Subject-based Banding?

Why introduce

Subject-Based Banding

Key Messages:

• Allows us to better cater our curriculum for pupils

to ensure they stay engaged and are encouraged

to go as far as they can

• Allows pupils to take subjects at different levels,

depending on their proficiency and aptitude

Subject-Based Banding

Key Messages:

• Subjects at the Foundation level put focus on mastery of

core content and skills at a lower level, compared to

subjects at the Standard level.

• Pupils who offer a subject at Foundation level, would

have reduced chances of pursuing the Express course at

Secondary School.

• Reason: he/she would require substantial bridging

(different content/demand)

How does Subject-based Banding work?

At P4• School recommends a subject combination

based on P4 examination results. • Parents select preferred combination.• Pupil takes subject combination chosen

by parents at P5 the following year.

At P5• School assesses the pupil’s performance • School decides on the pupil’s subject

combination for pupil at P6

Information on PSLE

• Places students into different courses

according to their academic ability

• Enables posting to secondary schools by

merit and as far as possible into a school

of their choice

Express 4 years

(ITE)

SECONDARY ONE OPTION AND POSTING

SEC 1 POSTING EXERCISE

• All pupils who pass the PSLE are eligible to participate in the S1 Posting Exercise.

• This is with the exception of those who are successful in the DSA-Sec Exercise

• Introduced in 2004

• More flexible and broad-based education system

• Promote holistic education

• Greater flexibility in selecting students

• Based on schools’ selection criteria

2019 Centralised DSA-Sec

Application Portal

46

DSA-Sec Application Portal

• DSA-Sec provides students an opportunity to enrol in a school based on their talents, potential and achievements that cannot be demonstrated through the PSLE.

• To encourage students to tap on the expanded DSA opportunities, the DSA-Sec application process will be simplified

• From the 2019 DSA-Sec, students will be able to apply for DSA through a centralised DSA-Sec Application Portal, using a common application form.

• The portal will simplify and streamline the DSA application process, making it convenient for all students.

47

From 2019 onwards…

Simplify and streamline DSA-Sec application • Reduce application hassle for students – single online

application to multiple schools

• Encourage more students with talent / potential to consider DSA-Sec for talent development, to tap on expanded DSA opportunities

48

Changes• Information on P5/P6 results and CCA records taken

directly by the secondary schools from the MOE systems

• Removal of testimonials from online application

How students will indicate their choices

1. Each applicant can indicate up to three choices using the DSA-Sec Portal• For each choice, they will need to indicate a secondary school and a talent

area from that school

• Choice order does not matter.

• This encourages students and parents to consider their choices carefully and commit to them, which is what we have advised in previous DSA exercises.

2. Applicant can choose to apply to two different talent areas, under the same school• Of the three choices, a maximum of two choices can be used to apply to the

same school, for two different talent areas of that school.

• This is to cater to students’ multiple interests, and allow them to choose different schools which can develop their strengths and interests.

• Secondary schools have the prerogative to shortlist students for the stronger area

49

How students will indicate their choices

3. Options for dual-track IP schools• Where the dual-track school offers the same DSA-Sec talent area to both

tracks, the students will have the option of indicating preference for which track (IP or O-level) they are applying to, or indicating no preference.

Note. Students can apply separately to SOTA and/or SSP, on top of the three choices made using the DSA-Sec Portal.

50

Examples of Choice Combinations

51

A student can apply to up to three different schools, with no restrictions on the talent areas.

If a student choose two areas in one school, he/shecan apply to two different schools only.

A student cannot use all three choices on one school. He/she can leave the third choice blank or choose another school.

STUDY HARD

• No Short cuts

LEARN WELL

• Make use of different strategies

PARENTAL SUPPORT & INVOLVEMENT

CPS needs parents to help too …

• do not take children out of school during term time

unnecessarily

• not to constantly smoothen the pathway for your

children, but to allow them to fail and try again

• take a step back and think if we are really helping our

children...

We may have the best intentions. But we will need to constantly check if our pupils have gained the necessary experiences to know how to bounce back from failure, a tenacious attitude to overcome obstacles and succeed in life.

Last, but not least…
