What is IBM Installation Manager?
IBM Installation Manager is an installation management tool that offers a number of time-
saving features. It helps keep track of what you are about to install, as well as what you have
already installed, and what is available for installation. It searches for updates, so that you
know that you are installing the latest version of a package. Installation Manager also provides
tools for managing licenses for the packages that it installs, and for updating and modifying
packages. It can also uninstall full packages, or roll back packages to previous versions.
Until WebSphere v6.1, IBM used ISMP for installation of all products. This involves downloading
the required binaries, license and then install ling it. Some of the issues with this approach are,
it involves lengthy downloads depending on the product binary size and you need to do the
same for the future updates and fixes.
From WebSphere v7 onwards, IBM changed to Installation Manager for all the installations,
updates, fixes etc. Installation manager is focused and made for an end user role. It can be used
for install/uninstall/update/modify/rollback and for license management also.
