Academic Vocabulary Word of the Day

Paraphrase-

Who can define this word for us?Who can use this word in a sentence for us?

Objective:Students will be able to understand how the Iroquois League was formed.

We live in a country that is bound by different laws, and governing groups.

Why do you believe it is important to have a set or laws in place?

(turn and talk to have a discussion on the importance of laws and government)

Up until this point we have discussed numerous regions and the Native American Tribes that occupied those regions together. But for the most part these tribes lived separate from each other.

Today we will be examining the life of the Eastern Peoples, and this is where we we’ll first see a network of tribes come together to form a government

Eastern Peoples-Complex societies in the woodlands of eastern North America.

-Iroquois lived in our very own New York State!!

-Lived in bark-covered longhouses.

-Main source of food came from farming. They grew corn, squash, and other crops.

Eastern PeopleThe Iroquois Nation- These groups often warred with each other. Then in 1500’s they established the Great Peace, and alliance called the Iroquois League

*Friendship and peace

five different tribes that were originally apart of this nation Onondaga, Seneca, Mohawk, Oneida, and Cayuga

Eastern PeopleTogether they formed a Federation, or a government that linked each of these different groups.

Reflect on how this idea of connecting different tribes can relate to the governing system we have in place today. (Turn and talk)

Graphic OrganizerTake out your graphic organizer so we can fill it out together.

Independent PracticeComplete the reading on the wars between the Iroquois groups and how this lead to the formation of The Great Binding Law.

1. What is the Great Binding Law?

2. How might this have influenced our government today?

Group WorkAnswer the following questions depending on which group you are in:Group One- What was the Great Peace Treaty and why did it come about?

Group Two- Who were the chiefs who helped create the Iroquois league?

Group Three- What was the Great Binding Law? What did this law lead to?

Group Four- What roles did men and woman play in the Grand Council?

ClosureHow did these Native American groups began to form governing bodies, not so different then the ones we see today in America??

Continue to take note of how the practices of the Early American People are still relevant today.

HomeworkWrite a mini reflection (one paragraph) on the importance of the creation of the Iroquois league.

Refer to all the information we review today, and explain why the Iroquois league was created, and how it is similar to the government we have today.
