Four year old Sumana Mandi had just learnt to write her name. OnFebruary 17, 2009, she was listening to fairy tales told by her motherJharna Mandi. The ‘liberators’ and ‘ushers of change’ came and pouredkerosene on them setting the mother and child on fire. Sumana andJharna were burnt alive. Their only crime was that they are the familymembers of Loncho Mandi, a CPI(M) worker.

Karamchand Singh was the headmaster in a primary school atSimulpal in a heavily forested area of Belpahari in Paschim Medinipur.A noted chhau-dance performer, he was dragged by the ‘liberators’ fromhis chair, shot, and his head was smashed with a stone in front of hisstudents on February 22, 2008.

He was taught the lesson. So were his students, all 6 - 10 years old.

Ramkrishna Duley, 52,was a peasant inBankura. On August15, 2009 was returninghome from his field inthe afternoon when twomen cycled up to him ona dirt road and openedfire. Duley was killed500 metres from hishome in Sarenga.

Perhaps his punishment was not enough. Ranjit Duley, on March 5,2009, Ramkrishna’s brother and the headmaster of local ShibramSatpathy School was abducted from the school compound by PCPAactivists in front of his students. He was released after five days.Ranjit and Ramkrishna’r crime – Supporting CPI(M).

Dead bodies of tribalvillagers butchered andkept in open for 5 dayswithout allowing disposalin June 2009. Theirrelatives were not allowedto come near or touch thebodies. The Maoists andTMC workers danced andsang around the bodies.

No condemnation, no disapproval were heard when one after another CPI(M)office were burnt, ransacked by TMC supporters in Purbo Medinipur.Thousands fled. As media and the civil society remained mute spectators tothe hooliganism, TMC MP Subhendu Adhikary, the comander of the violencedeclared, “We will not allow Red flag in Purbo Medinipur”.

‘Winds of Change’?

• Since January 2009, over 300 CPI(M) supporters were killed.• Among them were teachers, students, children, women.• Most of them are tribal, followed by minorities.• All of them belong to the weaker section.
