WRITING EQUATIONS IN SLOPE-INTERCEPT

FORMStandard Form

Review

Slope intercept form: y = mx + b

Standard form: Ax + By = C

We have been working with slope intercept form when writing equations of lines. Today we will look at standard form, and convert an equation in standard form to slope intercept form so that we can identify slope and y-intercept.

STANDARD FORMTo write an equation from standard form into slope intercept form, do the following:1.Write the equation y = mx + b.2.Write out the equation that you have been given.3.Rearrange the equation so that it is in the form of y = mx + b.4.State the slope and y-intercept.

Example: Write 6x + 3y = - 24 in slope intercept form.

y = mx + b Write out equation of a line.

6x + 3y = -24 Write out equation that was given. -6x - 6x Rearrange equation. 3y = - 6x – 24 Solve ( divide by the number in front of y). y = -2x - 8

Write 5x – 3y = 6 in slope intercept form. Identify the slope and y-intercept. Graph your line.

m =b =y =

Time to practice……

Write the following equation in slope intercept form. State the slope and the y-intercept. Draw the line. 2x – y = -3

m =b =y =

Graph the following equation: 2y = 6x – 4

m = b =y =

Graph: 4x – 3y = 3

m =y =b =
