Middle School students share the same campus as the high school students. However, our school building is independent of the High School.◦ Entrance/Exit

Daily Times

Start Time Period 1:◦ For students participating in band,

chorus, orchestra and enrichment◦ 7:45 a.m. start time

Period 2:◦ First academic period, all students◦ 8:30 a.m. start time

Dismissal All students will be dismissed at 3:00

p.m.

Buses make two trips in the morning, early and late, to accommodate students attending first period.

Buses also make three trips in the afternoon◦ regular dismissal (3:00)◦ 2 late buses (4:30 & 5:45) to accommodate students

staying after school for extra help and/or extra-curricular activities.

Middle school students have an opportunity to take honors level courses in 7th (math) & 8th (math & ELA)◦ Math Honors Information

◦ ELA Honors Information

Redesigned Enrichment programs for ELA & Math built into the day

All middle school students have the opportunity to take enrichment courses throughout the year.

Different courses are offered each semester.

Courses for 6th grade enrichment have included:◦ Philosophy, Logic & Debate

◦ Creative Problem Solving

◦ Mock Trial/Supreme Court Cases

◦ Road Trip USA

Physical Education is co-ed

6th and 7th graders do not change for physical education.

8th grade students have the option to change for physical education and are assigned lockers. Locker rooms are supervised by school staff.

All grades have separate lunch and recess times

Lunch and recess are supervised by the faculty

Lunch is not shown in the class schedule – but it is scheduled @11:07am for grade 6

2 teams per grade level with half the grade’s students

Each Middle School team is comprised of ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies teachers

Students have classes with and participate in activities with fellow team members and team teachers

Elective (“specials”) are a blend of both teams

Teachers create interdisciplinary projects and activities that coordinate units of study across disciplines

Team field trips and activities

Flexible use of team time – periods can meet in any order and be rearranged to accommodate student needs

Teachers know every aspect of our students’ academic and social growth

Teachers build strong connections with their students, getting to know them well

Parent conferences are conducted with all academic teachers present (Math, Science, English, and Social Studies)

5th grade students will visit the Middle School in late June

Administration and support staff to coordinate with 5th

grade staff at Washington Irving

Open House in July/August (TBD) for students to visit and tour the Middle School

8th grade ambassadors to greet students on 1st day of school

Teambuilding activities on the 1st day of school

FLEX Period

Students are assigned a counselor – loop all three years with the students

Counselors support the academic and social growth of all students

Counselors work on many adolescent issues such as changing peer relationships and character education

Support services also include speech, English as a New Language, reading AIS, math AIS, and before/after school homework help (office hours)

All middle school students are recognized quarterly for:

◦ Principal’s Honor Roll (96+ average)

◦ High Honor Roll (90-95 average)

Students in middle school receive a numeric grade based on a 100% scale

Report cards are available quarterly online via the Portal

Progress reports are available mid-quarter with a Pass/Fail grade and a comment from the teacher

Parents may contact the team leader at any time throughout the year to request a team meeting to discuss the progress of their child

PARENT PORTAL provides 24/7 access to data:◦ Attendance, up to the minute grades, missing assignments, etc.

Agenda Book and Planner

◦ On the first day of school each student will receive an agenda book/planner. In the front of the agenda book is a student handbook with all school rules and other useful information.

◦ The agenda book is an alternate way to keep track of homework assignments and school responsibilities.
