Narratives vs. Stories

Shifting from a threat based narrative…

“You never want a serious crisis to go to waste… What used to seem like long-term problems… things we have postponed for too long… are now immediate and must be dealt with. The crisis provides the opportunity to do things that you couldn’t do before.”

Finding and Flipping Orthodoxies

Orthodoxies are deeply held beliefs about “how things are done” that may or may not still be true, but that often go unstated and unchallenged and can become blind spots over time.

Every organization and industry has them:

What are orthodoxies?

Grocery Stores Banks Airlines

Thinking about the orthodoxies

of community foundations

Instructions

Deal out the full deck of cards around your table.

Look at your hand of cards & ask:

– Does it still hold true for you? Should it be flipped?

– Do you know others who are challenging the orthodoxy?

– What would it look like if you did things differently?

Choose the card with the orthodoxy that is most interesting to you:

– Why did you choose it?

– What would it look like if you flipped it?

“Play” the card at the center of the table & explain why you chose it.

Choose/vote on the one orthodoxy that the table finds most interesting.

On the card, write one sentence about why your table chose it.

Please give your chosen card to one of our team members at the end.
