Focus Task 1 – Spider Safari!
We have a Science based task for you to start with this week. It follows on from ‘Bug Safari’
(included as one of the Choosing Board activities from week 4)….
1. Go on a ‘Spider Safari’ around your home! Carefully explore where you live looking for spiders. If you find one draw
what it looks like. You could also try and identify what type of spider it is. A free spider ID guide can be downloaded
from: https://www.opalexplorenature.org/sites/default/files/7/file/Spiders-in-your-home.pdf
What do you notice? Things to talk about …
How many types of spider did you find?
Which type of spider was most common?
Where do spiders like to live (their habitats)?
What do spiders eat?
Can you find spiders anywhere else, e.g. balcony, shed, garage, garden?
Did you find any baby spiders? Or spider’s eggs? Do the babies look like the adults?
2. Try this outdoors…. Where can you find the greatest numbers of living things? Tie 4 sticks or rulers together with rubber bands or string to make a frame (quadrat). Choose a piece of ground and put
down the frame. Identify how many different living things you can find inside the frame and record what they are. Now
choose another piece of ground and repeat the above. If you cannot go outdoors, you could count how many different
living things you can spot inside – what about ants, flies, people, or plants?
What do you notice? Things to talk about …
Where did you find the most/least living things?
What types of plants and animals did you find?
What was the most interesting thing you found? How do the plants and animals survive in the cold?
3. Spider Webs
….See if you can find a spider’s web. Maybe you could draw a very careful diagram of it. You could also draw and label a
detailed diagram of the spider that made the web. Can you work out the species of the spider from the shape of the
web? More help is available for identifying the spider in this link: https://www.uksafari.com/spiders.htm
FURTHER INFORMATION: Spider web silk can be 5 times stronger than steel but 1000 times thinner a human hair! There
are over 650 different species of spider in the UK and the shape and structure of their webs can help identify the spider
that lives there. Find out more by clicking this link: https://www.nhm.ac.uk/discover/spider-
webs.html?gclid=CjwKCAjw7LX0BRBiEiwA__gNw_RssPOiQMtdivQMEnEH7JfxSwA8MSVU1mXi_IaZL0XRyrpyvBa5jhoCA0QQ

You could….
- Make a table and/or graph to show the different spiders or living things you have discovered.
- Make an advert for a perfect home (habitat) for a spider. What must it include? What would every potential ‘property’
need to meet a spider’s needs? You could even make a 3D model of your design…..use your imagination!
- Learn all about spider webs! You could learn about angles and protractors….
https://www.mathsisfun.com/geometry/protractor-using.html How to use a protractor
https://mathsframe.co.uk/en/resources/resource/470/Angle-Alien-Attack Angle Alien Attack Game
https://nrich.maths.org/1235 Estimating Angles on NRICH
- Read about different spiders we can find in our home:
https://www.opalexplorenature.org/sites/default/files/7/file/Spiders-in-your-home.pdf You could research a different
spider and write an informative report (similar to the way information is presented in an encyclopedia entry) about your
chosen spider or create a factual poster.
- Practice your timetables…We found 3 spiders…how many legs are there altogether? There are 30 legs altogether….how
many ladybirds are there?
- Ask a Biologist, https://wowscience.co.uk/resource/ask-a-biologist/
*Remember to add your work (or Science Selfie!) to your Class Dojo Portfolio to show your teacher.
Focus Task 2 – A Picture Paints a Thousand Words
Let’s write a story! There are lots of places to find ideas to write a story such as from books, songs,
listening to stories and many more things. My favourite way is by looking at a picture and
imagining the ‘story’ behind it.
Take a look at these pictures and choose one...
Then watch this...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zy7XEMeBROQ
Imagine that you jump into the picture too and have a look around you. Behind, to the side, above...what do you see?
What can you smell?
What do things feel like?
What sounds can you hear?
What is happening now? What has just happened? What will happen next?
Are you part of the story, or are you watching from a safe distance?
Write or draw as many ideas to help you with your story as you like. Anything you think of, write/draw it so that you
remember all your ideas.
Ask someone in your house to question you about your story – remember Who? What? Where? When? Why? How?
You could:
Draw a story map with the characters, setting and events in order like this...
Complete a story mountain to plan your story
Tell the story out loud before you write it
Remember to add your work to your Class Dojo Portfolio to show your teachers!
Year 3 and 4 ideas: Year 5 and 6 ideas:
Remember to think of a beginning, middle
and end.
Use plenty of adjectives (describing words).
Include similes and metaphors to add
interest.
Read your work to check that it makes sense.
Use Year 3 and 4 ideas.
Include time connectives e.g. eventually,
meanwhile…
Choose to set your story in the past, present
or future.
Is your story in the 1st or 3rd person?
Remember your ‘WOW words’!

MAGNETIC COINS
Where have you
seen this writing?
Can you find out
what the whole
sentence says? Can
you find out who
said it?
Sir Isaac Newton
famously once said
“If I have seen
further it is by
standing on the
shoulders of giants”
meaning that he
made his
discoveries by
building on the
work of other
scientists. He was a
very influential
mathematician,
physicist and
astronomer who’s
work on the laws of
motion and gravity
shaped all our lives.
His words are now
around the edge of
£2 coins. You could
try using a fridge
magnet to find out
which coins are
magnetic. How will
you record your
results? How will
you explain your
results? This
website has more

TIME LAPSE PHOTOS
Time lapse
photography is a
great way to
observe changes
over a longer
period condensed
into a shorter
film. Apps can be
downloaded onto
smartphones or
tablets for this
purpose. You
could take
pictures of:
- A piece of fruit
or a vegetable
decaying
- A plant growing -
- Growing a
vegetable scrap –
carrot tops or
celery are great
for this. This
website has all
the advice you
need:

I SPY WITH MY
LITTLE EYE
What do you
think has been
magnified in this
photograph? Look
very carefully at
the shapes you
can see and the
similarities and
differences
between them.
It’s pollen! You
can find out more
about pollen by
clicking the link
below.

cle/pollen/353649
You could use a
hand lens or a
microscope to
look at some
other things very
closely, but don’t
worry if you can’t
as you can use
this great website
instead.

MOTIVATE ME!
You can find
quotes
everywhere,
motivating you to
be positive, kind,
hardworking or
happy. There are
lots of ideas in the
Bible too.
Or
Can you find your
favourite quote
from the Bible?
Make it into a
poster to display
it in your room.
PWY YDW I?
If you have the game, great!
If not, put ‘Guess Who’ in your
search engine and you will see lots of images of people to play the game
