Social injustices. Dying ecosystems. Changing climates. Are any of these setting off alarm bells in your head? If not, then it’s time for a wake-up call. In our school communities, the problem-rife world may seem a million miles away. But in reality, as students, these issues are our responsibility too. We’re encouraged to actively aid, but more importantly, to actively understand.
While we are keen to celebrate our many services to the world, we far too often forget our actions can, too, have negative repercus-sions. This November 14th, join us at WAB for a day devoted to rec-ognizing the critical problems we face as a society, and ways in which we can change our own behavior to rectify these global issues.
WAKE UP CALL...

This year, the logo is in the shape of an hourglass, which embodies the idea that “time is running out”. Within the hourglass, we can see a brightly colored top-section of the earth yet to fall through, but the bottom is significantly dimmer to symbolize the damage that has al-ready been done to our planet. The purpose is to give everyone a sense of urgency and motivate everyone to act now, instead of allow-ing further time and destruction to elapse.

Concept and Synopsis
The choreography of this piece was inspired by the theme of WAB’s 2017 Global Issues Conference: Wake-Up Call.
Collage implies a melding of the dissimilar. Our disconnect from one an-other, and from the natural elements in which we exist, has become more vast, leading to a chaos of the oblivion. In our successful conquest of ad-vancement, we have lost our ancient rhythms. We linger too long inside machines, tricked into a false comfort zone. All the while the Earth screams.
Our dance is a series of intertwined images that force us to confront our core in order to find it again.

About the Speaker:
Workshop: Reduce and ContributeSession 1 Time: 12:20-13:10 Venue: 5300Session 2 Time: 13:20-14:10 Venue: 7222
Becky Wang, the current co-director of Roundabout, has been committed to the organization since 2010. Roundabout is a social enterprise made up of volunteers located within Mainland China. They collect donated items and raise funds to pro-vide valuable resources to the less fortunate individuals. Although Becky now works for Roundabout, her first charity experiences date back to 2000. During 2000-2004, she has made considerable contributions to the Great Wall Education Foundation, a charity organization registered in Hong Kong that provides educational funds for a school in a remote area of Yunnan Province. With extensive experience in non-profit organizations, Becky hopes to encourage more students to become more active in the community.
As the time-old saying goes, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Today, we are overloaded with thing we no longer need, but if we work together to do-nate them, we’ll create a better environment with less waste and hassle, and more warmth and love. This workshop will focus on book and clothes donations, and explain how Roundabout, a charity NGO, works. There will also be a student activity where students will make a creative design using donated items.

Terry Townshend is a British bird conservationist living and working in Beijing. A passionate individual, Terry has spearheaded efforts to save some of China’s most endangered birds, in particular, the Jankowski’s Bunting. Terry is a member of the BirdLife International Global Advisory Group, and is a co-author on Europe’s lead-ing birding blog, Birding Frontiers. He’ll talk about designing innovative projects to involve ordinary people in scientific discovery to make a difference, and focusing on two specific projects in Beijing relating to the Beijing Swift and the Beijing Cuckoo and how the projects to discover their previously unknown wintering grounds and migratory routes has inspired millions of people. Terry will then ask the students to come up with ideas of their own for projects to engage their classmates and families.

GUEST speakerMary Peng
About the Speaker:
Workshop: Why Are There So Many Stray/Abandoned Animals and How Can We Help Resolve This Situation?Time: 11:10-12:00 Venue: 7222
Mary Peng is the Chief Executive Officer and Founder of the International Center for Veterinary Services (ICVS), the first full service international standard animal hospital and pet care facility in China. ICVS provides medical consultations and treatments, diagnostic laboratory testing, radiology and ultrasonography, vaccinations, etc. Mary created the Veterinary Learning Exchange Program in China at ICVS, bringing together veterinarians from China and from across the world to exchange medi-cal knowledge. Mary works with international schools and universities in China, the United States and in more than 20-countries to effect positive change for individu-als, institutions and the greater community. Originally from New York, she has been based in China since 1991.
Although the Chinese economy has significantly advanced in the last decade, the animal welfare industry is still in its infancy. Pet ownership and care is new in China with less than 5% in major cities and effectively zero in rural regions. The result is pet overpopulation and great need for improved pet welfare and humane popula-tion control. The ICVS Humane Animal Welfare Workshop helps to provide advice and considerations for rescuers, address the root sources of abandoned animals is-sues, and how to help raise awareness to members of our community. We will pro-vide education about responsible pet ownership, adoption over purchase, spaying/neutering, rabies vaccinations, and basic pet commitments.
