SaraAviel [HHS’98)wasontheMockTrialTeamandtheScrollstaff,ledJSA,andwasontheswimteam. Shewasalsohonoredwith theYoungWomanofExcellenceAwardgivenby theSanMateoWomen’sHallofFame.SarathenearnedherBAandMAinPoliticalScienceandherMBAfromYalewhilealectureroninternationaldevelopmentandhumanitarianrelief.DuringtheeightyearsoftheObamaadministration,SaraservedasSeniorAdvisortoSecretaryoftheTreasury,TimothyGeitner,whopraisedherasthe“progressiveconscienceoftheTreasury”-DirectorforInternationalEconomicAffairsfortheNationalSecurityCouncilandNationalEconomicCouncil -U.S.RepresentativetotheWorldBankGroup–andExecutiveAssociateDirectorandChiefofStaffattheOfficeofManagementandBudget.SheiscurrentlyamemberoftheadvisorycounciltotheAfricanWildlifeFoundation,theCouncilonForeignRelations,andtheAspenGlobalLeadershipNetwork.

MaureenBrady[HHS’91]wasa4-yearstartingpitcherfortheKnightsfrom1988-1991.ShepitchedtheKnightstoPALandCCSchampionshipsin1990and1991whilecompilinganincrediblerecordof116Winsand9Losses.Includedwere69shutouts,29nohitters,and14perfectgames,includingaperfect game towin the ’91CCS championshipgame. Shealsoplayed for theU.S. JuniorOlympicTeamwhileatHillsdale. At FresnoState,Maureen twice led theBulldogs to theWomen’sCollegeWorld Series, was honored as an All American, and was a member of the Western AthleticConferenceAllConferenceTeam.Her36winsand321inningspitchedinherjunioryear(1994)ledtheUS;shewasnamedFSU’sFemaleAthleteoftheYearinhersenioryear;andsheisamongFSU’sTop 10 Season/Career Pitching Leaders inmany categories. Maureen returned to HHS in 2009 tocoachKnightssoftballfor3years,andisaninducteetotheSMCountySportsHOF.

DukeCampagna[HHS1955-1978]livedwithacommitmenttointegrityandpurpose.Hegraduatedfrom SanMateo HS and San Jose State, and earned hisMaster’s degree inMusic Education fromStanford. He served in the Army inWW II and the KoreanWar. Dukewas onHillsdale’s originalteaching staff in 1955 and remained at Hillsdale until retirement in 1978. He established amusicprogramthatsetastandardforexcellencethatcontinuestothisday.Duke’simpactasaninnovatorandleaderofmusiceducationextendedbeyondHillsdale.HefoundedtheLaHondaMusicCampandSMRecSummerMusicProgram.In1960DukewasappointedastheSMUHSDMusicCoordinatorandalso servedasPresidentof theCaliforniaMusicEducators for theBaySectionandWesternStates’Division. Inaddition,Duke isrememberedasateacherandProgramCoordinatorfortheAmericanRedCrossSwimmingProgramfrom1952-1978.Dukepassedawayin2016attheageof95.Bill Hardwick [HHS ’59] was a multi-sport athlete at Hillsdale (basketball, baseball, track, crosscountry and tennis). He joined theProfessionalBowlersAssociation tour in 1961andamassed18PBAtitlesduringhiscareer. Billwasthefirstandoneofonlysix tocapturethePBAcareer“TripleCrown”achievedbywinningthethreeprimaryPBAmajortournaments.HewasnamedPBAPlayeroftheYearinboththe1963(youngestever)and1969(record7titles)seasons.Anotherstillstandingrecordisthescoreof2165foraneightgameblockheachievedin1968.In2008Billwasranked#12onthePBA’slistof50greatestbowlersofthelast50years.Billusedanunconventionalgrip(duetoaHHSshopaccident!)andwasknownas“TheMagician”forhisunusuallystraight,slow,FullRollerroll,andhispinpointaccuracy.Heretiredat34afterdevelopingarthritisandwasinductedintothePBAHallofFamein1977.Billpassedawayin2013.JayMathews[HHS‘63]servedasStudentBodyPresidentandChiefJusticeandwasamemberoftheKnights’ Tennis Team. He attended Harvard and Occidental Colleges and is a US Army Vietnamveteran.JayhasbeenahighlyrespectededucationcolumnistandbloggerfortheWashingtonPost,hisemployerfor40plusyears.Heistheauthorofsevenbooks,includingEscalante:TheBestTeacherinAmerica,ClassStruggle:What’sWrong(andRight)withAmerica’sBestPublicHighSchools,andhismostrecent,WorkHard.BeNice,aNYTimesbestsellerabouttheKIPPcharterschoolnetwork. HealsocreatedtheChallengeIndextoannuallyrank“America’sMostChallengingHighSchools.”JayhaswonseveralawardsforeducationwritingincludingtheUptonSinclairAwardas“abeaconoflightinthe realm of education”, the Benjamin Fine Award for Outstanding Education Reporting, and theEugeneMeyerAwardfordistinguishedservicetoTheWashingtonPost.

DavidYarnold[HHS’70]servedasHillsdale’sStudentBodyPresidentandEditoroftheScrollbeforeattending San Jose State University and graduating cum laude as the first photojournalismmajornominated to the Kappa Tau Alpha Journalism Honor Society.
