a note from the publishers
We are extremely excited about the future of publishing and the unique opportunities that our publication has vaulted us into in 2013 and beyond. For the Families, LLC (the company that publishes Wichita Family Magazine)
will be debuting an extraordinary concept in the Fall that few magazines in the country are doing (at least to our knowledge) and we certainly hope that you, your friends and your family will be part of it as we move forward. Between now and August, we’re asking for your help. “Like us” on Facebook and subscribe to our digital issue online at our website at www.wichitafamily.com. Tell your everyone that you know and encourage others to be a part of what we think will be an extremely pleasant surprise. We have always hoped to be able to help families in our community and we think we’ve found a way to do so, in a manner that few other organizations are doing - certainly in the publishing business. With your help (and only with your help), you can insure that our dream comes true. As we move closer to revealing our surprise, we’ll continue to update you, both on our Facebook/Twitter sites and on our website. We’re looking forward to the future and we’re excited that we’re not alone - we’ve got a family of families behind us!

iCan Bike is more than just a bike-riding program. For many children with disabilities, it’s a seemingly impossible task they can typically master in less than a week’s time. Within days, many children exhibit independent behaviors for the first time ever. This achievement, in turn, creates a gateway of opportunity, helping them gain assurance and self-reliance in many other aspects of their lives.
iCan Bike, a program that teaches children and adults with disabilities to ride conventional bicycles without training wheels, is taking applications for its 2013 camp. The camp will take place July 15-19 at the Wichita Ice Center, 505 W. Maple St. Five camp sessions are scheduled to take place over five consecutive days, which can accommodate a total of 40 campers.
Independent Living Resource Center, an agency that helps people with disabilities live more independently, has hosted iCan Bike formerly known as the Lose the Training Wheels camps in Wichita since 2006.

believe it --- but this (camp) is amazing. My daughter is riding. I am so proud of her.”
iCan Bike uses specially-adapted bicycles, trained professionals and special training techniques to help people who haven’t been able to learn to ride. The camp also uses teams of volunteers, many of whom return each year. With 75 minutes of instruction per day for five consecutive days, more than 80 percent of campers learn to ride a conventional bicycle independently by the end of the camp.
To be eligible to enroll, participants must be at least eight years old. They must have a disability but be able to walk without an assistive device such as a walker or cane. They must be able to side-step quickly to both sides. Participants must have a minimum inseam measurement of 20 inches and weigh no more than 220 pounds.
The cost of the camp is $125, with a limited number of scholarships available. For more information or to obtain an application, call 942-6300 extension 232; or download an application at ilrcks.org. Applications and payment must be received by June 21.
We are pleased that local and national businesses recognize the benefits of our camp. Special thanks to Amerigroup RealSolutions, Bombardier Learjet, Cox Communication, Davis-Moore Autogroup, and Westar Energy. And let’s not overlook the local businesses; Cargill, Cessna Textron, Cox Communications, NuStar Energy, and Walgreens, who encourage their employees to take the time to volunteer.
Independent Living Resource Center is a nonprofit agency that provides services and support to more than 2,000 people with disabilities each year. Services include information and referral, job readiness training, computer training, independent living skills training, peer support, medical equipment loans, payroll services for direct services workers, social and recreational activities, advocacy, and community education. Since 1984, ILRC has been empowering people with disabilities in south-central Kansas.

Changes to 2013-2014 enrollment process
News and Information from our partners at Wichita Public Schools
The Wichita Public Schools will be implementing a new student information system over the summer which will require the district to change the enrollment process this fall. During the week of enrollment, all parents are required to come to the school to obtain a new parent access code to the new system. Family Access, the current system being used, will no longer be available after June 13 and parents’ current username and password will no longer work.
Enrollment will be a different online process this fall. During this transition, only the student’s Pupil Information Form (PIF) will be available to complete online. Other forms will be available to download and complete electronically, which can be printed and delivered to the school. Computers will be set up at schools to allow parents to complete the forms online if they do not have access to a computer at home. This may cause some delays in the enrollment process.
Parents can log onto https://familyaccess.usd259.net/ now
until June 13 to make sure their current information is saved in the system. This will help with the change to the new system and make the enrollment process in the fall a little easier for parents.
Please check the district’s enrollment Web site, www.enroll.usd259.org, during the summer months for the latest information.
Enrollment for the 2013-2014 school

The best parties bring together great food, great ingredients, and great friends. To make your party stand out, take advantage of resources you already have to create an inviting and
warm atmosphere for party guests.
The Right Ingredients Make for a
Perfect Summer Get-Together
Everyone knows the key elements to a fantastic back yard barbeque are great company, exciting conversation, and delicious recipes — so be sure to pull together the perfect picnic menu that will keep your guests’ smiles as
warm as the summer sun. Get creative when planning your
summer party. Kids will also love to get involved and add their own personal touches to the big event. Simple items, such as blankets, oversized pillows, Mason jars and mismatched dinner ware will create the feeling of home and comfort to all. These simple additions, along with essential recipe ingre dients like the new Hellmann’s Real Whipped Tangy Dressing, will make for an amazing summer menu and party for your
friends and family. Here are a few tips to make your outdoor party simple and smooth:
n Opt for Appetizers Many party guests will want to nosh and mingle throughout the evening, so make sure you have plenty of appetizers, dips and chips on hand. This Easy Asiago Dip offers a cheesy kick with the use of just a few ingredients, including Hellmann’s Real Whipped Tangy
Dressing. Made with high-quality ingredients like oil, vinegar and cage-free eggs, this dressing offers a sweet and tangy taste that’s also
creamy and delicious.
n Self-Serve Drink Stations Allow guests to refill their drinks themselves by placing a pitcher of drinks on a small end table or cart. Cover it with a brightly colored tablecloth and stacked glasses. Don’t forget your ice bucket and tongs to keep drinks cold. If you are serving beer or wine, ice them down in coolers placed next to the drink station. Be sure to position the station away from the food to keep
lines from forming.
n Stick with Simple Don’t spend all of your resources on fancy courses that require countless hours of preparation. Choose simple crowd favorites, such as sandwiches, salads and sweets that can be created in a snap. Just create, plate and cover with plastic wrap and you’ve got the menu covered for a fabulous party. For added simplicity, serve buffet-style so guests can pick and choose while you enjoy the party. A simple dish, like Zippy Ham Salad Sandwiches or tuna melts made with Hellmann’s Real Whipped Tangy Dressing, is a great option that can be made quickly and cut into quarters to be
served as finger food.
