Abstract

Air pollution has a direct impact on human healthand environment. By reducing air pollution levels,we can reduce the global burden of disease. Thisproject attempts to develop an effective solutionfor pollution monitoring using wireless sensornetworks (WSN). Harmful gases like CO2 and COwill be monitored because these gases decidethe degree of pollution level.

Problem Statement &Motivation

Air Pollution

Two (2) million premature deaths in Indoor air pollution

Outdoor air pollution is estimated to cause 1.3 million deaths worldwide per year

Problem Statement &Motivation

In 1955 the first laws were passed to help with air pollution control. The APCA (Air Pollution Control Act) was implemented by the Federal government in the United States.

Objective

General

Determining whether an area is meeting the standards

Evaluating changes in air

Specific

In Industry

Air pollution

It is an undesirable change in the physical ,chemical or biological characteristics of air.

Pollutants.

Two types

Primary Pollutants

Secondary pollutants

Primary pollutants

Primary Pollutants are airborne particles that are emitted directly from identifiable sources.

1. Man made sources2. Natural sources

Secondary Pollutants

Secondary Pollutants are not emitted directly into the air, but form in the atmosphere from reactions taking place between primary pollutants.

• SMOG (Smoke + Fog)

• VOG (Volcanic + Smog)

• Ground Level Ozone

Effects of Air Pollution

Watery eyes, coughing, or wheezing, diseases such as bronchitis, asthma, lung cancer, tuberculosis and pneumonia.

Irritation or breathing difficulties

CO has more affinity for hemoglobin

Depletion of ozone layer

Acid rain

Greenhouse effect or global warming
