What is IBM Installation Manager?

IBM Installation Manager is an installation management tool that offers a number of time-

saving features. It helps keep track of what you are about to install, as well as what you have

already installed, and what is available for installation. It searches for updates, so that you

know that you are installing the latest version of a package. Installation Manager also provides

tools for managing licenses for the packages that it installs, and for updating and modifying

packages. It can also uninstall full packages, or roll back packages to previous versions.

Until WebSphere v6.1, IBM used ISMP for installation of all products. This involves downloading

the required binaries, license and then install ling it. Some of the issues with this approach are,

it involves lengthy downloads depending on the product binary size and you need to do the

same for the future updates and fixes.

From WebSphere v7 onwards, IBM changed to Installation Manager for all the installations,

updates, fixes etc. Installation manager is focused and made for an end user role. It can be used

for install/uninstall/update/modify/rollback and for license management also.

Manager can download the product packages… click on Modify

13. Here, you can add/modify/remove the repositories. Click on Add Repository to add a new

location from your hard disk or online repositories like Passport Advantage etc..

14. In my case, I ‘ve already got WebSphere 8 Beta on my local hard disk. So I would like to add the

location of the binaries as a repository.

others in Red [disconnected], as we didn’t connected to the IBM download site.

18. Now lick OK and you will be taken back to the Installation Manager ‘install’ screen.

21. If you click ‘cancel’.. As you already imported WebSphere Application server in to the

installation manager or added WebSphere binaries location as the repository, the present

settings are saved and when you start the next time, these settings will be retrieved.

You can add multiple repositories from where the Installation Manager can get

the required product packages. You can also install multiple products at once. Use
