Walking on WaterWalking on Water

I. Looming Storm

1. Obeying Jesus

2. Ensuing Storm

1. Obeying Jesus

22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of Him to the other

side, while He dismissed the crowd.

“Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat”

In King James Version“Constrained”

Having the meaning of Forcing and Compelling

“Immediately”

This is right after the Feeding of 5000

And the people had wanted to make Him

king (John 6:15)

The disciples were in This Boat,

Caught in This Situation

Because Jesus made them to.

They were in

This Boat

Alone

Because Jesus arranged it.

It was Jesus who Set

the Stage and Arranged

the Situation

2. Ensuing Storm

24 but the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves

because the wind was against it.

The Boat was very Far from Land, away from the Safety

of the Coast

Wind

and Waves

are the Natural Elements

of the Sea.

The Further away from the Shore,

the more Helpless against these

Forces of the Sea

II. Astounding Ask

2. Incredible Ask

1. Typical Reaction

25 During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were

terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear

Jesuscame to them.

Taking a Direct way,

He walked on water to meet them.

How did they

React to this positive

Act of Love

and Care?

2. Incredible Ask

27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I.

Don't be afraid.” 28 “Lord, if it's you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”

29 “Come,” He said.

Seeing their FearJesus

Immediately Assured them:

“It is I.”

“Lord, if it's you”

What do we

Dare to Ask if we know It is Jesus?

Do we dare to Ask?

“You do not Have because

you do not Ask.” (James 4:2)

If Jesus puts me in a storm,

do I dare to trust Him to make me

walk on water?

“Come!”

Jesus was More Ready

to Give than we are

Ready to Ask!

III. Walk on Water

1. Walk in Faith

2. Sink in Doubt

1. Walk in Faith

29 “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down

out of the boat, walked on the water

and came toward Jesus.

“Peter got down out of the boat”

There is no Walking on water if we would not get out of the Boat!

2. Sink in Doubt

30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried

out, “Lord, save me!” 31 Immediately Jesus reached

out His hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” He said,

“why did you doubt?”

“But when he saw the wind”

The Wind was there All this time, why only now

he “saw”?

“he was afraid”

He was Overwhelmed by the visible threat of

the wind and Forgot the Power of Jesus.

“why did you doubt?”

Do we really believe that Jesus Alone is

Sufficient and Capable to hold us above the water?
