I was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey on September 7, 1917.

My family was originally from South Carolina and Virginia. Like thousands of black migrants, they moved to the North hoping to find better jobs and a better life.

In 1930, at age 13, I followed my mother to Harlem, NY. I was one of the first artists trained in and by the African American community in Harlem, studying at both the Harlem Art Workshop and the Harlem Community Art Center.

The black community played a crucial role in my development as a young man and artist. The black intellectuals and artists who strongly influenced me included Aaron Douglas, Ralph Ellison, Langston Hughes, Alain Locke and Richard Wright.

The Great Migration, the Depression, the Jazz Age and the Harlem Renaissance greatly influenced me and my art. As a result, I became one of the storytellers or “visual griots” of my Harlem neighborhood.

I was only in my twenties when my Migration Series made me famous. The series depicted the epic Great Migration of African Americans from the rural South to the urban North.
