• An infection which comes from a bite of an infected mosquito.
• It comes from the mosquitoes that have fed on infected birds
What the West Nile Virus?
When did this begin?
• West Nile Virus started in Africa in 1937.
• The first case of the West Nile Virus that came to the United States was in August 1999.
• The disease mostly occurs during warm and humid weather.
Symptoms• Most people infected
with the virus have no symptoms.
• About 20 percent of people acquire a mild infection called the West Nile fever.
• And less than 1 percent of those infected get serious infection.
Fact!• Most West Nile virus infections
occur during warm weather, when mosquito populations are active.
• The signs and symptoms of the illness ranges from 3 to 14 days
How is it transmitted?• This virus is
transmitted to humans or animals by a infected mosquito.
• You will NOT get the virus just by touching someone who has it.

Where is this most common?• West Nile virus is most common
in areas such as Africa, parts of Asia and the Middle East.
• It is also common in these six states-Texas, South Dakota, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Michigan.
• Over 45% of the cases have been reported ONLY from Texas.

Who is fighting the virus?
• There have been over 30,000 cases since 1999.
• As of September 4 ,2012 there have been a total of 1,993 cases.
• So far 87 deaths have
been reported.
How to prevent this from happening to you?
• Here are some ways to prevent it:
• Eliminate standing water • Empty unused swimming
pools• Apply mosquito repellent
with DEET to your skin and clothing.
• These are just some ways to prevent it.

Is there a vaccine?
• Most people recover from West Nile virus without treatment.
• Taking some pain relievers may ease headaches and muscles. Pain Relievers
