OnSaturday,RMUwasledbyforwardRebeccaVintasthesophomoresetanewpersonalrecordforgoalsscoredinasingle-contestwithfive.Withthefivegoals,VinttiedtheRMUprogramrecordformostgoalsscoredinonegame.TwoofVint’sgoalscameonRMUpowerplays,whichallowedhertotietheprogramrecordformostpowerplaygoalsscoredinasinglegame.ThehattrickmakesVintjustthesixthplayerinprogramhistorytotallyatleastthreegoalsinasingle-contest. Welcome to the CHA Duringtheoffseason,CollegeHockeyAmericahasexpandedfromafourteamleaguetoasixteamleague.LongtimeCHAmemberNiagaraUniversitydroppeditswomen’shockeyprogramwhichopenedaslotforanewteam.LastseasontheCHAannoucedPennStatewouldjointheconferenceforitsinnaguralDivisionIyear.TheCHAdecidedtoexpandtoasixteamleaguewhenLindenwoodUniversityandRITshowedinterestinjoiningtheconference.TheexpansionoftheconferencewillallowtheCHATourna-mentstructuretochangeallowingtheTournamenttobeplayedoveraneightdayspan.

ColontinoledRobertMorriswomen’shockeytounprecedentedheights.HehelpedRMUbreakitsprogramrecordforwinsbytheendofJanuaryandfinishedtheseasonwith19victories,anamazing13-winimprovementfromthepriorseason.Despitebeingpickedtofinishlastintheleagueafterthelossoftheprogram’sall-timeleadingscorer,RMUpostedthehighest-everfinishinleagueplayunderColontino’sguidance,withthemostCHAwinsandpointsever,andalsoresetschoolrecordsforlongestwinningstreakandlongestunbeatenstreakduringthecourseoftheseason.

Colontino,whopreviouslyhadclaimedCHACoachoftheYearhonors,ledthesquadtooneofthebiggestregular-seasonwinsinprogramhistoryJan.21whenRobertMorrisscoredtwiceinthefinalthreeminutestodefeatconferencepowerhouseMercyhurstforthefirsttimeever.ThevictorynotonlyendedtheLakers’28-gameconferenceunbeatenstreak,butitwouldserveasaharbingerofthingstocomefortheColonials.

RMUenteredthe2012CHATournamentasthesecondseed,butwithtop-seededMercyhursthavingwonninestraighttournamenttitles,theLakerswereclearlystilltheteamtobeat.AfterdispatchingofNiagarainthesemifinals,RobertMorrisandMercyhurstmetwiththechampionshipontheline.TheColonialsopenedupatwo-goalleadwithinthefirst12minutesandneverletMercyhurstpullevenasRMUheldonfora3-2wintodethronethelongtimeCHAchampions.

RobertMorris’successoccurredduetodramaticimprovementsonbothendsoftheice.RMUbrokethesingle-seasonschoolrecordsforbothoverallgoalsandgoalspergameasitaveragedoveronegoalpergamemorethanlastseason.TheColonials’progressonthedefensiveendwasevenmoreevidentasRMUwasoneofeightsquadsnationallytoallowfewerthantwogoalspergameasRobertMorrisallowedapproximately1.90goalspergamefewerthanitconcededduringthe2010-11season.

BeforecomingtoRobertMorris,ColontinohadservedasassociateheadcoachatMercyhurstsince2006.AtMercyhursthehelpedguideteamstotheNCAATournamentineachofhisfiveyears,includingearningtwoFrozenFourberths,andhasoveradecadeofwomen’shockeycoachingexperienceattheDivisionIlevel.

InColontino’sfiveseasonswithMercyhurst,theLakerspostedanoverallrecordof148-25-9(.838),advancedtothenationalchampionshipgameonce,madetwoFrozenFourappearances,qualifiedfortheNCAATournamentfivetimes,wererankedNo.1nationallyineachseasonandwonfiveCollegeHockeyAmerica(CHA)tournamentchampionshipsandfiveregular-seasontitles.ImmediatelyafterColontinoreturnedtoMercyhurstasassociateheadcoach,theLakerswent32-2-3in2006-07,claimingtheprogramrecordforvictories,astheyregisteredanine-winimprovementfromthepreviousseasonandwererankedNo.1nationallyfor13weeks.Afteraone-goallossintheNCAATournamenttotheeventualnationalchampionsendedtheLakers’2007-08season,the2008-09squadreachednewheights.EnteringtheNCAATourna-mentona15-gamewinningstreak,Mercyhurstadvancedtoitsfirst-everFrozenFourwithavictoryoverSt.LawrenceandproceededtotopMinnesotainathrillingsemifinalcontesttomoveintothenationalchampionshipgameagainstWisconsin.TheLakerswererankedNo.1for23weeksthefollowingseason,went30-3-3andadvancedtotheFrozenFourforthesecondstraightseasonbeforesuccumbinginovertimetoCornell.
