Putting students first to make learning last a lifetime.Celebrating academics, diversity, and innovation.
Another great year of qual-ity education in Pasco is under-way and our schools are full of bright-eyed young learners. This year we are celebrating 130 years of educa-
tion by “Honoring the Past, Celebrat-ing the Present, Preparing for the Future.”
Throughout the year we hope to high-light not only the great things that are happening right now in our schools, but also some of the great moments in our history that have led us to become a community steeped in Pasco Pride. We also plan to show you how bright our future is by sharing the wise words, hopes, and dreams of mem-bers of the Class of 2015. Be sure to visit our Facebook page and website for Throwback Thursdays and Future Fridays.
In this issue we learn some interest-ing facts about the history of Edgar Brown Memorial Stadium, a world-
class venue that has been home to state champions and hosted profes-sional athletes. We look to the future with the good news that all three of our schools currently under construc-tion—our McClintock and Curie STEM elementary schools, as well as our community partnership in Delta High School—are on time and on budget. We celebrate the present with great stories about students who are making a positive difference and achieving great honors.
I would also encourage you to take our survey included in this issue, which can also be accessed on our website, www.psd1.org. Your par-ticipation will provide information to help us best serve Pasco students, families, employees, and community members.
Thank you for your continued support of our schools and the students we serve.
Warmly,
Sherry Lancon, Board President
Dear Friends and Neighbors,

As we celebrate 130 years of the Pasco School District, we take a look back at the proud history of one of our most prominent facilities, Edgar Brown Memorial Stadium. Did you know:• The stadium was formerly a gravel
pit. Owner Edgar Brown sold it to the Pasco School District in 1953 with the stipulation that it not be used for commercial purposes.
• The first Pasco Invitational Track and Field Meet was held there on April 14, 1962.
• When the stadium was grass, it was the site of the Shrine Circus and an annual 4th of July fireworks display.
• The stadium served as the home
field for the Columbia Basin College Hawks when they won the national junior college football championship.
• The Seattle Seahawks used to host their preseason training camp there before moving it to Cheney.
• Artificial turf was first installed in 2002. It was deemed safer for athletes and allowed for multiple uses year-round.
• The turf was replaced and the track was resurfaced in August 2014. Now, Edgar Brown Memorial Stadium is home to the only all-weather, in-ground public high school track west of the Mississippi River.

Pasco School District board members, employees, fami-lies, and friends celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony
for Marie Curie STEM Elementary on Aug. 14 near the already active con-struction site at 715 N. California Ave.
Planning Principal Valerie Aragon led the festivities saying, “It is fitting that our newest STEM school will be named after a woman who valued and trea-sured the opportunity to learn. At Marie Curie STEM Elementary we will also stress the importance of obtaining an education immersed in the world of STEM.”
Instead of breaking the ground, board
members took soil from the building site and added it to the pot of a plant which will become part of the Curie campus in 2015. Future Curie STEM Elementary students Mariela Huezo, Lianna Delgado, Joshua Hernandez, and Joaquin Barajas then added water
to the plant.
This was the third groundbreaking cer-emony for new Pasco schools since June. The District celebrat-ed the start of Barbara McClintock STEM Elementary, located at 5706 Road 60, on June 19 and the new Delta High School, lo-cated at 5801 Broad-moor Blvd., on June
25. All three schools are scheduled to open August 2015.

District Celebrates Groundbreaking for Curie STEM Elementary
Pasco School District’s newest school, Rosalind Franklin STEM Elementary opened its doors to nearly 800 students on the first day of school, Aug. 26.
The first flag was raised over the school that morning by members of the Coyote Ridge Corrections Cen-ter Honor Guard as Principal Deidre
Holmberg led students and employ-ees outside to witness the ceremony. Pasco High School band students played the Star Spangled Banner.
Students, families, and community members also enjoyed touring the building and meeting teachers and staff during an open house and dedication ceremony on Oct. 23.
Students and employees gather around the flag pole as members of the Coyote Ridge Corrections Center Honor Guard raise the school flag for the first time on Aug. 26.

Construction Progresses on Time at Three New Pasco Schools
The two-story classroom wing of Marie Curie STEM Elementary takes shape this September.
Construction crews continue to make prog-ress on time and on budget at Pasco’s new schools: Delta High School and McClintock and Curie STEM elementary schools.
Curie contractors expect to have the brick gymnasium/cafeteria walled in and its steel rafters installed this fall, says Capital Projects Director Kim Marsh, while foundation work on Delta High School and McClintock STEM Elementary is expected to be complete or near completion by late fall.
Stevens Middle School Among Top in State for Sportsmanship
Angelou Elementary School has estab-lished a new leadership program for fourth and fifth grade students this fall: Recess Referees. Approximately 24 students are nominated by their teachers each month to serve as referees during lunchtime recess.
“We just make sure kids are doing what they’re supposed to,” says fifth grade recess referee Karina Cossman. “We’re another pair of eyes for the playground
duties. It’s an honor to be chosen, and it’s very fun!”
The students take turns filling the 12 daily referee positions. They are as-signed to a particular playground area, such as the soccer field or four square court. They have a whistle and wear a striped vest. Their job is to encourage good sportsmanship, oversee games, and they can initiate a game where there isn’t one going on.
Angelou Elementary Launches Recess Referee Program
Fifth grade students Brooklyn Arroyo, Karina Cossman, Mia Wiberg (above, left to right), and Jasiah Ramos (left) are pictured while on recess referee duty recently.
Stevens Middle School was one of only three middle schools in Wash-ington to earn a sportsmanship
award from the Washington Interscholas-tic Activities Association (WIAA).
The 2013-14 WIAA “Give Me 5” Gold Star of Excellence for Middle Level Sportsmanship was presented to Stevens for the school’s outstanding efforts in promoting sportsmanship in and out of competition.
“Parents from visiting teams stop me on the way out of games thanking me for the positive environment we set at Stevens and say ‘I wish our school would do the same,’” says Athletic Director Dwayne
Hughes. “That’s why we do it. It’s not just our athletes that benefit. It’s all ath-letes.”
As a part of the school’s “Give Me 5” campaign, Hughes makes an announce-ment about the value of good sports-manship at every seventh and eighth grade game and hands out a button to someone—whether a player, coach, fan, or even a referee—who demonstrates outstanding sportsmanship.
“We took our campaign to a whole other level. Being one of three schools out of thousands in the state is awesome,” says Principal Charlotte Troxel.

CHS Wind Ensemble Invited to Prestigious National Festival
The Chiawana High School wind en-semble is one of just 16 featured bands invited to perform at the 2015 Music for All National Festival in Indianapolis in March. They are only the fifth high school band from Wash-ington to be invited since the festival’s inception in 1992.
In addition, this talented group of student musi-cians was recently selected to perform in Spokane this February at the 2015 Northwest Conference of the National Association for Music Education.
“These are the highest honors you could hope for in a band program,” says CHS music teacher Kevin Clayton.
About 50 students hope to be able to travel to the national festi-val this spring. They will host several fundraisers throughout the year begin-ning with a multi-family garage sale Nov. 8 to help cover the estimated $1,500 per student cost.
“These are really dedicated kids,” says Clayton. “They earned the honor.”
Every year, eight dedicated Pasco School District employees are nominated and chosen by their peers to receive the Staff Achievement Award. The 2014-15 award winners are: Kim Lovelace (nurse, Whittier Elementary), Sheila Fricke (Nutrition Services trainer), Rebecca Wall (library clerk, Livingston Elementary), Jill Little (fifth grade teacher, McGee Elementary), Judy Dietzen (science teacher, Pasco High School), Lois Petty (Special Education paraeducator, Angelou Elementary), Tammy Plewman (fifth grade Spectrum teacher, Livingston Elementary), and Kim Smith (paraeducator, Livingston Elementary). They will receive $1,500 and up to five days release time to use for professional development.
