an easier to see Task Bar, and

multiple desktops.

The bad of "Windows 10" consists of

defaulting to lots of privacy issues, the

loss of "Windows Media Center",

o Defaulting to lots of pop-up

"Notifications"

o Defaulting to lots of privacy

issues

7

THE LOSS OF THE "WINDOWS

MEDIA CENTER"

According to

http://www.microsoft.co

m/en-

us/windows/windows-

10-specifications:

8

THE LOSS OF THE "WINDOWS

MEDIA CENTER" (continued)

If you have Windows 7 Home

Premium, Windows 7 Professional,

Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 8

Pro with Media Center, or Windows

8.1 Pro with Media Center and you

install Windows 10, Windows Media

Center will be removed.

9

THE LOSS OF THE "WINDOWS MEDIA

CENTER" (continued)Watching DVDs requires separate

playback software ("Windows 10"

does not have "Windows Media

Center")

Two options for playing DVDs:

Free "VLC Media Player from

"videolan.org"

or

the "Windows DVD Player" app which

is free for some upgraded computers

10

11

12

DEFAULTING TO LOTS OF POP-UP

NOTIFICATIONS

"Windows 10" has a new "Action

Center" that has an icon in the

"Notification Area".

This "Action Center" pops up a

lot of notifications by default.

This notifications can be

annoying. They can be

suppressed.

13

DEFAULTING TO LOTS OF POP-UP

NOTIFICATIONS (continued)To suppress pop-up notifications:

Click on the Start button.

Click on the "Settings" gear icon.

Click on "System".

Click on "Notifications & actions".

Turn off "Show me tips about

Windows".

Turn off "Show app notifications".

14

DEFAULTING TO LOTS OF POP-UP

NOTIFICATIONS (continued)

Turn off "Show notifications on the

lock screen

Turn off "Show alarms, reminders

and incoming VOIP calls on the

lock screen.

Turn on "Hide notifications while

presenting".

15

DEFAULTING TO LOTS OF POP-UP

NOTIFICATIONS (continued)

Close the "Settings" / "System"

window by clicking on the "X"

button on its upper-right corner.

16

DEFAULTING TO LOTS OF PRIVACY

ISSUES

The privacy issues surrounding

"Windows 10" are summarized

at

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Win

dows_10#Privacy_and_data_col

lection

17

DEFAULTING TO LOTS OF PRIVACY

ISSUES (continued)

The issue of privacy is best viewed

from a larger perspective such as

the analysis at

http://www.gnu.org/proprietary/pr

oprietary-surveillance.en.html

18

DEFAULTING TO LOTS OF PRIVACY

ISSUES (continued)

It is up to you to determined

how much information

Microsoft and other companies

can store about you.

19

DEFAULTING TO LOTS OF PRIVACY

ISSUES (continued)

Many free software programs

are available to help you

control what information

Microsoft can gather from your

use of "Windows 10".

20

DEFAULTING TO LOTS OF PRIVACY

ISSUES (continued)

The best free software utility

for configuring privacy settings

in "Windows 10" is

O&O's ShutUp10

which you can download at

http://www.oo-

software.com/en/shutup10

21

DEFAULTING TO LOTS OF PRIVACY

ISSUES (continued)

If O&O's ShutUp10 does not work

well for you, Kim Komando

recommends the free Ashampoo

"AntiSpy for Windows 10" which

you can download at

https://www.ashampoo.com/en/us

ADVANTAGES OF "WINDOWS 10.."

• Free Upgrade

• Better Graphics Resolution

• Restored "Start Menu"

• Multiple Desktops

• "AeroSnap" Improvements

• Features Carried Over from

"Windows 8" and "Windows

8.1"

23

FREE UPGRADE

Three ways to get the free

upgrade from "Windows 7.." or

"Windows 8.1" to "Windows

10..".

24

BETTER GRAPHICS RESOLUTION

"Windows 10" has better

graphics resolution relative to

previous versions of

"Windows..":

When you upgrade to

"Windows 10.." photos and

videos will probably appear

sharper

25

BETTER GRAPHICS RESOLUTION

(continued)

My "WinTV" television tuner

provides a sharper over-the-air

television screen, after I

upgraded from "Windows 8.1"

to "Windows 10".

26

BETTER GRAPHICS RESOLUTION

(continued)

"Windows 10" has the new

"DirectX 12" video "application

programming interfaces"

(APIs) for third-party software

developers to communicate

with.

27

30

THE RESTORED "START MENU"

By default, an improved "Start

Menu" is back

(and the unpopular "Start

Screen" that was in Windows

8.1 is no longer a default. It is

now an option called "Tablet

Mode".).

31

32

33

THE RESTORED "START MENU"

(continued)

There still are two columns in the

"Start Menu":

34

35

THE RESTORED "START MENU"

(continued)

The left column looks like the left

column in Windows 7's "Start

Menu":

36

37

THE RESTORED "START MENU"

(continued)

The right column is a

grid of "tiles" like those in

the "Start Screen" of

"Windows 8" and

"Windows 8.1":

38

39

THE RESTORED "START MENU"

(continued)

Many tiles in the right side of the

"Start Menu" are "Live tiles" but

you can right click on them to turn

them off.

40

THE RESTORED "START MENU"

(continued)

The desktop applications that

you install into your computer

such as Quicken, Firefox,

Chrome browser, Microsoft

Office, LibreOffice, games etc.

are at the bottom of the "All

Apps" submenu.

41

42

43

44

THE RESTORED "START MENU"

(continued)

This means that you will

probably have to scroll

vertically downward in order to

see the programs that you

have installed into your

computer:

45

THE RESTORED "START MENU"

(continued)

Drag the top of the "Start

Menu" to re-size the height of

the "Start Menu".

(You cannot do this in all

previous versions of

"Windows..".)

46

47

Multiple

desktops:

48

Use the "Task

View" button to

create multiple

desktops.

49

The "Task View"

button is on the

left side of the

"Taskbar":

50

51

MULTIPLE DESKTOPS (continued)

When you click on the "Task View"

button, all windows that are

running in your current desktop will

be displayed as equal-sized

thumbnails, even if they are

actually minimized:

52

53

54

MULTIPLE DESKTOPS (continued)

After you click on the "New

desktop" button, "Task View"

shows you a new desktop

thumbnail AND the new,

empty desktop which will have

no windows in it yet:

55

56

57

MULTIPLE DESKTOPS (continued)

The new desktop is shown to

the right of the existing

desktop and the original

desktop is now called

"Desktop1":

58

59

MULTIPLE DESKTOPS (continued)

Each time you click on "New

desktop":

you get a new empty desktop

60

61

MULTIPLE DESKTOPS (continued)

To have "Task View" show a

specific desktop, hover the

mouse cursor over the

thumbnail of the desktop and

all Windows inside the desktop

will be displayed above the

thumbnails:

62

63

MULTIPLE DESKTOPS (continued)

To move a window to a

different desktop, drag it to the

thumbnail of the desired

desktop:

64

65

66

MULTIPLE DESKTOPS (continued)

To go to a desktop, click on its

thumbnail.

67

MULTIPLE DESKTOPS (continued)

The Taskbar in each desktop

will only show you the windows

that belong to that specific

desktop.

68

MULTIPLE DESKTOPS (continued)

When you close a desktop, all

windows that belong to it will move

to the desktop that is to the left of

the closed desktop.

69

Improved

"AeroSnap"

and "Snap

Assist":

70

IMPROVED "AEROSNAP" AND

"SNAP ASSIST"

(Similar to "Windows 7,

"Windows 8", and "Windows

8.1"), you can drag the title bar

of a window to top of the

monitor screen to maximize

the window so that it covers up

the other open windows:

71

72

73

74

IMPROVED "AEROSNAP" AND

"SNAP ASSIST" (continued)

(Similar to "Windows 7,

"Windows 8", and "Windows

8.1"), you can drag the title bar

of a window to the left or right

edge of the monitor screen a

corner to create a "Snap" to

half of the monitor screen.

75

76

77

78

IMPROVED "AEROSNAP" AND

"SNAP ASSIST" (continued)

Unlike to "Windows 7",

"Windows 8", and "Windows

8.1", you can drag the title bar

to a corner of the monitor

screen to "Snap" to one

quadrant of the monitor

screen.

79

80

81

82

IMPROVED "AEROSNAP" AND

"SNAP ASSIST" (continued)Similar to "Windows 7",

"Windows 8" and "Windows

8.1", you can use the

"Windows Key" combined with

the four "arrow keys" to move

a window to the two side-by-

side halves of the monitor

screen.

83

IMPROVED "AEROSNAP" AND

"SNAP ASSIST" (continued)(Unlike for "Windows 7",

"Windows 8" and "Windows

8.1"), you can use the

"Windows Key" combined with

the four "arrow keys" to move

a window to any of the four

quadrants of the monitor

screen.

84

IMPROVED "AEROSNAP" AND "SNAP

ASSIST" (continued)

After you snap one window to a

quadrant corner or a horizontal

half of the monitor screen,

"Snap Assist" pops up thumbnails

of other windows for you to click

on to also snap them to the

remaining corners or horizontal

half of the monitor screen:

85

86

87

88

IMPROVED "AEROSNAP" AND "SNAP

ASSIST" (continued)

If you do not want "Aerosnap"

and "Snap Assist", you can

disable them by stopping and

disabling "Themes" in the

"Services" Management Console

by running services.msc from an

"Command Prompt (Admin)".

89

FEATURES IN THE "WINDOWS 10..

TECHNICAL PREVIEW.." THAT ARE ARE

CARRIED OVER

FROM "WINDOWS 8.1"• File History

• System Image Backup

• Storage Spaces

• Hyper-V (in the "..Pro" and

"..Enterprise" editions only)

• Windows To Go (in the

"..Enterprise" edition only)

90

FEATURES IN THE "WINDOWS 10..

TECHNICAL PREVIEW.." THAT ARE ARE

CARRIED OVER

FROM "WINDOWS 8.1" (continued)

Several computer journalists agree

with me that the many of the

advantages for running "Windows

10" are the features that were either

new or carried over from "Windows

8" and "Windows 8.1":

91

FEATURES IN THE "WINDOWS 10.."

THAT ARE ARE CARRIED OVER

FROM "WINDOWS 8.1" (continued)• The enhanced version of "Hyper-V"

(in "Windows 10 Pro.." and

"..Enterprise..", is the only virtual

machine program that can create a

"virtual machine" has a virtual

"Secure Boot" module running inside

a "EFI". This is critical for testing the

most advanced distros of "Linux".
