TRANSCRIPT

Eventually we worked together on

several committees and on the

Brandeis Board of Directors.

When Norma took over as our

chapter’s bulletin editor, she pro-

duced not only the chapter bulletin,

but colorful and interesting fliers for

various events sponsored by our

chapter. We really bonded the year

that we were part of the contingent

that represented our chapter at a

leadership conference held at

Brandeis University in Waltham, Ma.

Norma & I also discovered that

we had similar golfing abilities. We

signed up for so many “Frick & Frack”

2-man tournaments, when we called

each other on the phone, “Hello Frick

- Hello Frack” became our standard

greeting. We also worked together on

the WGA Ladies 9 Hole Board of

Directors.

When Norma learned that she

was nominated as president she

called on me for advice knowing that

I was a Past President of the chapter.

We met several times, going over her

responsibilities, and setting up an

agenda for the coming year. I sat

proudly at her installation, not know-

ing that within a few short weeks, she

would be gone. Frack, I will most

definitely miss you.

Linda Novick

It was the spring of 2014; I was

attending the Great Neck Public

Schools’ Retirement luncheon. My

friend Marion said to me, “go over

to the blond-haired woman seated

at the South Middle School table

and introduce yourself,” so I did.

We had just purchased a winter

home in Florida and Norma and

Stuart lived in the same Golf and

Country Club. We had a friendly

conversation and agreed to touch

base with each other, in Florida.

The summer passed, and Howard

and I arrived at Wycliffe. I attended

the opening breakfasts of the three

of the not-for-profits and was wel-

comed royally. But it was at the

Brandeis opening breakfast some-

thing special happened. A woman

walked up to me and said, “I re-

member you from the Great Neck

retirement luncheon, welcome to

Brandeis and Wycliffe!” Little did I

know how much my new friend,

Norma would make such an im-

pact, as I entered retirement life!

Norma, Stuart, Howard and I be-

came fast and close friends! As for

me, before I knew it, I was very

involved in Brandeis! Norma was

the editor of the bulletin and she

noted, I enjoyed working with com-

puters as well. I needed to write

something for the bulletin and

asked Norma to “edit and grammar check

it for me.” While she was editing, she let

me know, “I” would be the next editor of

the Brandeis Bulletin. For me, this was a

great compliment; Norma was an excel-

lent teacher and good at everything she

does.

Norma and I shared happy, sad, and

troubling moments together. Through

adversities, her upbeat attitude, bubbly

personality, and strength preailed. I will

remember and love her always.

Norma and I met when she first moved to

Wycliffe through a mutual friend. My

friend introduced Norma to our Brandeis

chapter, where we would meet again and

again at several study group sessions.

Norma and I and discovered that we

shared many similar interests.

“Magnify the Mind” — Advancing Neuroscience Reserch

Mission Statement: Brandeis National Committee is dedicated to providing philanthropic support to Brandeis University, a distinguished liberal arts and research university founded by the American Jewish community. Its

membership is connected to the university through fundraising and through activities that reflect the values on which the university was founded: academic excellence, social justice, nonsectarianism and service to the

community.

Our season will kick off with our Opening Breakfast November 2, described elsewhere in this newsletter. Other special events to look forward to include favorites such as Randy Del Lago’s program on the play Gypsy on Wednesday, December 19, an evening of music from students from Lynn University to be scheduled in January, and the Book and Author Luncheon on March 1. And of course we have our full offering of wonderful study groups.

And while our programs and study groups will enlighten and entertain us throughout the season, they will raise money for a new initiative for the Brandeis National Committee. They will support the Magnify the Mind:

Advancing Neuroscience Research Campaign. With help from all of us, BNC will raise $500,000 this coming year to purchase a resonant scanning two

photon microscope. This microscope will enable Brandeis researchers to take 30 to 50 images a second as they observe brain activity in real time, helping scientists in their efforts to make new discoveries toward the understanding and treatment of brain disorders.

Brandeis has long had an outstanding neuroscience program. Nobel Prize winner Michael Rosbash, MacArthur “genius” grant recipient Gina Turrigiano, and world-renowned neuroscientist Eve Marder are all pioneers in the field. Their breakthroughs have helped transform our understanding of neuro-degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and autism.

Each of us know many people who have been affected by these brain disorders, which makes this a very meaningful campaign for us to support.

Joan Tepper, President

BNC IS CELEBRATING IT’S

70 TH ANNIVERSARY

A Legacy 70 Years Strong ~ and Growing As Brandeis marks its 70th anniversary, the 25,000 members of the Brandeis National Committee,

which is also celebrating its 70th anniversary, have much to boast about: Over seven decades, their

organization has raised $141 million in support of Brandeis.

Today, in 41 chapters across the country, the BNC continues its support of the university it helped

found in 1948. The organization has made significant contributions to Brandeis, including fund-

ing neurobiologist Piali Sengupta’s lab, enabling the expansion of the Gerstenzang Science Library,

establishing the University Librarian chair and supporting student scholarships.

“BNC efforts have significantly advanced the goals of the Brandeis library, the heart of our institu-

tion,” says Matthew Sheehy, Brandeis National Committee University Librarian.

“Like all libraries, ours is evolving to reflect the different ways people access and use scholarly re-

sources. Throughout our history, the BNC has helped us launch many new endeavors, and stay rel-

evant to the community and the academic lives of our robust student body. I am thankful the BNC

provides such strong support for our mission.”

“Brandeis has a treasure in the BNC,” says Ron Liebowitz, the university’s president. “From book

drives to fill the shelves of our libraries, to a campaign to bring the latest brain-imagery technology

to campus, the BNC has supported Brandeis for 70 years, helping whenever asked. I am incredibly

grateful for all the BNC and its members have done and continue to do for Brandeis.”
