Overview of VUB

• One of 8 federally-funded TRiO Programs through U.S. Department of Education

• Began in 1972• 51 VUB Programs nation-wide• CCCC’s VUB Program, funded in 2012, is the only one in NC• Serves 125 Veterans in 5 Counties (Chatham, Harnett,

Johnston, Lee, and Wake)• Designed to motivate and assist veterans in the

development of academic and other requisite skills necessary for acceptance and success in a program of postsecondary education

Program Services• Instruction in Mathematics, Science, Foreign language, Composition and Literature • Tutoring • Career Counseling • Study Skills, Time Management, and Financial Literacy Workshops • Assistance in securing support services from other locally available resources such as

the Veterans Administration, State veterans agencies, veterans associations, and other State and local agencies that serve veterans

• Assistance in preparing for college entrance examinations and completing college admission applications

• Information on the full range of Federal student financial aid programs and benefits (including Federal Pell Grant awards and loan forgiveness) and resources for locating public and private scholarships

• Assistance in completing financial aid applications, including the Free Application for Federal Student Aid

• Education or counseling services designed to improve financial and economic literacy, including financial planning for postsecondary education

• Guidance on and assistance in entry into postsecondary education • Advice and assistance in secondary and postsecondary course selection • Special services to enable veterans to make the transition to postsecondary education
