Youtube and Digital Storytelling Assignment:

For this assignment, we made our own Youtube channel, if we didn't already have one,

and were instructed to make two different videos. The first video we were to make, was a video

of us teaching something. We were shown many examples of how to make our videos look and

sound appealing, such as adding transition and fading in and out of videos. We learned how to

apply music to our projects, as well as use many different applications to make it.

!For the second video, we were to use digital storytelling. We had to create a story, design it, and

present it as a video. Just like for the first video, we were provided with many examples on how

to go about doing this assignment. We got to choose from many different applications and

created our story.

!!Youtube and Digital Storytelling Review:

I am pretty familiar with youtube, as are most people my age. I’ve used it to post concert

videos, and watch just about everything else in the world. Ive known youtube as a casual way to

pass/waste time, or learn how to do random thing like cook salmon correctly. I have never

created or posted videos being the person showing how to do something. I’ve only been the

person on the other side of the computer doing the learning, from the video. So this assignment

was taking something that I felt like I was fairly familiar with and putting a spin on it. This

assignment would fall under the 21st century education pillar of project based learning. This is

because of the aspect of taking what you know and working with it more in order to present it to

someone else. In my classroom, I will definitely use youtube and digital storytelling as a tool to

help children learn. Having a child, or a group of children work together to make a video to

present an idea that they have learned, shows their level of understanding of the subject. Letting

a child show what they know by creating a video is so much better that giving them a written test

on the subject. If someone can explain an idea to someone else, they develop an even higher

level of understanding that they had before, and this is what schools need to work toward. When

using an assignment such as this in my classroom, I would set the children's goal and presenting

something specific, rather than broadly anything that we had in this class. Giving them a broad

idea of a subject such as teach something that we learned about fables, will leave them room for

creativity, while keeping them on the topic that I wish to assess.
