Starting point3 overlapping phases of LED transition in lighting business
Phase 1Technology is / will shortly be equivalent / competitive to existing technology
- Pioneers, small projects, learning phase
- „Bridge products“: Fluorescent luminaires with LED light sources
- Retrofit products (tubes, bulbs)
Phase 2LED technology superior, cost decrease, interesting ROI
- Growing volumes @ decreasing costs
- Dedicated LED luminaires; still in old form factor & style
- Optimized LED luminaires & supply chain
Phase 3New solutions, new features, marriage of Haitz & Moore
- New form factors, new lighting products
- Additional features; further integration; complete new systems
- New use-cases, new business models
Phase LED bulb technologies

Update LEDThe law of Haitz is still valid
Performance
Cost
Trend towards simple solutions / cost – out / „quality tiering“
Quality of light (high tier)
TCO (total cost of ownership) (mid tier)
Mainstream (low tier)
Entry level (emerging markets)

Update OLEDWaiting for Godot – will he ever come ?
Performance
Cost
Gap to LED increases
New LED technologies start to offer similar USP´s
3 possible scenarios – depending on technology & application development
OLED Technology still very exciting … but no fast selling item and no magic bullet

Activities Zumtobel GroupUpdate LED & OLED
LED
Central purchasing function for the Zumtobel Group with one lead buyer for LEDs / LED modules
Comparable tiering in all brands (Thorn, Tridonic, Zumtobel)
Bundling of specifications and volumes of all brands
Growing share of wallet for Tridonic
Shifting of production volumes to Asia (CoB; non-dimmable LED drivers)
OLED
Conceptual work of first office luminaires finished, but no business case yet
OLED versions of actual products foreseen in near future
Tridonic offers OLED modules and drivers, but today's volumes are small
Zumtobel Group always used minimalistic approach (only specification, qualification and finetuning /
optical outcoupling), further outsourcing of OLED activities possible

Activities Zumtobel GroupExternal standardization
Zhaga
Both Tridonic and Zumtobel member of consortium
Tridonic is offering Zhaga compliant modules and enlarges this part of the portfolio
Thorn checks usage of Zhaga compliant modules in standard products
Further standardization activities
Zumtobel Group active in several other standardization consortia: DALI, Connected lighting alliance, TALQ, Lighting Europe and ZVEI/ÖVE activities
Zumtobel Group active in EC wide research programs and projects with the aim to build prototypes and test installations of future intelligent lighting systems
Other activities
First projects with leading customers asking for additional functionality

Activities Zumtobel GroupThe role of controls
ControlsZumtobel has already a high number of lighting management installations (approx. 10.000 installations of Luxmate professional, Luxmate Emotion and Litenet)
First part of successor product Litecom launched at light & building 2014
Compatible with old systems, upgrade of old installations possible
Unmatched connectivity to building management systems and other field systems (BACNET, KNX, OPC, DALI)
Modern cloud solution
Easy integration of Apps (for example Sequence luminaire)
Lighting performance package launched for performance management of existing and new controls installations; allows comparison between installations and optimization as a service offer
First service packages launched
Tridonic offers / shows new basicdim easy system for single rooms, for lighting OEMs
Thorn offers / shows outdoor controls and connectivity into streetlight management systems and first samples of LiFi communication between street lanterns

Executive Summary
LEDs: Performance increase and price decrease will go on for the next 3-5 years; big companies with systematic approach best positioned to increase margins between fast decreasing component costs and slower price decrease in end products
OLEDs: Not ready yet; strongly depending on a fast moving application in consumer electronics to earn huge investments back; lighting alone too slow to achieve satisfying RoI
Integration potential of LEDs will be used, bringing intelligence and connectivity into the lighting and luminaires business; first in the premium segment.
Internal standardization will yield complexity reduction and cost savings mainly in standard products
External standardization is not ready yet and has difficulties to keep pace with fast technological changes along the whole value chain (LEDs, drivers, controls, interfaces)
The world of lighting controls will change significantly – but the complex lighting and building requirements do not yet match with easy to install plug‘n‘play RF solutions
Internet of things or smart lighting are no buzz-words – first installations will be seen in the next years
