOR MAY AND SEPTEMBER
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN COMMUNITY HEALTH PRACTICE (BSc CHP)
The development of Bachelor of Science in Community Health Practice is
informed by Amref Health Africa’s firm foundation in community health
practice for over 60 years and Africa’s need for practioners who are well
equipped to ensure effective implementation of the universal health care.
Inherent are the principles of diversity, equity and inclusivity.
Entry requirements:
» KCSE (or equivalent) Certificate with a minimum aggregate of C+
• minimum of C in Biology and Chemistry
• minimum C in English/Kiswahili and Mathematics/Physics;
» KACE with a minimum of two principal passes
• including Biology and subsidiary passes in Chemistry, Mathematics/
Physics;
» Diploma (with a mean grade of C) in Public Health, Environmental Health,
Clinical Medicine, Pharmacy, Community Health, Human Nutrition;
» The equivalent or Higher National Diploma (HND) in Public Health,
Environmental Health, Clinical Medicine, Pharmacy, Community Health,
Human Nutrition or the equivalent of any of these qualifications from an
institution recognised by the University Senate.
Career Opportunities include:
Public health departments of Ministries of health and local and international
non-governmental organisations (NGOs) as project and programmes
managers.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN HEALTH SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT AND
DEVELOPMENT (HSMD)
This course is designed to produce graduates with knowledge, skills
and attitudes (competencies) for efficient and effective health systems’
management and development to ensure lasting health change in Africa.
Health Systems Management and Development is a developing area that
requires urgent attention for the health sectors in Africa to appropriately
respond to the health needs of populations and deliver the Universal Health
Coverage (UHC) agenda.
Entry Requirements:
» KCSE (or equivalent) Certificate with a minimum aggregate of C+
• minimum of C in Biology and Chemistry
• Minimum of C in English/ Kiswahili and Mathematics/ Physics (or
equivalent) certificate with C+ for Biology and Chemistry;
» KACE with a minimum of two principal passes including:
