Email Vocabulary

1. Email - Electronic mail

2. Email provider - The company that hosts your email account

3. Email address - username@domain.com/org/edu

4. Contacts - A list of names and email addresses that you contact and store; can include phone numbers and other details (and can be synced with cell phone)

5. Username - First half of the email address; unique to each user

6. Domain - Second half of email address; based on website/provider

7. Email client - A software application that can be used to manage email accounts on and offline

8. Instant messaging (IM)/chat - Direct, real-time communication with an email contact

9. Drives/Cloud storage - Free file storage included as part of most email accounts

10. Compose - Create/write a new message

11. Send - To finalize and send your email to the included email addresses

12. Reply - Response to message that goes back to original sender

13. Reply all - Response to message that gets sent to all addresses in thread

14. Delete - Moves message to trash for 30-60 days

15. Attachment - File sent as part of email; can be document, spreadsheet, pictures, music, etc. - most emails attachments are limited in size

16. Formatting - Font types, sizes, bolds, italics, underlines that can be used to change appearance of message

17. To – This is where the recipients of an email go.

18. CC - Carbon copy; people that also receive the message but aren’t the primary recipient

19. BCC - Blind carbon copy; people that also receive the message but other recipients can’t see their address

20. Emoticons

21. Signature - Automatic text included at bottom with name, phone number, and whatever else you want!

22. Drafts - Messages that have been started and saved to be finished and sent later (not yet sent)

23. Spam - Junk mail that gets automatically filtered to a folder; be sure to check this as the filter isn’t always perfect

24. Trash - Deleted messages get sent to the trash, where they will remain for 30-60 days

25. Subject - The topic of the email. It should be short and concise.

Computer Vocabulary

1. Operating System- A computer program that manages hardware devices, communicates between hardware and applications, and manages files stored on the computer.

2. Hardware-the pieces of a computer that have a physical structure.

3. Google Drive-a free cloud-based storage service that enables users to store and access files online. The service syncs stored documents, photos and more across all of the user's devices, including mobile devices, tablets and PCs. It offers 15 GB of free storage.

4. Digital Identity- The collection of data about you that is available online.

5. Radio Button: an icon representing one of a set of options, only one of which can be selected at any time.

6. CURSOR: The line or arrow that you control by moving the mouse.

7. HIGHLIGHT/SELECTING: Click

and drag across a word or sentence to highlight it. When it is highlighted you can make changes to it.

8. DESKTOP: The screen you see first when your computer turns on. This screen has many icons.

9. DIALOGUE BOX: A window that opens and asks questions.

10. ICON: Symbols or pictures that you can click on to perform an action. Each program has its own icon.

11. MINIMIZE: To move a window to the bottom of the screen without closing the window.

12. MAXIMIZE: To expand a window to the full size of the screen.

13. RESTORE: To make a window smaller so that you can change the size or position.

14. PROGRAMS: Another word for software or applications.

15. APPLICATION: Another word for a program or software.

16. SOFTWARE: Another word for programs, instructions in the computer that help it do different tasks.

17. MICROSOFT WORD: A word-processing program for typing letters, resumes, school papers and more.

18. DOCUMENT: Anything you create in Microsoft Word is called a document.

19. WORD PROCESSING: Typing documents on a computer. Word processing also allows you to format, save, and edit your writing.

20. SPREADSHEET: Organizes information into rows and columns and often uses math and numbers.

21. MICROSOFT POWERPOINT: A software program for making slideshow presentations.

22. FILE: A piece of computer information such as a document or part of a computer program.

23. FOLDER: Like a file folder in a filing cabinet, a file is where documents (letters, spreadsheets, etc.) are kept.

24. SCROLL BARS: The bars on the sides of the screen that allow you to move up or down the page.

25. TASKBAR: The bottom bar that shows which programs are open; you can place the mouse over the icons to see multiple windows.
