Regional swim meet held in Grand Forks
The Grand Forks Piranhas swim club played ungracious hosts as they hand-ily won their own re-gional meet this past weekend.
The meet, which took place at the Grand Forks Aquatic Centre, featured swim-mers from the Castle-gar Aquanauts, Trail Stingrays, Nelson Nep-tunes, Colville Sharks, Creston Wave, and the host Piranhas.
The meet was con-sidered a “B” meet, which meant that only swimmers who have not yet met a certain time standard were able to compete.
For the Castlegar Aquanauts, who fin-ished second, it was the second meet of the season and coaches Nick Welychko and
Michaella Yang were very pleased with ev-eryone’s performance.
“Almost all of our swimmers achieved new best times in the four events that swim-mers could compete in,” said Welychko. “This is a great feeling from a coach’s perspec-tive because it means all of the swimmers’ hard work is paying off for them already.”
Castlegar swim-mers posted a total of 54 best times in just a single day of swim-ming with 18 swim-mers participating.
“The Grand Forks meet was a huge suc-cess for all the swim-mers,” said Yang. “Nick and I are looking for-ward to the rest of the season with all of the improvements that are being made so early on in the season.”
The local Piranhas had some great results
as well will 40 swim-mers competing.
Coach Robyn Van Ek said the swimmers did very well, getting 57 personal best times.
“We had a great turnout this weekend,” she said. “Almost every swimmer who was eli-gible to compete did so. Although the ‘A’ swim-mers couldn’t race this weekend, they were at the pool volunteering and cheering on their teammates.”
One of the top
Grand Forks swim-mers was Robbie Wark, who took 5.13 seconds off the divi-sion 1 boys 50M but-terfly and established a new meet record of 56.74 seconds.
Also excelling was Faith Thompson who picked up ‘Swimmer of the Meet’ for the Pira-nhas. She established impressive times in the 50M butterfly, 50M freestyle, 100M backstroke and 100M breast stroke.
The Aquanauts will be competing in Trail next weekend (June 14/15).
Team Rankings: 1st: Grand Forks Piranhas (474 points)2nd: Castlegar Aquanauts (325 points)3rd: Nelson Neptunes (258 points)4th: Trail Stingrays (238 points)5th: Colville Sharks (75 points)6th: Creston Wave (66 points)

New blood is the slogan Trail trustee Mark Wilson will be carrying into the up-coming election this fall.
Although residents won’t be heading to the polls until No-vember, those look-ing to secure a seat on School District 20’s board of trustees may be thinking about whether they’ll bid for a term now.
“One thing we need is change and change sparks new ideas,” said Wilson, who’s served for two three-year terms. “With a couple new trustees that we got on board at the last election, we have had some good changes.
We’re starting to look at the whole area, in-stead of just our little political areas.”
Wilson has advo-cated for a reduc-tion in the number of trustees who sit on the board and a maximum of three consecutive terms of service for some time now.
Trustees in the Nanaimo-Ladysmith and North Okanagan-Shuswap school dis-tricts are reviewing the number of elected o cials at this time. But SD20 board chair Darrel Ganzert said by this point it’s too late to host a public consulta-tion process required to examine the board’s current structure of nine wards within the district. e reduction to seven would likely
save about $30,000, he said, which the board felt wasn’t worth the loss of extra voices.
e thought of moving away from a ward system, the sub-divided system cur-rently in place, to an open or partial ward/open system had some trustees worried about the redistribution of seats. Currently, each ward is divided based on population with representation across the entire district but an open system would do away with borders and o cials would be elected at large.
Wilson said with all the cuts coming down on the district – most notably last year when SD20 decided to sell MacLean Elementary School and amalgam-
ate Twin Rivers and Castlegar elementary schools to save the district nearly half of a $750,000 shortfall – it’s only fair to do away with the current struc-ture.
“If we’re going to make cuts, we have to do it to ourselves too,” he said.
e last election held in 2011 resulted in four new mem-bers to the board: Jen Carter, Jo-Ann Bursey, Kim Mandoli and Darrel Ganzert, who acts as chair. It also brought back long-time trustees Mickey Kinakin, who’s served for 26 years, and Lor-raine Manning, who is the longest-serving trustee in SD20 re-cords with 30 years under her belt.
ough some may argue years of dedi-cation brings experi-ence, Wilson said at some point represen-tatives become com-placent.
He feels long-stand-ing members have to step down to make room for new candi-dates, who come with fresh energy and no political agenda.
“It’s like what we have in local politics, we have people who have been there for 30 years – come on give your head a shake,” he said. “You lose your value a er so many years.”
Residents will be casting their votes on a newly reformed four-year cycle when they head to the polls in November.

Do you want to become a Citizen Sci-entist contributing valuable data towards conservation of bats in BC? The Koote-nay Community Bat Project (KCBP) is seeking volunteers for the Annual Bat Count. This citizen-science initiative en-courages residents to count bats at roost sites to provide valu-able information on bat populations.
“This event is a wonderful opportu-nity for residents who care about wildlife to be involved in col-lecting important sci-entific information” says Juliet Craig, Co-ordinating Biologist for the KCBP. “You don’t need any spe-cial skills and kids can be involved.”
The Annual Bat Count is being pro-moted by the Koo-tenay Community Bat Project in part-nership with the BC Ministry of Environ-ment to collect base-line data on bat pop-ulations before the devastating White Nose Syndrome en-ters the province.
“White Nose Syn-drome is decimating bat populations in eastern North Amer-ica” says Purnima Govindarajulu with the Ministry of En-vironment. “We are lucky that this disease is not yet in BC but it is predicted to ar-rive here within ten years. Monitoring bat populations is es-sential for detecting sudden declines as-sociated with White Nose Syndrome caus-ing mortality.”
Residents wait out-side a known roost site, such as a bat-house, barn, bridge or attic, and count bats as they fly out at twilight. They can video the emergence or use a hand tally counter to count the bats. They record the final count along with some basic in-formation on weather conditions. Ideally, two counts are done between June 1 and 21 before pups are born, and two more between July 21 and August 15 when pups are flying with their mothers.
“We know relative-ly little about bats in this region including basic information on
population numbers” says Craig. “This in-formation will be extremely valuable, particularly if it is collected annually. If people want to get in-volved but don’t have a roost site on their property, we do our best to match them to a roost site nearby.”

Youth centre employment program funding delayed
Will JohnsonWest Kootenay Advertiser
Manager Christine Schmidt is heartbro-ken that a local youth employment program at the Nelson & Dis-trict Youth Centre won’t be able to run as planned this year.
For the past three years the centre has been “fortunate enough” to receive consecutive one-year contracts from Skills Canada to run their Skills Link program, she said. They sent their most recent ap-plication in October
Some service
providers in BC have had their
applications sitting since July 2013
2013, but they’ve yet to hear back.
“This is where it gets interesting,” said Schmidt. “We haven’t been told it’s been turned down. We’re not denied, not re-fused, we’re just sit-ting here waiting.”
Schmidt says this leaves “a ginormous hole” in their plans, and already their two facilitators Nicole Arbour and Sharlot Philip have moved on to other employment.
“They got snatched up right away,” she said. “They couldn’t sit around waiting.”
Even if Skills Can-ada were to get back to her right away, the program would not be able to run until after the busy tourist season this summer.
During the 2013-2014 program, Skills Link put 31 youth be-tween the ages of 15 and 30 through their program. Twenty-seven graduated and 25 received jobs in Nelson at places such as Positive Apparel and Baker Street Grill.
“The coolest thing is it pays minimum wage, 30 hours a week, for those 15 weeks,” said Schmidt, who said this pro-gram helps create “sustainable employ-ment in the commu-nity.”
Often employers offered additional training or a top-up wage to make the opportunity even better for the youth involved. The hope was that the employ-ers would keep par-
ticipants on after the program ended.
“The contract last year was for $308,000, 60 per cent of which went back into the pockets of the partici-pants,” she said.
Schmidt said she’s heard from disap-pointed local employ-ers who were expect-ing to hire through the Skills Link pro-gram again in 2014.
“What the delay in this program has done is impacted the ability for youth to compete in this labour mar-ket,” said Schmidt. “This is a huge disser-vice to youth, because they can’t rely on any-thing.”
Schmidt said other service providers in BC have had their applications sitting since July 2013, so she isn’t optimistic about their prospects.
“What are we set-ting these youth up for?” she asked.

Safety Tip:This early summer weather means more cyclists on the road, so as a driver shoulder checking is very important – especially when making right hand turns at intersections, before pulling
away from a curb and before you open your vehicle door.
Question of the WeekGrad season is upon us and parents brace for the seemingly inevitable headlines about youngsters dying in drunk driving crashes. Would you support an initiative to ban young drivers from getting behind the wheel when attending grad celebrations?

Subaru has a longer Legacy than most know…Lafayette, Indiana – The Subaru Legacy could be consid-ered the wallflower of the midsize sedan pack.Front-runners like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Chrysler 200 and Mazda6 constantly battle it out for their share of the limelight. All while this humble four-door sits on the sideline. In fact, some people don’t even know it’s in the game! According to the Japanese brand’s market research, many of those surveyed in major Canadian cities didn’t even know they had such a car available. Well, they do. And it’s great. For those not familiar with the Legacy, here are a few key points:It’s now in its sixth generation – yes, sixth – and has been around since 1989. It is 25 years young and looks nice for its age.The 2015 model comes with the option of two engines: a 2.5L, 4-cylinder (175 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque) and a 3.6L, 6-cylinder (256 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque.)What’s great about the 4-cylinder, Subaru offers it with a 6-speed manual. Our friends to the south don’t have access to such awesomeness. But on the flip side, it’s only available on the base model.Aside from the 6-speed manual, Subaru offers their version of a Continuously Variable Transmission, aka the Lineartronic CVT.While some might not be a fan of this type of trans-mission, don’t knock it until you try it. Subaru does an excellent job with the gear simulations and I didn’t feel the drone of the system under hard acceleration, even with the 4-cylinder. While I’d pick a manual any day, the CVT is darn good.So is the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system, a stan-dard feature on all Legacy trims. It came in handy in the backcountry roads of rural Indiana. Freak thunderstorm with torrential downpour where you can’t see two metres in front of you? No problem! The windshield wipers were doing their darnedest to keep up with precipitation but the car re-
mained calm, collected, and stayed on the straight and narrow, even in the ultra low traction environment. For the times when it wasn’t pouring cats and dogs, taking the twisty turns was quite a lot of fun. Despite
its electric power steering – a steering type that can be done either really well or not at all – there’s a good weight to it. It’s not lazy or sleepy at highway speeds, but won’t give you an arm workout if you need to change lanes. It’s not jerky either. Moving the wheel in either direction won’t make the vehicle suddenly jump aggressively. Think of it like Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The
steering isn’t too hard, or too soft. It’s just right. As for the ride and handling, the imperfections of the road aren’t met with abrasion or hesitance. The undulating country roads were a great testing ground, especially with all the debris. But even with a fair share of highway cruising, I have no qualms with the setup.Inside the cabin, you’ll be welcomed by Japanese
hospitality. A modern infotainment system, an unclut-tered cabin, and soft seats make a day’s drive quite favourable. While the Legacy might not be at the forefront of consumers’ minds, Subaru is a renowned brand. And it’s renowned for its reliability and safety. This generation of product should be any different. On some models, you have the ability to outfit it when EyeSight, a system that includes pre-collision braking, pre-collision brake assist, pre-collision throttle management, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane sway warning, and lead vehicle start alert. The 2015 Subaru Legacy, with the manual transmission Subaru’s Symmetrical full-time All-Wheel Drive starts at impressive MSRP of $23,495. Shoot all the way to the top, and you’ll get the 3.6 Limited trim with Technol-ogy Package Option for $35,395. Of course, there are offerings in between. As for its wallflower status, I think it has the goods and confidence to play ball with the rest of the pack.

Off-roading is a popular pas-time but it is amazing how many people arrive in the backwoods ill prepared for what should be a fun adven-ture.Here are a few tips on off-road driving; If you are driving in rocky ter-rain it is important to have sufficient ground clearance and proper suspension travel. High ground clearance allows the larger rocks to pass un-derneath without contacting vulnerable vehicle compo-
nents while good suspension travel allows the wheels to remain in contact with the
ground.Independent suspension usu-ally provides a smoother ride
in this type of road, but its design limits the wheel travel and ground clearance avail-
able. Rocky terrain should be traveled at low speeds to minimize vehicle contact with the terrain. While independent front sus-pension generally provides a smoother ride, it has a vari-able ground clearance to the front differential. As the front wheels hit a bump, the wheels rise up to absorb the bump. However the differential re-mains in the same position, reducing the ground clear-ance under it. This can result in the differential hitting the ground, even though the ob-ject was only half the height
of the ground clearance.Live axle front suspension does not provide as smooth a ride as independent front suspension. Many live axle suspensions are now fitted with coils rather than leaf suspension, which improves the ride. The advantage of live axles when off road is that when the wheels hit a bump, the whole axle rises with the wheels to absorb the bump. This maintains the same clearance from the dif-ferential to the ground. While this is an advantage off-road, the weight of the entire axle
is constantly moving with any bumps leads to a rougher ride, compared to indepen-dent front suspension. When large drop-offs or ledg-es are encountered, they can be done at an angle to allow one wheel at a time to drop down. Keep in mind how this will affect the position of the vehicle as turning at an angle to a downhill ledge may result in a side rollover.Travelling on long sections of gravel roads can lull the driver into a false sense of security.

‘‘ If an obstacle such as a bear suddenly appears it is very important not to swerve while braking, once a skid or slide starts, it is very difficult to regain control.’’Ian Harwood
Most four-wheel drives can make a rough road seem smooth with their smooth suspension and quiet inte-riors. Speed creep can occur in these circumstances and when a curve in the road is encountered the high cen-ter of gravity in most trucks may cause you to cross to the other side of the road or it can lead to a high risk of rollover. New drivers should be extra careful. If an obstacle such as a bear suddenly appears it is very important not to swerve while braking, once a skid or slide starts, it is very diffi cult to re-

gain control. It is best to use four-wheel drive on gravel roads to gain better traction. Gravel roads provide enough slip not to cause any transfer case windup problems. After driving long distances on poor quality roads, it is a good idea to check all nuts and bolts to see they haven’t vibrated loose. It is especially important to check all suspen-sion components. When driving on dusty roads, it is a good idea to have all your windows closed and the ventilation control set to out-side air with the fan on high. This pressurizes the cab of the
vehicle, and helps reduce the amount of dust sucked into the vehicle. When another vehicle approaches, move the ventilation control to re-circu-late to stop dusty air coming in. Remember to move the ventilation back to outside air once you have passed or else the pressurization effect will be gone. The interior is already experiencing some very dry conditions and with predictions of a serious fi re season ahead please do your part not to be carless and report any fi re to 1-800-663-5555 or *5555.ian.harwood@drivewaybc.ca
Drives-U-Crazy . . . I watched a left turning driver hit the horn (just once) to urge the driver ahead to move into the intersection. The woman just shook her head and stayed put but when the light turned red, she took off! – What logic was she using to fi gure – wrongly – that it was unlawful to enter the intersection yet legal to enter and turn on the red? What drives-u-crazy?

Our classic and collector car expert continues to-day with the final part of his four-part series on the restoration of public relations execu-tive Laura Ballance’s rare 1967 Ford Mustang T5 by 360 Fabrication in Abbotsford. The restoration story of Laura Ballance’s Mustang T5 has been an interesting to follow and one that is not typical of this kind of project. Before I get carried away tell-ing you what a T5 actually
is, I have to report that with the help of the team at 360 Fabrication, suppliers White and Peters, BASF paint and the 200 plus hours of paint preparation, application, wet sanding and polishing by master painter Darren Em-merson, the car is finished! And here is the best part, it’s on time and under budget, al-most unheard of in days gone by let alone today. So what is so special about a T5 Mustang? – The Ford Mus-tang could not be sold in Ger-many as a Mustang because a truck manufacturer there and later a motorcycle manu-
facturer owned the trade-marked name Mustang. Both manufacturers offered to sell the rights to Ford for $10,000
each but Ford declined and decided the solution would be to use the initial Mustang project name T5 as the solu-
tion. With all of the changes required, they should have probably paid the $10,000. With there being so many U.S.
armed forces bases in Germa-ny, export models were highly sought after. Laura had no idea how rare her car was until she decided to embark on this project and began doing her research. The T5 registry has informed Laura that of the 453 Mus-tang Hardtop T5s built in 1967, hers is one of the few examples ordered with a vi-nyl roof, which is listed as an option in the V.I.N tag. There are only two T5s known to exist in Canada, hers and one in Ontario and only 45 have survived in various states of condition worldwide. It is going to be a busy sum-mer for Laura, her two daugh-ters and the Mustang. I sus-pect her father, never in his wildest dreams would have thought the car would end up as a show car let alone be-come a family affair involving three generations of his fam-ily. The T5 will debut at the Vancouver Classic Car Show and Auction at the PNE on June 21 and 22. A picture of it at it’s gleaming best in next week’s Driveway preview of that show. Then it will head south in July to the Mustang Roundup in Bellevue, Wash-ington, the world’s largest Mustang meet. The car is en-tered in the Concours restora-tion class and should place well. Because this is the 50th an-niversary of the Mustang the invitations are pouring in, the most recent one from an event in North Carolina, Laura
still has a day job so unfortu-nately will miss that one. She will finish the summer off at the Luxury SuperCar weekend at VanDusen Gardens in Sep-tember. The car will be viewed at least 30 or 31 times in a month, gracing the walls of garages and repair shops all over North America featured in a 2015 Ford calendar. This concludes a restoration proj-ect with a happy conclusion.

A15West Kootenay Advertiser Thursday, June 12, 2014
Today, we conclude our look at so-called Curb-ers: con artists dedicated to separating you from your hard-earned cash by selling you a vehicle that is not all it seems to be. Bringing a curber conman to justice can cost tens of thou-sands of dollars. While penalties can be high, many successful prosecutions may yield a fine of just a few hundred dollars. One case cur-rently before the courts is five days into a trial over a $288 ticket. The costs to date of
further action against the of-fender are now approaching $80,000. At first sight, one might think it appropriate to save public cash but the problem is allow-ing a dismissal to occur sets a dangerous precedent that could harm future prosecu-tions.Because the matter is still be-fore the court, the accused’s name is withheld but the cir-cumstances can be revealed because they are instructive. The Surrey man has under-gone continuous legal action by the VSA (in partnership with the City of Surrey). The
Provincial Court found him guilty on three charges of curbing. He continued to curb so the VSA obtained an in-junction from the BC Supreme Court. That did not deter him so the VSA applied to the BC Supreme Court to find him in contempt of court. If success-ful the man will face a fine of $10,000 if found curbing again. This form of con clearly can be very profitable, if the perpe-trators figure fines and legal expenditures are merely the cost of doing business. How-ever, the following cases illus-trates typical curber practices
and the penalties they could face. One prolific curber was con-victed with 31 counts of fraud. He was buying vehicles wholesale from licensed deal-ers and selling them to the public. He rolled back more than two million kilometres. He was fined $31,000, two ve-hicles were seized from him, and he was put on probation for three years. A curber from Williams Lake claimed he sold cars as a hobby. After several tickets and warnings from the VSA, Crown Counsel issued court charges against him. After
pleading guilty, he was fined $2,000. The legislation allows for a maximum fine of up to $100,000 for individuals and $200,000 for corporations.A Delta man was convicted of fraud – 15 charges with evi-dence of odometer tampering, inaccurate vehicle histories, sales tax violations and other deliberately deceptive practic-es. Crown Prosecutor said he targeted the most vulnerable consumers, such as recent immigrants who had poor English. There was deliber-ate planning to perpetrate each fraud – finding a low priced vehicle, rolling back
the odometer, detailing to im-prove the appearance of the vehicle, creating a false histo-ry, finding a suitable “victim,” forging official documents and tax fraud. This occurred on more than one occasion. As the buyers were “complic-it” in the fraud, there was no consumer restitution for 12 of the 15 counts. They agreed to false documentation to save on taxes – a common practice used by curbers. This makes consumers fearful to go to authorities when something goes awry.He received a one-year con-ditional sentence (effectively
house arrest, except for medi-cal emergencies or to work, with the terms easing as the year progresses). He also agreed to perform 100 hours of community service.I’m indebted to the Vehicle Sales Authority of BC for pro-viding the research necessary for produce last week’s typi-cal curber profile story and today’s account of real scams. Please, if you don’t want to buy from an established deal-ership, do your due diligence as to the registration and con-dition of the vehicle you plan to buy.keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

For as long as Alexandra Straub recalls, she has loved cars. She can even remember thinking at the age of six, “Only ten more years until I can get my licence!”Born in Zurich, Switzerland to Hungarian parents, she moved to Canada when she was just a baby.Spending her summers in Budapest with her grandparents helped cultivate a strong liking for motorsports. Alexandra can remember watching F1 races with her grandfather, and still does even when she goes to visit.Over a decade ago, Alexandra started her career in the automotive industry. Since then, she has had countless stories and photos published. You can fi nd her work online, in newspapers, magazines and on television. She has hosted “Shifting Gears Automotive TV” and regularly makes appearances on various shows talking about, you guessed it, all things automotive. When she’s not testing out the latest in vehicular goodness, you’ll either fi nd her on a motorcycle (she tests and writes about those, too), on a track or traveling the world. While she considers her “job” her hobby, Alexandra enjoys other activities that don’t necessarily involve wheels, engines or motors. Growing up on the North Shore of Vancouver, she loves the mountains and the ocean. An avid snowboarder and a wannabe surfer, count on her enjoying the outdoors when she has the chance. And to really help her relax, she scrapbooks.Share your thoughts and requests with Alexandra atalexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca
Alexandra Straub
drivewayBC.ca.
For as long as Alexandra Straub recalls, I’ve been writing about cars for over 25 years and I’m a long-term member of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). My auto background is mainly in the service side of the industry as I’ve always had a keen interest in knowing how things work. Especially those oily, greasy parts that make the wheels go around. My fi rst car was an early sixties Triumph Herald Coupe (web example photo) that was traded-in to a dealership where I worked as an apprentice auto mechanic, back in Dublin, Ireland. It spent more time off the road, being repaired, than on the road, during my time as its owner. A Herald had the same chassis and a similar powertrain as the much nicer looking Triumph Spitfi re, which was sold in North America. At the BC Automobile Association I initially worked as a mobile Vehicle Inspector in the Vehicle Inspection Service. The vehicle was an AMC Gremlin and it was painted to look like a cut-away or skeleton view of the car’s mechanical bits. A small car with a big gas-guzzling engine, a Gremlin was an odd choice of vehicle for that job and the paint job just added to its weirdness, yet I grew to like it. Currently I enjoy serving on the AJAC Technology Awards panel and have also been involved in the promotion of trade skills training for young people in BC. When time permits, I still like to get my hands dirty and give my son a helping hand with, his pride and joy, a 1966 Ford Thunderbird coupe.bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

AAA The Ford Escape is a founder member and a top-seller in the hot-selling com-pact utility club.It came with a new-look exterior, an interior make-over and improved safety features for the 2008 model year, all included a complete second-generation redesign. Although it doesn’t look too much different from its pre-decessor, the ’08 Escape has a wider stance and a slightly higher belt line than its pre-decessor and there are no carry-over body panels. A
domed hood, bigger grille and new headlamps also give this Escape a slightly more aggressive look and it has better off-road attri-butes in terms of approach, break-over and departure angle capabilities. A base front-drive Escape XLS is powered by a 2.3-li-tre engine. Moving up a step, the XLT trim allowed a 3.0-litre V6 option and a tow package that bumped trailer-hauling capability to 1,588 kg (3500 lb). The top-line Limited came with leather, dual climate control air conditioning and Audio-
phile sound system, more power features, and the V6 engine. Four-wheel-drive was an option with every trim level. If an urban commute is your vehicles primary job and good fuel economy is important there’s also a hy-brid version of the Escape. It has a smoother and quieter powertrain than the fi rst generation Escape Hybrid, introduced in 2003, and its city-driven fuel economy rating is an ultra-frugal 5.7 L/100 km. It was also avail-able in both front-drive and four-wheel-drive.
While stability control was standard on all gas-engine versions of the ’08 Escape, it wasn’t available on the Hybrid. Same story for a re-lated new safety feature on the ’08, called Roll Stability Control (RSC). Particularly useful on taller vehicles, the RSC system automatically responds when a potential rollover is detected, by se-lectively applying brakes and/or decreasing the en-gine torque. Both of these important active safety features were made stan-dard on the ‘09 and newer Escape Hybrid.

The ’09 model year also brought big changes un-der-hood. A new 2.5-litre 4-cylinder engine, a modi-fied version of the 3.0-litre V6, two new transmissions and the hybrid got an even more refined drivetrain with an Atkinson cycle gasoline engine. The new five-speed manual transmission, in combination with the 4-cylinder engine, was only available in Escape models sold in Canada. The Escape Hybrid is a full hybrid and capable of run-ning purely on electric pow-er up to about 40 km/hour. It also uses a continuously
variable transmission (CVT). Although it doesn’t func-tion with a conventional gear set, it still offers a low-range setting for challeng-ing terrain. The 2010 model year brought trim upgrades to Escape and all models got standard Blind Spot Mirrors. A top-line Limited trim was added to Escape Hybrid of-ferings and an Auto Park System, which automati-cally steers the Escape into a parallel parking spot, was a new option.Ford Escape was essentially unchanged for 2011 and 2012, other than some new exterior colours and option packages. The 2012 model was the final year of this
generation Ford Escape. The Escape’s reliability is generally rated average to better than average and re-pair costs are generally low-er-than-average, according to Consumer Reports. The Hybrid edition typically rates a little better. Resale prices are reasonable and there’s typically a good supply of used Ford Escape models out there. You can expect to pay an additional $2,000 to $4,000 for a Hy-brid model. Price Check: 2008 - 2012 Ford Escape (June 2014)Year Edition Expect to Pay Today2008 XLT 4X4 $10,000 to $13,000

A complete mechani-cal check should always be performed by a reliable auto technician prior to pur-chase. Safety Recalls: 2008 to 2012 Ford Escape:2008/ 2009/ 2010/ 2011/ 2012: A fault in the Electric Power Steering (EPS) system could result in a sudden loss of power steer-
ing assist, without warning to the driver. This would significantly increase the effort required by a driver to steer at lower vehicle speeds. Dealers will affect repairs as necessary and re-program the EPS controller with updated software. 2010: The automatic trans-mission’s park rod guide retention pin may not have been properly installed. This may prevent the trans-mission park pawl from engaging when shifted into “PARK” and allow vehicle movement. Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, install the missing park rod guide retention pin.bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

Warm weather is on the horizon, and people from all over are preparing their vehicles for another season of road trips. In addition to packing the interior cargo areas full of equipment and luggage, many road-trippers also haul gear and recreational accessories with them. There’s more to towing than hitching a trailer and hitting the open road. A number of factors come into play when towing cargo or an-other vehicle, including the towing capacity of the ve-hicle doing the hauling. The
following are some safety tips for road trippers hitting the road with trailer in tow.Tow vehiclesWhile many vehicles have towing capabilities, not all of those vehicles are neces-sarily right for the job. Re-view the towing capacities of various vehicles depend-ing on the type of trailer that will be towed. A larger, more powerful vehicle may be necessary if you will be towing something large and heavy, such as a boat or a recreational vehicle. You may need more horse-power to maintain a safe
driving speed when towing especially heavy cargo.EquipmentDifferent manufacturers offer towing packages equipped to work in concert with your vehicle. Towing packages may include cer-tain types of hitches, batter-ies, flasher systems, extend-ed-view side mirrors, and even special axles and tires. In many areas, a trailer with a loaded weight of more than 1,500 pounds requires a separate braking system and a breakaway switch located on the tongue of the trailer that activates the
trailer brakes in the event it separates from the tow vehicle. Having the right equipment can mean the difference between safely towing cargo and getting in an accident.AbilityHaving a lot of power and the right equipment is not enough to safely tow cargo. Recklessness on the road, which includes driving over the speed limit, is a recipe for an accident. It typically takes time and some prac-tice for drivers to grow ac-customed to driving while towing cargo. Driving while
towing cargo requires that drivers maneuver their ve-hicles differently than they would in more typical con-ditions, and that they drive at slower speeds while leaving room for a larger turning radius. In addition, drivers must accommodate for the extra weight when braking.Vehicle checkVerifying that the trailer hitch is secure is not the only inspection drivers must conduct before hit-ting the open road. The vehicle doing the towing should be serviced, and any
repairs should be made. Check fluid levels, particu-larly the transmission fluid. In addition, make sure the water level in the battery is acceptable and have the motor oil changed if it is nearing its mileage limit. It’s also a good idea to re-place the air filter, examine the tires for adequate tread and test the brakes.
When the trip begins, give your vehicle and the hitch a once-over to double-check that everything is in work-ing order. This can be done during service station stops along the trip.Spring is a season of recre-ational fun and long road trips, but it pays to play it safe when towing gear and other cargo.

ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)You may be experiencing some second thoughts about plans made a while back. There may be un nished business and/or a few unanticipated situations to tend to before you proceed. Establishing a reliable foundation rst is one consideration. Another includes affordability and deciphering what constitutes your best investment.
TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21)If anyone’s life has been extra busy over the past couple of years, it has likely been yours. And the pace will continue for a while yet. In fact it stands to accelerate over the next few weeks. As though in the nal minutes of an important sport event, a feeling of urgency is pushing you to give it all you have. You will be able to slow down again soon.
GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21)Some new momentums have begun for you. These are linked to home and family, health and security. The need to establish a healthier rhythm, one that is more balanced and in accordance with where you are at in your life, is featured. Circumstances are pushing you to focus deliberately on it now. This trend will continue for several weeks.
CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)You are in the nal stretch of bringing things to completion in preparation for the new season. There are some big events in store for you over the coming weeks. At best this includes the foundations of new friendships. As well, new inspirations to concentrate upon your talents and hobbies are highlighted.
LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)This is a mixed time where you nd yourself making new connections yet also nd yourself busy behind the scenes rather than socializing. But that is about to change. Get ready for a noticeable increase in your social life. This should feel quite welcome, this week anyway. You may feel less inclined later so get it in now.
VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)Mercury Retrograde may be pitching you some curve balls and sliders, especially in your public and professional life. These are pushing you to both deepen your research and to develop new skills and approaches and perhaps obtain new tools, techniques or equipment. As well, you may feel the need to reveal certain expressions yet conceal others. Altogether, this is a complex time.
LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)A deepened search for a clearer sense of yourself and what you feel you truly want and need has begun. This will become increasingly apparent this week. You may feel at a loss about what to do. You may wish you had what others have, but what’s the use in such comparisons? On the other hand, it could prove useful to ask for guidance or at least emulate the successes of others.
SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)Circumstances are leading you to think deeply more and communicate casually less. Listening well to others and engaging in some strategic research and investigative work will prove bene cial. Seeing the beauty in others and allowing room for increased admiration and decreased competition will help you feel less isolated and more connected.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)Weighing your words more carefully where it really counts will prove important over the next while. This does not mean telling others what they want to hear. What is implied is a spirit of giving more and judging less. It is said silence is golden and listening more and especially tuning in to who others are and what they need, beyond suggestions, will prove invaluable.
CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)The time has come to make some needed improvements. This may be especially the case in your perceptions, beliefs and at-titudes. Not that they are wrong per se, but rather you stand to bene t from making a few adjustments to re ne them at this time. Take a constructively critical attitude for best results and avoid justifying human frailty, speci cally your own.
AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)Reconsidering what constitutes your best creative advantage is in the spotlight. Creating beauty in your home and living space is a likely bet. This may require that you assert your position to arrange things that suit you speci cally. Things stand to take off for you in the best sense in about a month, so now is the time to fortify your foundation.
PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)Balancing clear intentions to persevere as necessary with an equal need to exercise more exibility in your perspective, attitude and approach begins this week. This cycle will last up to six weeks, possibly even more. Aim to follow through with your plans yet weave in a strong element of willingness to listen and cooperate.

Horoscope for the Week June 12, 2014Horoscope for theTip of the Week: It is Friday the 13th and under the bright light of the Full Moon in Sagittarius the nal countdown to Summer Solstice has begun. It of course marks the of cial beginning of the summer season. Amidst the ever changing ow of styles, attitudes, beliefs, perceptions, approaches and so on it is comforting to know that some things remain consistent. While the same cannot exactly be said of the weather, it can be of the season.
It is quite a remarkable fact that the tilt of the Earth’s axis just so happens to be almost exactly ¼ of a perfectly vertical one which would be 90 degrees. The mid-points between the equator and the north and south poles are the ‘Tropics’ of Cancer and Capricorn. When the Earth is in its annual orbit here in the Northern Hemisphere, it is tilted most directly towards the Sun and it achieves its annual zenith or highest position in the sky.
It is this cycle which determines the speci c cast of the Sun’s light on the surface of the earth. It changes incrementally every day of the year. Beyond the simple facts of this annual progression, Astrology clearly demonstrates that there is a psychological component woven into it. Popular thinking these days asserts that all your psychology exists in your head. Yet the deeper truth is that our psychological ‘nature’ is a feature of an intricate web or relationships, and principle among these is our intrinsic individual and collective relationship with the Sun’s light.
