Bell Work/BW #12:

This is a self-portrait of Frida Khalo with flowers. What stands out about her and what do Agenda: Attendance/Announcements/

Notes & Activity 1.6: Springboard pgs. 33-39

Pg. 38 fill in and look at the painting on pg. 37 (find your class-P5/6/8)

P5:

O: Why is the painting cut in half? Why does Mexico have brighter colors? How is Frida feeling? (at least three questions)

P: Why is the American Flag in smoke? Why do the sun and moon look negative? Why is there a dead person/skeleton? (at least three questions)

T: It suggests how different the two sides/cultures are to Frida. Frida is leaving her mark between the two with the pedestal “Carmen Rivera painted her portrait in 1932.”

I: She’s using neutral colors in her painting except for Frida’s pink dress. There are bolder colors at the bottom on

the Mexico and at the top of the US side.

C: Frida is torn between the Mexican and the US side but she definitely favors Mexico.

P6:O: Why is she in a

pink dress? Why are the sun and moon so negative? Why does she have gloves on? (at least 3 questions)

P: Why is the American flag covered in smoke/steam? Why did she put Ford Factory in her painting? Why did she choose those areas? Why is there a skeleton in the painting? (at least 3 questions)

T: Frida is on the border line between US & Mexico with the Mexican side getting

more attention in the painting.

I: The US side is shown to be very industrial and the Mexican side is more natural. Majority of the color is neutral, but Mexican side pops at the bottom with the flowers and the US side is vibrant with the US flag.

C: Frida has some love for the US but more

for Mexico. An allusion is made between her contrasting emotions/feelings for the two countries.

P8:O: Why is Frida so

much brighter than everything else? Why is she wearing pink? Why are US cords connecting to the plants on the Mexican side? What temple is in the

background on the Mexican side? (4 Questions)

P: Why is the figurine breastfeeding? Why does what the darker figure is holding look alien? Why are the walls crumbling or is it a mass grave? Why is Frida facing towards Mexico and her back to the US? (4 questions)

T: Frida is on the borderline between Mexico and the US. The Mexican side gets more space on the painting. Frida is leaving her mark behind.

I: The background is more neutral colors but there are bolder colors at the front on the Mexican side and the back on the US side with the flag. Frida in pink, stands

apart from both sides too.

C: Frida is drawn more to the native Mexico, her homeland but she’s caught between both worlds.

Frida Kahlo OPTIC project (use OPTIC pg. 38 to create the one for the Frida Kahlo painting you chose from https://www.fridakahlo.org/frida-kahlo-

paintings.jsp then add color to the picture to make it look like the original painting, use tape to join the two when finished)
