ThisoperatingsystemmarksabigchangeinthewayMicrosoftdoesthingsandnotbecauseit’sdrasticallydifferentfromWindows7orWindows8.1.

Infact,thoseofyouwhothoughtWindows8wasn’tverymouseandkeyboard-friendlywillbepleasantlysurprisedwithWindows10.ButthisOSstillkeepsthebestfeaturesofWindows8aswell.Sowhat’sthebigdifference?

Windows10isafreeupgradeforthoseusingWindows7,Windows8,andWindows8.1–thefirsttime

Microsofthasofferedmillionsofpeoplefreeupgradestoanewoperatingsystem.TheupgradefromWindows8to8.1wasfree,butthatwasmorelikeinstallingaservicepack.Windows10isadifferentoperatingsystem.

Butdon’tworry,Windows10won’toverwriteyourdocuments,filesandprograms.Windows10isalsodesignedtobepartofwhatMicrosoftcallsOneWindows–asingleoperatingsystemwhereyoucanaccessprogramsandfilesacrossawidevarietyofdevices.Usingtheiruniversalapps,youcanopenandeditthesameWorddocumentonyourPC,WindowsPhone,TabletorevenyourXboxOnegameconsole.You’llevenbeabletoplaysomeXboxconsolegamesonyourcomputer,phoneortablet.YoucouldevendownloadappsforyourAndroidphoneandtabletoriPhoneandiPadthatwouldallowyoutoworkonthatsameWorddocumentandsaveittoyourfreeOneDriveCloudStorage,whereyoucanpickrightupwhereyouleftoff.

AnotherbigchangewithWindow10isthattherewillbeautomaticupdates.Sothere’slesschanceofyoumissinganimportantsecurityupdateorbugfix.

WhyisMicrosoftofferingthisupgradeforfree?It’sintheirbestinteresttohaveasmanypeopleaspossibleonthesameoperatingsystem.Atonepointthecompanyhad4separateoperatingsystemstosupport:WindowsXP,WindowsVista,Windows7andWindows8&8.1.That’scalledfragmentationanditmakesnotonlysecurity,butthedevelopmentofnewappsandservicesverydifficult.Withthemajorityofusersononeoperatingsystem,it’smucheasiertokeepthingssecureaswellasdevelopnewproductsandservices.Appleoperatesmuchthesameway.Theymaketheirmoneyfromrelativelyexpensivedevicesandofferfreeupgradestotheiroperatingsystemsthatmostpeoplechoosetotake.

Microsoftisonlyofferingthisfreeupgradeforoneyear.So,youneedtoupgradebyJuly29,2016togetitforfree.Thatdoesn’tmeanthatthoseofyouwhohaveupgradedwillhavetostartpayingin2016.Yourupgradeisgoodforthelifeofyourcomputer,justlikewhenyouinstallanOSfromadiscordownload.Butthosewhochoosenottoupgradebythenwillhavetopayaround$100iftheywanttoupgradetoWindows10.

WhileWindows10isintendedforuseacrossseveraltypesofdevices,thisguidewill

focusonWindows10onyourPC.

BetterBackUpTheupgradetoWindows10shouldn’toverwriteanyofyourfilesorprograms.Butitisalwaysagreatideatobackupyourimportantfilesbeforeyoudoanykindofupgrade.Infact,allofyourimportantfilesshouldbebackedupjustincasenomatterwhat.

I’dsuggestcopyingphotos,musicanddocumentstoanexternaldriveorcloudaccountjusttobeonthesafeside.Andifyou’vegotyourdrivemirroredtoanexternalback-updrive,that’sevenbetter.

What’sGoingAwayInWindows10Forthemostpart,youshouldn’tloseanyprograms,files,photosordocumentswhenupgradingfromWindows7,Windows8,orWindows8.1toWindows10.Butyouwilllosesomefeaturesofpreviousoperatingsystems.

MediaCenterUsersofWindow7HomePremium,Window7Professional,Windows7Ultimate,Windows8ProwithMediaCenter,andWindows8.1ProwhouseMediaCenterwillprobablybedisappointedtoseethatitisremoved.ThisisnottobeconfusedwithWindowsMediaPlayer,whichisincludedinWindows10.MediaCenterallowedyoutowatchandrecordliveTVandalsoviewDVDmovies.

USBFloppyDriveSupportIfyou’reusinganexternalfloppydrivepluggedinviaUSB,it’snotgoingtoworkunlessyouareabletodownloadadriverfromthemanufacturer’swebsite.

ThenmyPCwelcomedmebackandMicrosoftshowedmetheirnewtermsofservice.AfterIagreed,IhadtheoptiontouseExpressorcustomsettings.Iwentwithexpresssettings,becauseIcanalwaysgobackandcustomizemysettingslater.(Don’tworry,there’splentyofdetailsinthisguideonhowtodothat.)ButyoucanalwaysclickonLearnmoretofindoutmoreaboutyouroptions.

ThenextscreenwilltellyouaboutthePhotos,Music,Movies&TVandMicrosoftEdgeapps.Ifyouuseexpresssettings,they’llbeyourdefaultappsforthetaskstheyperform.Now,youcanalwaysgobacklaterandchangethedefaultappswithoutmucheffort.Again,don’tworry.Wegointoalotofdetailaboutthat.IjustclickedNexttogetstarted.

Alongcolumnwillopenfromtheright,offeringnotificationsforthingsliketheSocialappandSkype.You’llalsoseealarmsandcalendareventsandnotificationsfromtheWindowsStore.ItoperatesmuchinthesamewaythatnotificationsforAndroidphonesandtabletsandiPhonesandiPadsdo.Youcanclickonthenotificationstotakeactiononthem.
