Activity 1: “Find someone who…”

Aim: This activity aims at (1) warming up and (2) recounting your experiences in doing research in your daily life, creating a confidence in yourselves in your capacity of conducting research. Mode of communication: 1. Interviewing2. Opinion sharing3. Wrapping up

Interviewing (15 minutes)

- Take the handout “Find some who…”

- Circulate and interview people (stopwatch!)

Activity 1: Opinion sharing (10 minutes)

DiscussionAGREE or DISAGREE? WHY?

1. Searching information (about the things or the persons we are interested before buying or being friends with them) can minimize the risk of making mistakes and the likelihood of being regretful.

2. Don’t waste time searching the information from different sources for it is likely to confuse you. You are highly advised to rely on only ONE source.

What is research?

What is research?

– simply find a satisfactory answer to the question

• “a systematic investigation to find answers to a problem” (Burns, 1994, p. 2)

• the research process “1 is being undertaken within a framework of a set of philosophy; 2 uses

procedures, methods and techniques that have been tested for their validity and reliability; and 3 is designed to be

unbiased and objective.” (Kumar, 1996, p. 4)

Activity 2: “Let’s be a researcher!”

• Mode of communication: group work• Time: 15 minutes• Aim: involve the participants in experiencing

joining some first initial stages in doing research in order to familiarize them with doing research (chasing away the fear of getting involved in such an academic activity)

Form a group of 3 – 4 students

15 – minute discussion

“imagine you are researchers, discuss these questions in groups” (see Appendix 2)

What is research?

• Mode of communication: group work • Time: 15 minutes• Aim:- encourage all of the audience to get involved in

arousing (burning) questions in their head and “triggering” them to be research questions.

- build confidence in the students in their capacity of starting the very first phases of becoming a researcher.

A list of suggested research questions closely related to student life (see Appendix 5)

• Work in your favorite groups

• Discuss the topics captivating to you or generate many other topics of your concerns and interests.

• (you are also encouraged to think about ideas for the 8 required contents) (Appendix 4)

• Mode of communication: group work• Time: 15 minutes • Aim: - Help the students be aware of the benefits of

doing research- Then stimulate them to participate in

research activities, especially the upcoming research one.

•Work in group of 3 or 4•Discuss the questions in the Appendix 6

Wrap up!!! Numerous websites

discussing the numerous benefits of doing research!!!
