Presenters

Jamie DuttonDCS Dimensional Applications Engineer

Jamie Dutton has been with DCS for over 6 years as part of the QDM Development Team. As a Dimensional Applications Engineer, Jamie is instrumental in the testing, development and installation of QDM Systems, as well as an integral part of DCS’s training team.

Oliver GladiasDCS Mechanical Applications Engineer

Oliver Gladias has been working with DCS since 2011 to develop and apply GDM and QDM applications to customer issues. As a Mechanical Applications Engineer, Oliver has been instrumental in testing and implementing new QDM systems.

Let’s Start with a Familiar Story

Paper Mountain-The result of receiving hundreds of pages of text reports from suppliers, all in different formats.

Imagine for a Second…

YOU

You’re the quality manager at a large OEM.

GD&T Drawing Sheet

You’ve created all the GD&T for the parts you need, with Datums and call outs.

Road Map

From the GD&T, you have developed a road map for inspecting the parts.

This is your measurement plan.

Suppliers Manufacture the Parts

Your suppliers make the parts.

How do they Measure? You have a lot of suppliers. They are here:

(Paid Actor Recreation)

CMM Measurement Plan

Some use your plan, but we all know most use their own.

Inspection Devices

Because of the nature of the parts, they are measured with a variety of devices

And….You Receive This.

Stacks of Measurement Files

It will take you a few days or weeks to comb the data, and compile it into a giant excel spreadsheet

Then You Get to Run Your Analysis

However, a lot of the data is no longer relevant, or worse, not even used.

And now you are stuck with trying to run statistical process control, with actionable results to be presented to your management.

It becomes difficult to catch possible issues, increasing the risk of warranty and liability, as well as making issues difficult to root cause.

How Does SQA Change the Process?

Imagine for a Second…

YOU

You again. Look familiar?

Road Map

From the GD&T, you have developed a road map for inspecting the parts.

This is your measurement plan.

However, now we take it a step farther.

Road Map

Your measurement plan is used to create a Template.

Suppliers Manufacture the Parts

How do they Measure?

Raw Data

But They Don’t Send the Raw Data

They upload the raw data and outputs into the template through QDM

All of the different formats, and data is standardized into the OEM Template you

created.

Image from the pres with color charts

The supplier then sends a report, with characteristics and measures automatically put through pass/fail criteria set in the original template.

This allows you to quickly see which parts are out of spec, and hone in on the problem areas.

They Send Back Your Populated Template

Visual format allows for easy pass/fail identification, and with all of the suppliers data in an easy to read layout, you can quickly see why the parts passed or failed.

This Allows You To Quickly Validate

Before and After QDM SQA

Suppliers all sending different formats

Quality Requirements unclear, often created by Suppliers

OEM’s looking for specific formats of inspection outputs

Suppliers often need to go back and re-measure parts to check OEM specified locations

Time consuming analysis and OEM specified pass/fail criteria based on statistics

Data and statistics need to be manually input into reports for decision making.

Must be manually stored and archived.

Standard Format for all Supplier Communication

Clear communication of quality requirements from OEM

Suppliers can use available inspection device/software

Suppliers can decide on inspection device routines to cover all requirements in first pass.

Pass/fail criteria embedded in the template – for instant data validation

Received report is in a decision making format.

Can be archived and published back to the OEMs QDM-WEB system directly.

QDM SQA (Supplier Quality Assurance Report)

The Quality Engineers receives a inspection report in EXACTLY the same format as requested in a DIRECT decision making / quality approval format

Benefits:

Quick & efficient quality reviews

Saves time and money

Enhanced Quality
