• soliloquy (n.): long speech to oneself– In Shakespeare’s play Romeo and

Juliet, one of Juliet’s first soliloquies is on her balcony.

sacro (holy)

• sacrosanct (adj.): divine; holy– The wedding band is sacrosanct

symbol of marriage.

uni (one)

• unison (n.): harmony; agreement– Paddeling in unison is a difficult

task; however, it is beneficial to get a rhythm.

ness (quality)

• vagueness (n.): unclear– If you are vague in your directions,

you can often put yourself and others in danger.

alt (high)

• altitude (n.): height above sea level– This mountain peak’s altitude is

high above sea level.

ics (art)

• politics (n.): methods; “art of policies”– If you are interested in studying

politics, you should become a political science major in college.

iso (equal)

• isosceles (adj.): two equal sides– An isosceles triangle has two equal

sides unlike the equilateral triangle, which has three equal sides.

• divert (v.): detour; deflect–When road crews are working, it is

necessary to divert traffic.

ate (cause)

• insinuate (v.): hint; suggest–With his closing argument, the

lawyer insinuated his client’s guilt.

• discord (n.): conflict–My friend doesn’t like discord in our

friendship, so she will avoid talking to me sometimes.

• empress (n.): female ruler of an empire–During her reign, the empress

renamed one of the cities.

muta (change)

• immutable (adj.): unchangeable– An immutable formula is E=MC2.

fug (flee)

• subterfuge (n.): a ploy to escape consequence; scheme
